Gay, Lesbian Older Adults Face Adversity, Depression

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) baby boomers face higher rates of physical disabilities, depression and loneliness than their heterosexual counterparts, according to a new study.

LGBT adults were also more likely to binge-drink and smoke than heterosexuals of similar ages.

"The higher rates of aging and health disparities among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults is a major concern for public health," study researcher Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen, director of the University of Washington's Institute for Multigenerational Health, said in a statement. "The health disparities reflect the historical and social context of their lives, and the serious adversity they have encountered can jeopardize their health and willingness to seek services in old age."

The team surveyed 2,560 LGBT adults ages 50 to 95 from across the U.S. and found that many of the subjects' unique circumstances lead to physical and mental distress, with nearly four out of 10 participants asserting that they had considered suicide at some point. In addition, 47 percent of respondents reported a disability, 31 percent reported depression and 53 percent reported loneliness.

The participants were less likely to be married or partnered than heterosexuals, which may result in less social support and financial security as they age, according to the researchers. The study authors note that LGBT adults were more likely to live alone, and because they may not have children to help them, and are at a greater risk for social isolation, which is "linked to poor mental and physical health, cognitive impairment, chronic illness and premature death," Fredriksen-Goldsen said.

The study also revealed that 80 percent of the participants had been victimized and discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or gender identity — incidents that may contribute to their poor health, according to the researchers. For example, 21 percent of respondents said they were fired from a job because of their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

Another 21 percent did not tell their doctors about their sexual orientation or gender identity, because they feared that they would be refused services or receive inferior health care, experiences that 13 percent of the respondents had actually endured. In a medical setting, a lack of openness about sexuality "prevents discussions about sexual health, risk of breast or prostate cancer, hepatitis, HIV risk, hormone therapy or other risk factors," Fredriksen-Goldsen said.

The study participants also cited senior housing, transportation, legal services, support groups and social events as services needed in the LGBT community. The researchers note that despite the reported lack of services, 90 percent of the subjects said they felt good about belonging to their communities.

Fredriksen-Goldsen presented some of the study's key findings last week during a congressional briefing.

When do we understand who we are? We are the worst living creatures that live and creep in this planet! If animals could talk, they would be the ones giving us warnings!

Our Constitution, and over 200 years of judicial interpretation, have consistently said that the government cannot infringe on any individual's right to believe what they want. But on the other hand, people are not permitted to use their personal beliefs as a justification for withholding civil rights from someone else.

Murder is not illegal in the U.S. because it violates a Biblical commandment; it's illegal because it denies the victim of his or her rights. Same thing with assault, robbery, pedophilia, etc. - they are crimes because they harm and deny someone their rights.

By the same token, pornography - while it offends many people's morals and religious beliefs - is NOT illegal, because moral disapproval is not sufficient reason to take away anyone's First Amendment free speech rights. See People v. Larry Flynt. Also, see Loving v. Virginia, Roe v. Wade, and Lawrence v. Texas. The Supreme Court has held on numerous occasions that religious disapproval by itself is not an acceptable reason to deny someone else's civil rights. And in Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision held that the right to marry the partner of your choice is a fundamental civil right.

The "violation of rights" clause is invoked for incest and polygamy. Children born of incestuous relationships have a much greater statistical chance of birth defects. This creates a hardship for the child, for the parents, and leads to higher medical costs - which are borne by all taxpayers. This is why incest is illegal.

Polygamy is illegal because it creates a family situation where multiple spouses have unequal legal rights. Also many junior spouses in polygamous relationships are underage or nearly so. And it has been demonstrated by multiple studies that children in polygamous households are much more likely to suffer from insufficient financial support and lack of adequate parenting, because family resources are spread more thinly. So the state has a vested interest in protecting the civil rights of underage spouses and children who are likely to be disadvantaged.

If you can show any way in which allowing gay people to marry each other will violate anyone else's rights/civil rights, then you can justify prohibiting the right of gays to marry each other. Keep in mind that your own personal distaste or disapproval of gay marriage isn't enough.

In states and in other countries where gay marriage is legal, the divorce rate among same-sex couples is generally lower than that of opposite-sex couples. Also, multiple studies have shown that children raised in same-sex parent households are statistically likely to be as well-adjusted or MORE well-adjusted, perform better in school, and benefit from a higher average family income.

Kim Kardashian made several million dollars from a marriage which only lasted two and a half months, and yet people are still afraid that gays will ruin the sanctity of marriage...?!?

The issues with depression, isolation, sickness have less to do with being gay, than they have to do with getting older. Gays have a choice of having a better support group as children move away and spouses die. Gays, for the most part, do not have children with grandchildren and secure spiritual networks to continue contact and keep up to date with the world. We lost a whole generation of gays to AIDS. The mentors and the protegee relationships are no longer there. Its time to rebuild an accepting and loving future. People need to get over that we are gay and understand we have a lifetime of experience and love to return to those that will let us.

I'm 71, the happiest time of my life has been since age 58, when I came out. I'm not depressed, stressed, suicidal......have world's of genuine friends and excess of activities. I don't know depressed LGBT people........we love our life and proud of our orientation. We didn't choose it, and am grateful to God for being "Born this Way." I know a lot of 'straights' that are a mess, unhappy phony marriages, drinkers, angry at their kids. We ALL have issues.....its called "life."

the more isolated you are, the more unhappy you will be in old age...key is to make friends, stay active, regardless of your sexuality. staying healthy, keeping up your looks and socializing can go a long way to alleviating depression.

Let me be blunt. If you spouse, (god forbid) was in an accident, and had a leg cut of, taking with it their genitals, would you love them any less. Now think of the feeling you have toward them in that situation. That is called LOVE. being gay is not about what is between your legs it is what is in their hearts. It is just a different package than where you find your love. But just as real and just as deep.

JT, seriously. This article is written about depressed older people. There are dozens of gay stories to go trash. I've just passed through four or five of em. Why act all stupid in one thats going to be specifically visted by older folks? Grow up dude.

I happen to travel in several diverse circles: music, technology, art, fashion and science crowds. I love all the people I know, I really do. I'm straight, married, kids, 20 year career and all that. I just LOVE social diversity and I can honestly say for the majority of people I know, the GLBT persons do consume/use way more than straight people (my comment takes in all stat models, excluding gay/straight outliers, so relax). I think I'm very objective, I love to observe people and behavior from hand/head gestures to life choice trends among individuals/couples. Over the years of doing this I do agree (to a degree) with this article. I think societal pressure has a good deal to do with it but when it comes down to it, consequences are unstoppable, even for straight people, no one is protected.

Wow. They survey 2500 people and get all of this information? Being in my mid 50's, I have plenty of similar age gay/lesbian friends who are not depressed, suicidal, mentally ill, disabled, druggies or alcoholics, as MANY of my straight friends are. I am successful, healthy, in a stable long term relationship and take responsibility for my actions and decisions. If you're a loser, it has nothing to do with whether or not you are gay.
The ignorance and stupidity in the comments is appalling!

I don't get this at all because loneliness entertain all genders? But one way to combat it is to get out and be among people gay or straight! Help someone if you can, enjoy a meal, game or just good ole fashion friendship. Love always starts with one hello

That probably describes pretty much old people in general. Old, tired, full of pains and problems, and depressed about not being able to live like they did when they were young.
