Gaza militants fire rockets after Israeli threat

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Palestinian rocket exploded near a kindergarten in southern Israel on Tuesday, police said, just hours after Israel's military chief warned the army would have to carry out a broad offensive in Gaza to stop the rocket salvos.

The kindergarten was empty at the time of the rocket strike, which destroyed a storage shed next to the building. A second rocket landed in an open area nearby, police said.

Earlier Tuesday, Israel's military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, told a parliamentary committee that the current situation, in which Israel carries out limited reprisals in response to rocket fire, cannot be sustained.

"Eventually we will have to go toward a broader offensive action in Gaza to stop the rockets. We cannot keep on going round after round of violence in Gaza," he was quoted as saying.

Gantz's remarks were relayed by a meeting participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

The latest flare-up in fighting took place several weeks ago, when Gaza militants fired volleys of rockets that killed one Israeli civilian and wounded several others. Israeli airstrikes targeting the rocket squads killed 10 Palestinian militants.

Over 1 million Israelis live within range of the Gaza rocket fire. The attacks have severely disrupted life in southern Israel.

A senior military official told The Associated Press this week that Hamas, along with smaller militant groups, now possess sophisticated anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons. He said they also have rockets capable of reaching Tel Aviv, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Gaza, meaning that Israel's main population center would be in range.

The official said many arms have flooded into Gaza in the wake of the Libyan revolution, with looted weapons making their way through Egypt's Sinai peninsula and into Gaza through smuggling tunnels under the border. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

He said many of these arms have reached Islamic Jihad, responsible for much of the recent rocket fire.

Gantz told the committee Tuesday that the Islamic Jihad is stockpiling weapons and in Gaza, and even Hamas is worried about the buildup.

Hamas has largely avoided the fighting, but Israel holds the group responsible for all attacks from Gaza because it rules Gaza.

Earlier this month the Israeli government authorized its military to take all necessary steps to stop rocket fire from Gaza, including a ground operation. The decision authorized the military to act in accordance with the severity of Palestinian attacks.

Israel launched a three week military campaign in the winter of 2008 aimed at stopping years of rocket fire from Gaza Strip. Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed, including hundreds of civilians. Thirteen Israelis were killed.

Israel came under harsh criticism for the civilian casualties. Israel blamed Hamas, saying the militant group staged attacks from heavily populated residential areas, as well as mosques and schools.

      ratio is?

they really are looking for war, blaming the religion afterwards.
LOL your god is looking for war?

I have to wonder how many of those SA7's missing from Libya (over 19,000) are floating around in Gaza? It seems these rockets attacks are taunting Israel into finding out.

This one of the major hold backs in the two state solution. If the Palestinians get their own state, then there is no limit to how much arms they would be able to import. The killing would only end when there was no one left to fire the last bullet.

Islam is NOT compatible with democratic principles. The religion itself is against democracy.

A democracy is a system in which all people are judged as equals before the law, regardless of race, religion or gender. The vote of every individual counts as much as the vote of any other. The collective will of the people then determines the rules of society.

Under Islamic law, only Muslim males are entitled to full rights. The standing of a woman is often half that of a man's - sometimes even less. Non-Muslims have no standing with a Muslim. In fact, a Muslim can never be put to death for killing an unbeliever.

The Islamic state is guided by Islamic law, derived from the Quran and Sunnah. A body of clerics interprets the law and applies it to all circumstances social, cultural and political. The people are never to be placed above the Quran and Sunnah any more than man should be above Allah.

It is somewhat debatable as to whether there are any states in the Muslim world that qualify as actual democracies. There is no denying, however, that the tiny handful that are often held up as democratic nations are ones in which deep tension exists between the government and religious leaders, as the latter often complain that democracy is an idolatrous system imposed on them.

      Islam does not facilitate democracy.

Palestinian nationalism has always been a crock, a transparently phony justification for terrorism that has always come before nationalism. Palestine was never a country or a state. It was the name given by the Roman occupation forces to a region they were administering, a region far larger than modern day Israel. There was never an Arab Palestinian king or ruler until Arafat. There was never a separate country called Palestine.

