GE, Goldman, jobless claims on tap

Earnings and jobless claims are the main events on today's calendar. Trading will likely be light with markets closed tomorrow for Good Friday.

General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, DuPont, PepsiCo, Union Pacific, UnitedHealth. and Schlumberger report earnings before the opening bell. Advanced Micro Devices and Select Comfort follow in the afternoon.

The Labor Department announces initial jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect a reading of 320,000, up from last week's long-term low of 300,000. Lower numbers are bullish for the economy because they indicate that fewer Americans lost their jobs.

Next week begins with results from Halliburton and Hasbro on Monday morning and Netflix in the afternoon.

Tuesday brings existing home sales, plus earnings from McDonald's, United Technologies, Travelers, and Lockheed Martin before the opening bell. AT&T, Yum Brands, Juniper Networks, Amgen, and VMware are the big names after the close.

Wednesday's morning lineup includes Boeing, Delta Air Lines, Biogen Idec, EMC, Norfolk Southern, and Dow Chemical. Apple, Facebook, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments dominate in the afternoon.

Thursday features jobless claims and durable-goods orders. Caterpillar, General Motors, Verizon Communications, and United Parcel Service are the big names in the morning. The afternoon brings results from Microsoft, Amazon.com, Visa, and Starbucks.

The week concludes with Whirlpool, Ford, Tyco, and VF on Friday morning.
