Game of Thrones Casts New Red Priestess, But What Does It Mean?

Has Game of Thrones conjured another Melisandre from the flames?

In advance of the new season, the answer may be even harder to pin down than a shadowy assassin birthed in a cave.

Here’s what we know, per our sister site Deadline: The HBO drama has cast British actress Melanie Liburd (The Grinder) as a Red Priestess in Season 6.

This likely means that Liburd merely will play another female clergy member in the faith of R’llor — much like the woman that Tyrion mocked (and then was visually skewered by) in Volantis in Season 5’s “High Sparrow” episode.

But the night is dark and full of terrors… and hiatus is even murkier and therefore full of fun chances to speculate.

Given that one popular Season 6 fan theory involves Jon Snow’s reanimation by Carice van Houton’s Melisandre — who, as a Red Priestess herself, possesses such powers — perhaps Liburd’s character is somehow involved, making her yet another signpost on the path to a Kit Harington-filled sixth season?
