The release is timed with the 30th anniversary of the original “Dark Knight Returns,” which is considered a seminal work in comic book history, and served as the inspiration for much of Christopher Nolan‘s own Batman cinematic trilogy, as well as Zack Snyder‘s forthcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The series’ four books, in which a Batman of advancing age returns from retirement, are credited with being among the first to depict the dark complexity of spandex-clad heroes.

The second chapter in the trilogy, “Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again,” was released in 2001 over three issues, and depicts a Bruce Wayne forced underground in a society under the rule of Lex Luthor.

As for the latest installment, Azzarello said, “It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”
