Gay Teen Filmmaker Eric James Borges Commits Suicide

A gay California teenager who made an anti-suicide video last month urging other gay kids to "never give up" has killed himself.

The death on Wednesday of young filmmaker EricJames Borges, 19, has shocked his friends.

"He advocated pro-life for gays. He wouldn't want anyone to [commit suicide]," said close friend James Criss. "It's so shocking to see that he did it himself."

Borges made a video just last month for the "It Gets Better" project, a campaign that features personal hope-filled videos to LGBT teens to get them through difficult times.

"I know it is hard and I know what it feels like to be rejected and abused for your biological sexual orientation," Borges said in the video.

Borges talks about being bullied from kindergarten through high school.

"I was physically, mentally, emotionally and verbally assaulted on a day-to-day basis for my perceived sexual orientation," Borges said. "I was stalked, spit on, ostracized and physically assaulted."

In high school, he said he reached his breaking point when he said he was assaulted in a full classroom with a teacher present. He dropped out, graduated through independent studies and went to college.

He also described a traumatic coming out experience in an "extremist Christian household." His parents did not accept his sexuality and he said he was kicked out of his home around the end of September.

"My mother knew I was gay and performed an exorcism on me in an attempt to cure me," Borges said. "My anxiety, depression, self-loathing and suicidal thoughts spiked. I had nowhere safe to go, either at home or school."

Criss, 19, said that Borges struggled for a few weeks as he bounced around the homes of different friends, but was eventually happy and settled with a new roommate.

Borges said in the video that he came out in an attempt to educate others about the consequences of homophobia.

"I'm giving you this condensed history of my background to tell you this: it gets better," Borges said. "Now, I am a supplemental instructor of sexuality, a freelance guest speaker, a published writer and I work for the Trevor Project, the world's largest organization focused on suicide and crisis prevention among LGBTQ youth. I have met and befriended the most incredible and authentic people since I've come out."

A confident Borges reassured viewers that once they got through the difficult time, they would find love and happiness.

"You will love and be loved and I love you. You have an entire life, fit to burst with opportunities ahead of you. Don't ever give up and don't ever for one second think that you're not a valuable and beautiful contribution to this world. It gets better."

In the days before his suicide, Criss saw nothing to warn of the coming suicide.

"He seemed like the normal old Eric the last time I saw him. He was fine. I couldn't tell anything was wrong with him," Criss said.

In November, the young filmmaker made a video titled, "Invisible Creatures: A Short Film by EricJames Borges." The video features couples of different ages, some heterosexual and some homosexual, lovingly hugging, kissing, walking and talking in a field.

    Anti-Suicide Activist Kills Himself

"Eric was a very driven and passionate individual," Criss said. "As long as I've known him, he was always seeking to do good for others. He wanted to make the world a better place, especially for the gay community."

Criss said Borges had intended to use the video for applications to film school, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

"He had so much talent in him," Criss said. "He was a visionary."

Criss said Borges was a big fan of Lady Gaga and that his favorite song off of her new album was the inspiring "Edge of Glory."

"He loved her so much. That was probably his role model," Criss said. "He often quoted her. He was very passionate about her."

His sexual preference aside, this young man will leave behind many who loved him. My condolences to his family and friends.

Really, his family do not deserve any condolences. They should be ashamed of themselves.

My statement wasn't directed at his immediate family, but I am sure he had extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins....maybe even a neice or nephew) that did love him. Even his parents, who threw him out due to their own ignorance, I'm sure have some type of love for their child. They did not kill him, even though their actions didn't make him feel any more loved...But thank you for taking the time to reply...Have a blessed week!

Homosexuals are three times more likely to consider suicide.
      • Tony 4 mths ago
They're probably 10 x more likely to be bullied too, so I'm not surprised their suicide rate is higher.

Sadly, many people who claim to hate the sin and love the sinner just won't quit persecuting the sinner. Makes me wonder if they actually listen to themselves.

On what do you base your not-so-carefully-thought-out observation?
      • Karen 4 mths ago
Yes, hate the sinner is still hate. I think they stopped listening to themselves long ago, when they started listening and adopting ignorant and bigoted beliefs of others in authority.