LIAR, fool, scammer and sham. You post fantasy that you make up in your basement, get a job, get a brain, get a life. For once, learn to tell the truth.
      • FredJ 6 mths ago
No Bill, read your history. It was the Roman empire that called them Palestine. That was Isrealies and Arab's alike. Calling names only proves that you want to believe something that's just not true. And calling names it's hateful and mean.

Arabs and Muslims love their own children by hating Jews. It is a perverse kind of love, but it is love nonetheless. Lacking a meaningful identity beyond the family and the tribe, they build one of hate instead. Hate is what they pass down to their children. Hate is their prophecy for the future. It is the true face of Islam.

Dan I've really enjoyed your posts. Sounds like you really know your subject. Keep it up and God Bless

An Arabic word only has one root. The root word for Islam is “al-Silm,” which means “submission” or “surrender.” There is no disagreement about this among Islamic scholars.

In truth, the Quran not only calls Muslims to submit to Allah, it also commands them to subdue people of other religions until they are in a full state of submission to Islamic rule. This has inspired the history of terrorism by Islam and the the present war Islam has with the non-Muslim world.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad will ultimately be responsible for the "collective" punishment awaiting all citizens of Gaza as the entire enclave will have to be leveled in order to destroy all of the dangerous weapons now aimed at Israel's population centers. No nation on earth should have to tolerate this situation nor can Israel be expected to do so indefinitely. The same goes for Southern Lebanon where 40,000 missiles are deployed in civilian areas.

'Militants??" Is that the PC term for today describing "good" MUSLIMS that fight and KILL (yelling out "allahu akbar" as they fire rockets). No..."militants", radicals, extremists, al-Qaida, fundamentalists, the Muslim Brotherhood, jihadists, or whatever is the PC term for today are actually "good" Muslims, not bad ones. The "militants" haven't corrupted Islam, hijacked their religion, nor interpreted it incorrectly, and therefore they aren't radicals or extremists!

Islam isn't a peaceful religion; it is a declaration of war against all mankind. While "bad" Muslims can be moderate, peaceful or "not-Muslim-enough", these people have NO influence because even their “holy” (cough-cough) Koran tells "good" Muslims to KILL them!!

I wish that our news organizations would answer that question instead of giving us the same 'ole terms like "militants" and "extremists" when all the evidence points that they are actually being "good" muslims...not BAD ones!!
    • Realist  •  6 mths ago
Does anyone think that rocket fire should be rewarded with statehood? Does anyone believe that the militants will be happy and peaceful if they are awarded statehood?

Palestine is a region, not an Arab nationality. It is not an Arab word, but a corruption of a word meaning Philistine. At no time has there been a Palestinian Arab kingdom, state or political entity, until it was created by Israel as part of a treaty with Arafat. Palestinian nationhood is a fraud that none of the Arab powers who endorse it believe, as they themselves proved when they annexed or ruled the land that would become the so-called "Occupied Territories", a term they would only begin using once Israel recaptured it in the Six Day War in 1967. Over two decades, no Palestinian state was ever created when Judea, Samaria and Gaza were in the hands of Egypt and Jordan. Only after two major military defeats caused the Arab powers to abandon future wars with Israel, did they decide to endorse that particular bit of mythology.

Please be more biased. They said the rocket was launched in response to an Israeli "threat"- THEY JUST SAID THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE ACTION TO STOP THE ROCKETS FROM BEING LAUNCHED AT ISRAEL AND HURTING THEIR CIVILIANS! Thats not a threat, thats a declaration of their rights! and I would LOVE to hear someone justify how that statement justifies a retaliatory rocket attack?

The world was never trying to rid the world of Jews the Zionist were trying to force them to Palestine. The Zionist said they were worth nothing if they were not in Palestine that they served no purpose. The R...oths..childs who are worth over 500 trillion dollars (over half the money in the world) Funded Hitler and created Palestine and while they claim to be Jews it is a well know fact that they are not. Some say they are atheist but the truth is they do believe in God they just chose to worship satan. They own all the central banks and control the governments of most of the world through blackmail and bribes which goes back to the Knights Templar.

All Gaza bottle rocket attacks are responses to Israeli provocations.
Yesterday the ZioNazi blew up some Gazan patrol boats, for little or no reason.
Israel needs Hamas bottle rockets in order to justify their relentless fanantical quest of...
      (you guessed it)...."A Greater Israel".
