French FM: No UN resolution on Syria a 'scandal'

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe on Sunday increased pressure on Russia to support a U.N. Security Council resolution against the Syrian regime, describing the lack of such a clear statement of condemnation as a "scandal."

Juppe said during a visit to the Australian capital Canberra that Russia and France remained divided over Syria following talks between French and Russian foreign and defense ministers in Moscow last week.

Veto-wielding Russia wants Syrian President Bashar Assad's government to halt its violence against protesters and to expedite reforms.

"We think the regime has lost its legitimacy, that it's too late to implement a program of reform," Juppe told reporters between meetings with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd.

"Now we should adopt in New York the resolution condemning the violence and supporting the dialogue with the opposition," he said.

"It's a scandal not to have a clearer position of the U.N. on such a terrible crisis," he added.

The United Nations estimates that 2,200 people have been killed in Syria's ongoing crackdown on anti-government protests that erupted in mid-March.

Juppe said while Russia still proposed using its veto in the U.N. Security Council to stop a resolution of condemnation, France would continue pursuing it with Britain and other countries.

European nations and the U.S. circulated a draft U.N. Security Council resolution on Aug. 24 seeking an arms embargo and other sanctions aimed at stopping the Syrian government's crackdown on opposition protesters.

France, Britain, the United States, Germany and Portugal .

I am surprised that Spain was not included in the above list . The countries

mentioned above are former or current colonialists and war monger states .

So what do you expect from them ? Imperialist no good regimes that will

change when the third world country residents take them over without firing a shot .

What goes around comes around to get you ... is a great Motto

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe should know better. The UN is controlled by the Arab league / OPEC. No resolutions condemning Arab main states allowed. Only condemning Israel. The French have always voted as they Arabs wanted them to vote. So too many Euro states. Now, Juppe, the Lefty, wants a resolution against Syria when the Arab League just got through saying "No foreign interference on Syria". Wasn't Juppe listening?

Eject all Arab countries, Russia and China from the UN... or, better, dissolve it altogether.

I wonder when Russia is going to grow up a little. Putin is a throwback to Stalin and the Tsars. How does he justify being what he is? Serious denial plus major ignorance? Hard to believe he can pull it off, but Assad sets him a major example of deep insanity.

No UN resolution on Syria a 'scandal - translation: We western bastards now want control of Syria's oil now ...
      • JamesL 8 mths ago
Biryani, you are a subhuman scumball. 2,200 people killed and you think it is about oil? Assad is just a normal leader in your book? If you could, you would cheerfully buy oil from him? You have your head wedged where the sun don't shine.

Syria has no oil to speak of. Iran has been supplying Syria with Oil even since Syria supported Iran in the 8 year Iran Iraq war. The talk of putting restraints on Syria oil is just Obama trying to make people believe he is embargoing Syrai in a serious way. Up until two weeks ago, Obama was in love with Assad.

I am sick and tired of reading/hearing about Lybia and Syria the imperialist western powers need to stay out of this and let the Syrians and Lybians handle it. We are trying again to play the imperialist role in deciding on how the people of each country should run it.

If you leave Arabs alone in their fight with anyone, they will commit genocide as easily as you drink coffee in the morning.

The USA and the UK vetoed 4 Russian resolutions calling for cease-fire on all sides before Russia launched the counter-offensive in Georgia, a fact entirely suppressed by the US media. Enjoy freedom of press, Western style.

Is the oil in Syria not enough for a NATO invasion?
    • BUBBA  •  8 mths ago
NATO has already been discredited in Libya, but the HYPOCRITES who call themselves "world leaders" Obama, Cameron and the French Miget are too cowardly to make any move against Assad and Syria.

Gaddafi was charged with crimes against humanity one week after the uprising began. Assad can't be charged with crimes against humanity because his savage regime is friendly to the mighty Jews.

Kids, if you want to be good criminals befriend the Jews. Nobody can say or do anything to you. The chosen ones rule the earth.

what are these idiots whining about nato involvement in libya ? would they rather gaddafi slaughters his citizens with impunity ?

it funny to remember back to just a few months ago , when the obama lackies went running to all the weekend news shows to declare that under no circumstances would the US act militarily against syria .

now the reason wasnt because it was the wrong thing to do , like obama went ahaead and did in Libya , but rather because obama lackies said they see assad as a "reformer" . oddly , now the obama regime stays pretty silent .

i bet obama was running around all giddy this whole last couple weeks . with the earth quake , the hurricane , the aniversary of 9/11 , and the presidential debates going on , there has been so much to fill the news with , that noone is reporting on the mess that he has made of the "arab spring" , and how bad things have become for the newly liberated people .

noone will ask "who will protect the libyan civilians from the rebels you helped arm to facilitate a civil war ?"

noone willl ask "what r u going to do to ease tensions between egypt and israel , since you pressured mubarak out , and he was the main driving force behind the treaty that held the fragile peace together ?"

noone is going to ask " what do you have to say about the reports of attrocities commited by the libyan rebels you supported in their rise to power ?"