I could make a bunch of jokes now but under these circumstances they would nott be funny. That is a waste. Nobody should suffer emotional or physical abuse, especially when it leads to this. Maybe ribbing among friends and family in the propper setting (I have a gay family member and we love him) I hope we learn sexual orientation is a small part of ones character and we need to look at the person as a whole. Dahmer was gay but would you have wanted him on the street if he wasn't? Of course not his entire being was garbage. This young man was prolly gentle and society killed him after breaking him with abuse. Teach your kids NO BULLYING IS OK. Gay or not. Don't only teach them not to do it but teach them to step in and stop it themselves or tell an adult. I have no respect for bullies. Why don't I get bullied at 6'2 250? Cause bullies are really wimps inside compensating for insecurities.

        Bullying is not O.K.
But open, blatant, and flagrant homosexuality certainly isn't!
And most especially where there's a organized destructive movement to upset and uproot a society for their own personal perversed lifestyle!

It's better to teach your kids HOMOSEXUALITY AND COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET... IS NOT O.K.

Being a Blackmale...you should certainly see this: because the 'Gay Blade' has piggy backed on the Civil Rights Movement at the expense of Black America.
They used it...as they used Jesse Jackson and President Obama: as using the natural occurance of the color of one's skin as platform for their unnatural lifestyle choice, saying "I was born this way."

And their character ain't all that neither.
Many don't believe, or just plain reject The Lord.
One of them on here endorsed killing Rabbis and Ministers.. blaming them for the attitudes against homosexual behavior.
If you have no reference to God, you have refernce to nothing.
There's no right, nor wrong...so 'anything' is possible...anything goes!

I don't know if Homosexual is biological or not, they say it is, and it's not a choice. I am not them, so who am I to tell them how they should feel.

I'm not a Liberal or Atheist, but it's hard to hear that his own parents disowned him...about a year and a half ago, my Daughter told me she was Lesbian, I didn't become angry, or distance myself, I told her "There's nothing wrong with that"...I don't want her to think I don't love her, even though I still don't quite understand the LGBT lifestyle.

This kid was only 19. Politics is too much for someone of that age to have to deal with, let alone all of the other stuff they have to try and deal with. Look young people. Suicide is not the answer to your problems when things are overwhelming, especially the gay community. The answer to your problems is to just tell people it´s not their business, and you will deal with whatever you wish to deal with when your ready to deal with it, and not before. Gay people need to stop rolling over and playing diplomat. Just tell people your not the boss of what goes on in my life and in my bedroom. Get a life and get out of mine. Trust me, you will feel so much better about yourself if you just stand up for yourself. In no way are you obligated to justify who you are. Remember this. You did not make the choice to be gay. You made the choice to be YOURSELF, and there is nothing wrong with choosing to be who you really are.

Yes..some Gays are born this way( it is in their genes). Sometimes Babies are born with two sex organs (Male and Female) when they get older some go both ways, Next you have a group of kids who were repeatedly raped by Older Men or Women this can change their mental behavior. I wish bullies would leave them alone...Remember God love them too!

I hate to say it, but I worked in the gay community here in NYC for years and there is such a streak of self loathing in many. Often from the abuse that started their orientation, resulting in a very unhealthy lifestyle desperate to appear positive and fun when it was really just burdening them more with additional shame and self hatred. There really needs to be some honesty in the community, not just image-gathering, so people can get the psychiatric help they need to avoid this, the drugs and random sex. Sorry, but that's the real deal.

Candid Lies says that homosexuality is learned. I am waiting for him to explain how a young man LEARNS to have an erection when he sees a naked man. The attraction is in the mind at a rather basic level. The usual thing for the bigots will say after that is to bring up illegal desires. That is irrelevant. Homosexuality is perfectly legal.

I grew up in the 1940-1960 period when nobody talked about homosexuality and homosexual acts. Where was the teaching that Candid Lies rants about? I was the one that sought out other gays, not the reverse that Candid Lies claims. Other homosexuals of my age group had to do the same thing. Hiding it does not prevent homosexuality, it is just dishonest.

The basic thing is that homosexuals are a protected class, like religion, regardless of whether it is a choice or not.
