Gay Marriage Decision Praised by Psychological Group

The American Psychological Association praised a newly released court decision from California today (Feb. 7) that declared the state's same-sex ban unconstitutional.

The ban, known as Proposition 8, is a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage in California that passed by 52 percent in 2008. The measure came after the California Supreme Court struck down two anti-gay marriage laws five months earlier, effectively legalizing same-sex marriage in the state.

The APA, the largest professional organization for psychologists, has long supported same-sex marriage. Today, the organization put out a statement cheering the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upholding a U.S. District Court's 2010 decision to overturn Proposition 8. (Same-sex marriages have been on hold in California as the legal challenges work their way through the system.)

"Research shows that marriage provides important health and wellness benefits and that same-sex couples are similar to heterosexual couples in essential ways, including the fact that they are just as likely as opposite-sex couples to raise mentally healthy, well-adjusted children," APA President Suzanne Bennett Johnson said in a statement. "There is no scientific basis for denying marriage equality to same-sex couples."

Research has shown that children of gay parents turn out just as well as children of straight parents. Kids with two lesbian mothers, for example, have similar levels of academic achievement and well-being as well as similar numbers of friends as kids with two heterosexual parents, according to a 2010 review of research.

Public opinion may be echoing scientific opinion. In May 2011, the Gallup polling agency reported for the first time that more than half of Americans support same-sex marriage. Surveys revealed that 53 percent of Americans were in favor of marriage rights for gay couples, a 9-point increase over the previous year.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court decision announced today could be appealed, either to a larger judicial panel on the Ninth Circuit or directly to the U.S. Supreme Court. Same-sex marriages will not resume in California until after the deadline for appeal passes; if an appeal is filed, such marriages will remain on hold until a higher court makes its decision.

@StayAwake: You said “What about the scientific basis that it takes a man and a women to procreate and What about life threatening ILLNESSES.” . . . . Two Points. 1. You have FAILED with your comment if you are trying to say or imply that Gays cannot procreate (or reproduce) or sustain the human race, and here‘s why: ALL people, straight, gay, male, female must look for the opposite sex if they want to reproduce, however, they do NOT have to rely on heterosexuals to reproduce offspring (procreate) and here‘s why: The DEFINITION of Procreation is to reproduce offspring, and there is NOTHIING in the definition that says procreation must be naturally. And just so that you are aware of it, male to female sex, artificial insemination, sperm and egg donation, IVF treatments, etc. are forms of PROCREATION; therefore, Heterosexuals AND Homosexuals can reproduce offspring (or procreate).

I know, you may not like it, you may not want to believe it, and it destroys the FALSE importance that you may have placed on heterosexuality, but it is a FACT: Heterosexuals are not needed for reproduction of offspring. Children can be born from the egg of a lesbian and sperm of a gay male. They can do it NATURALLY or with a third party (as heterosexuals OFTEN do) and either way, it does not automatically change their sexual orientation. Again, male sperm and a female egg are the requirements for procreation and reproduction, NOT a person’s sexual orientation (straight or gay. Also, procreation is not a requirement for Straight or Gay marriage.

      2. Life threatening illnesses can occur in Straight or Gay marriages, so whatever you say about illnesses can be applied to Straight and Gay people.

@Jr - FINALLY a comment that makes some sense. Thanks for giving me hope as I read comment after comment of hate-filled babble. If these people are all about "God" then why are they so afraid? Let God judge and my guess is that since we are all supposedly born in God's image, he'll be OK with the gay folks. Keep up the good work with your eye opening comments.

Actually, I think it's pretty simple:
      1) If you're a Christian, surely you understand that God created us ALL in His image. If you believe He is the Creator, He created homosexuality in ALL species of animals. Unfortunately, this issue is being decided in the courts because of the fear and ignorance of the facts regarding homosexuality by "Christians" who have decided that they can judge others - not a very Christian attribute.
      2) If you're not a Christian what is the problem? Loving gay couples pose no threat to your marriage, your sexuality, your way of life. Personally, I would rather see a loving gay couple than a miserable hetero couple. Gay couples have had to overcome so many more obstacles than straight couples - they tend to cherish what few rights they've been awarded.
Live and let live. If you're a Christian, let God be our judge. If you're not a Christian, live by the Golden Rule. See - it's actually pretty simple.

