Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said Monday that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined "the future of humanity itself."

The pope made some of his strongest comments against gay marriage in a new year address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican in which he touched on some economic and social issues facing the world today.

He told diplomats from nearly 180 countries that the education of children needed proper "settings" and that "pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman."

"This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," he said.

The Vatican and Catholic officials around the world have protested against moves to legalize gay marriage in Europe and other developed parts of the world.

One leading opponent of gay marriage in the United States is New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, whom the pope will elevate to cardinal next month.

Dolan fought against gay marriage before it became legal in New York state last June, and in September he sent a letter to President Barack Obama criticizing his administration's decision not to support a federal ban on gay marriage.

In that letter Dolan, who holds the powerful post of president of the U.S. Bishops Conference, said such a policy could "precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions."

The Roman Catholic Church, which has some 1.3 billion members worldwide, teaches that while homosexual tendencies are not sinful, homosexual acts are, and that children should grow up in a traditional family with a mother and a father.

"The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue," Benedict told the diplomats.

Gay marriage is legal in a number of European countries, including Spain and the Netherlands.

Some Churches that have allowed gay marriage, women priests, gay clergy and gay bishops have been losing members to Catholicism, and the Vatican has taken steps to facilitate their conversion.

In 2009, Benedict decreed that Anglicans who leave their Church, many because they feel it has become too liberal, can find a home in Catholicism in a parallel hierarchy that allows them to keep some of their traditions.

The Vatican has since set up "ordinariates," structures similar to dioceses, in Britain and the United States to oversee ex-Anglicans who have converted and be a point of contact for those wishing to do so.

ayny, you're freakin' idiot. the Pope knows that gay marriage is wrong just as much as you know that marriage between an animal and a human is wrong. Jesus doesn't have to tell you that, idiot!

No mention of divorce being a major problem?

Molesting isn't straight or gay---it is perversion.

We need to get the divorce rate down to help children.

A theory on the molesting that goes on in the Catholic: Catholic men grow up being told that there is no greater sin than being gay. They escape their homosexual feelings by serving the church where they can be celebate and not be questioned by their peers as to why they aren't out chasing women like the rest of them. Homosexuality does not go away just because one chooses to be celebate so instead of their attraction for the same sex maturing in age as they do, they continue to be attracted to the same age that they initially were when they started realizing that they were gay to begin with. Eventually the natural thing for any animal in existence is to have some sexual release so they act on their urges to have sex with boys since they are at the smae sexual maturity as boys. The catholic church has created these monsters by supressing them instead of accepting people for what they are and allowing them to develop naturally. Its sick but you can blame the church.

If gays cant get married then straights should not be able to get divorced.

I can think of at least a thousand other issues that will bring about the end of humanity rather than gays. How about Nuclear War or all of the polutants we pour into the earth? The Pope's prioritity list really seems screwed up here.

If two people want to be involved in an institution with a 50% failure rate I say go ahead!

I disagree. I think the Kardasians are the greatest threat.

Ignorance, greed and violence threaten the future of humanity.

I may not be gay but I do have a problem taking family advice from an organization that is responsible for hundreds of years of family busting in the form of converting 'heathens' all across the American continents; persecuting non-catholic members of the Christian faith; backing the Nazis during world war 2 and moving around child molesters from parish to parish to avoid prosecution.

It's time to allow a catholic priest to marry as in other religions. I think they would get more men to serve and less problems in the long run. If they want to project a family unit, then lead by example.

When the US becomes a theocracy like many in the GOP (Santorum) are pushing for then it'll matter what the Pope thinks about gay marriage. Until that time marriage is regulated by our government which is secular and religion has no say.

Sherlock, Reaper and some others are sockpuppet fake ID's of a ignorant troll who normally goes onto science threads with the stated goal of shutting them down. He/she has about a dozen or so fake ID's. He'll show up on a board and post inane drivel, post after post. He'll go back and delete his own posts so he can claim persecution. He and his ignorant fake ID's will hit the report abuse tab in order make posts disappear. What's really fun is when he/she starts talking to it's self. This fundiot #$%$ is about as far from an actual Christian as you can get.

He also says that you will go to "hell" for using any kind of birth control besides the "rhythm method" & divorce. How bout a hamburger on Friday? They changed that silly "rule" but 50 years ago you were going to hell for it. For christ's sake, this guy believes that if an infant dies before baptism, that child will also GO TO HELL, original sin. QUESTION EVERYTHING! Quit being a mindless follower. The Pope is just a man, not a super hero. This man has zero credibility until they start prosecuting the child molesting priests instead of hiding them from parish to parish.

Notice they never define EXACTLY what the "threat" is? That is how the anti-gay marriage forces lost in MA. They could never explain that coherently. As a straight father and grandfather, I don't feel the least bit threatened.

Gay folks are not a threat to traditional marriage, divorce is. As far as the Pope goes, he should fix his own back yard before casting attacks on others. Besides, Ratizberger covered up the rape of blind children while he was Bishop

Muslims don't recognize Jews as God's chosen people. Jews don't recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Protestants don't recognize the Pope as the leader of Christianity, and Baptists don't recognize each other at the liquor store.

I'm not anti-gay or Catholic, but anyone ever get the feeling that most news articles have been aiming to pick at only the worst aspects of politicians, religions, organizations, ect? It's like someone's continuously throwing fuel on the fire..... and we're all burning up.
    • Beth  •  1 mth 14 days ago
Sorry, but the straight folks have done a fine job of screwing up humanity all by themselves. Divorce, out of wedlock kids by five different men, celebrities married for less than a month, remarriage three, four, five times, etc......
