Frozen Director Explains How Elsa Will Be Different In Sequel

‘Frozen’ was kind of a big deal. Not only is it the highest grossing animated film of all time thanks to its eye-watering haul of $1.2 billion, but it also became a pop culture phenomenon thanks to its soundtrack.

Because of its monumental success a ‘Frozen’ sequel was always going to happen. In fact, co-director Chris Buck is currently working on the script for the follow-up with his fellow ‘Frozen’ filmmaker Jennifer Lee.

And during a quick break from their scribing to promote the short film ‘Frozen Fever’ Buck provided an update on their work, while explaining how the character of Elsa will be different to the original.

“[In ‘Frozen’] she had such a dramatic journey, and at the end she’s just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again,” Buck explained to Fandango. “That’s what was really good about the short – we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality … you will see in the next one.”

And it’s hardly surprising that we’ll see a livelier version of Elsa in ‘Frozen 2’, because she couldn’t get much darker than her antics in the original - what with covering her kingdom in an eternal winter, building an ice castle, and unleashing a terrifying giant snow creature on her sister.

Eventually, Elsa learns how to deal with her icy powers, and the film ends happily ever after. So will the sequel see Elsa on her own hunt for love?

At the moment – who knows? Because Buck refused to reveal any further insight into ‘Frozen 2’, except to say that they are “working on the sequel right now” and that they have some “cool ideas.”

All that Buck would admit is that they’ve enjoyed being reunited with Anna, Kristoff, Elsa, and Olaf, and because they’re parts of their personality and they love them so much they’re excited “to see them grow and to see what happens next.”

We might be waiting a long time to see where the ‘Frozen’ posse end up though, because there’s no concrete release date for the sequel. Those of you who are mad about that will just need to Let It Go. Sorry.