So when is homophobia going to be classified as a mental disorder? Irrational fear, paranoia, superiority complex... Just a few of the symptoms.
      • Bill of Rights 3 mths ago
Bill, it is actually a mental disorder for gay people to think the way they think. It is not okay for two males to make out. It is an abomination to God and humanity, PERIOD. end of story.

        Isn't homophobia already classified????? =D

People in this country are stupid. REALLY stupid. I'm not gay. Don't want to be gay. Don't have any gay freinds (that I know of). BUT, you can't legislate morality. GOP, dumber by the day.
      • MNBruce 3 mths ago
You are the dumb one! It doesn't matter. It was voted on by the MAJORITY which means tha there wasn't enough GLBT support to pass. Now, we have three libturd, probably gay and/or lesbian judges that overturn a law, voted on by the people! This isn't a GOP/DFL issus, #$%$ You should be afraid; very afraid, because the next law that Supreme Court thugs overturn may affect you.
      • yea 3 mths ago
Just shut up already! If you don't want YOUR rights taken away, don't take them away from anybody else.

If gay marriage is a sin then let them be judged by God, not man. By the way religious nuts... if it was God's will that gay marriage is a sin, then the court would have ruled in your favor, unless you want to say that the courts are more powerful then your God.
      • Bill of Rights 3 mths ago
God is all powerful, and you have no power over God, for the Devil has taken a full hold of yourself by posting such stupid comment.
      • Colo 3 mths ago
So instead of making an argument, you just say "you're stupid! My God IS powerful!"

Makes a great case for you and your god.

The Courts made the RIGHT ruling. The majority of people (or Popular Vote) did not want slavery to end, equal rights for women, interracial marriages, etc. If we made laws based only on the majority, many groups in the U.S. would not have Civil/Equal rights. When examined closely most sane people can see there are no arguments in support of withholding full civil rights and recognition of homosexual relationships that do not stem from bigotry, hatred, ignorance, and/or religion, ALL of which are NOT valid reasons to deny people Civil/Equal Rights.

The U.S. is a Democracy Republic, meaning The Majority (or Popular Vote) is Limited in a Republic under a written Constitution, safeguarding the rights of The Individual and The Minority. The Courts/Judges, etc. are often needed because, when the majority can pass laws or rules that apply, not just to themselves, but to all members of the group, judgment is required to DISTINGUISH potential laws which are reasonable and fair from those which are TYRANNICAL because they are unnecessary, unfair, and justifiably intolerable to the minority that opposed them. Formal mechanisms need to be in place, wherever feasible, to prevent tyrannical laws from being passed by those whose judgment in such matters might fail: For example, courts often step in when people try to pass laws to coddle their Bigotry, Hate, and/or Ignorance, ignoring that the laws are unfair, unnecessary, and intolerable to the minority by DENYING the minority the same rights the majority may have . . . . . This ruling sends the appropriate message to the Bigots that their bigotry will not be sanctioned in laws by the government.

It's hard to figure why these frivolous lawsuits were instigated by the closet and self-hating
gays in the first place. Why try to fool yourself? Come out in the open as proud gay men
and women. Vitriol against gay people is the first indication of self-hatred and denial on the
      parts of the perpetrators.

Stop trying to legislate love. Stay out of people's bedrooms. I'll stay out of yours and I expect folks not invited to stay out of mine.

If the largest professional organization for psychologists has long supported same-sex marriage, then why do so many people against gay marriage claim that children of gay couples turn out so screwed up? I guess the truth is kids turn out screwed up anyway, even with loving straight parents who never get divorced.

Kim Kartrashian can be married for 72 days but 2 consenting adults who have been together longer than I've been alive can't get married because it goes against the "sanctity of marriage."

2 quick questions--and there's no need to be coy about religion because we all know that God exists.
      1. Did He design us and our universe?
      2. Did He give us all the ability to choose?
