    French navy helped attacked ship off Nigeria

    LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — An anti-piracy watchdog says the French navy, rather than Nigerian authorities, had to help a cargo ship attacked by pirates that saw two crew members killed.

    The International Maritime Bureau said on their website Thursday that the French aided the cargo ship after the attack early Monday. The bureau said eight pirates took a cook hostage and forced him to the captain's room, where they shot and killed him while stealing a safe.

    The bureau said the chief engineer died from injuries he suffered when falling down a makeshift rope of bed sheets to escape.

    The attacks are just the latest to target West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, where piracy has escalated from low-level armed robberies to hijackings and cargo thefts.

        Humanity will never learn.
        An eye for an eye leaves the world blind.
        Perhaps there may be a better solution, such as unleashing manufacturing and education and what not on the area. A recreation of civilization there. Teach wisdom and philosophy.
        But killing them will not stop them, for we never learn.

      Lock and Load folk's! Why would Seaman go work on a vessel that does not protect them? Arm the crew with rifles...lets call it extracurricular activity, you know, like skeet shooting on tourist ships. Fire off about 500 rounds at a rinky tink Pirate boat and watch how quick it bugs out!

        We seem to forget that the vindictiveness of the French resulted in the punishing terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which gave one Adolph Hitler a very receptive audience in Germany. We seem to forget that it was the French after WWII who decided to "re-colonise" Vietnam, which had fought as a valiant ally against the Japanse, and declared independence. That stunt resulted in the Vietnam War, which the French skulked away from after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu. The U.S., having shortsightedly sided with France, was stuck in Vietnam for decades. France was like a lady of the night when the Germans occupied Paris, then were the same way when the Americans liberated Paris.

      why are there no private mercenaries taking offers to protect boats... a couple of RPGs should work well. If RPGs can bust tanks, they should cope well with pirate boats

      It's high time the penalty for criminal offences is reviewed. Instead of tempering justice with mercy for these criminals, let them be hanged to death and broadcast on the internet and television. With that, crimes will be brought to minimal level.
