Geekville, USA: America's 20 Geekiest Cities

US Born and Foreign Born InnovatorsThere is no standard definition of a “geek.” However, the U.S. National Science Foundation has created a compelling taxonomy of American geeks for gathering the data it includes in its annual “Science and Engineering Indicators” report.

The most recent version of that report defines “geeks” as any workers with a bachelor’s level of knowledge and education in science or engineering-related fields or workers in occupations that require some degree of technical knowledge or training.

In the “Science and Engineering Indicators 2010,” the NSF ranked the top 20 cities in the United States by percentage of workers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics occupation.

Based on the NSF’s criteria, it turns out that the densest concentrations of geeks in U.S. cities is not necessarily where you would expect, with one big exception.

Here is the list in ascending order:

    1. San Jose, CA

    2. Boulder, CO

Is it just me, or does the writer not understand what 'ascending' and 'descending' means?
      • A Yahoo! User 9 mths ago
        That's true.
"Based on the NSF’s criteria, it turns out that the densest concentrations of geeks in U.S. cities is not necessarily where you would expect, with one big exception."
He also does not go on to explain that "one big exception".
      • K Wilson 9 mths ago
        I thinking the same thing
      • Kiddo 9 mths ago
I think that ONE big exception where you do expect it to be, refers to San Jose-Silicon Valley area.
    • San Jose Robert  •  9 mths ago
That lower list was in ASCENDING order, not DESCENDING order.
Yes, I guess that proves I'm a geek. And from San Jose, no less.

Non-geeks: ascending means going up; descending means going down. The percentage of geek workers was going up in each locale as you read down the list.
      • San Jose Robert 9 mths ago
Addendum: I didn't notice earlier...the first column of information was also described incorrectly; it's in DESCENDING order, not ASCENDING.

Mr. Pentland (the article's author) needs some geek lessons!
      • wulfman24 9 mths ago
Unless of course the number they are referring to is their place on the list and not the specific numbers of the cities. Then the article is correct.
      • Charly 9 mths ago
It's murky writing, at best, and clear, coherent writing is not the best area for so-called geeks either. But, alas, common sense is not so common anymore, and neither is paying attention to what words mean. However, in this case, "ascending" order is probably how a true geek would describe the first list, as far as arithmetic goes, but to real people an ascending list *leads* to the top or best item. An ascending list in NFL rankings or baseball batters ends with the top team or person, not the 15th or 30th.

      Where is Palo Alto??....Come on!!..Home of Facebook,HP,Stanford....Geek!
      • DEBACLE OF MASS ERUPTION. 9 mths ago
I think they mean talentless, poor geeks.
        Palo alto doesn't apply.
      • K Wilson 9 mths ago
I think they lumped the whole San Jose area together including Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto......
      • Kiddo 9 mths ago
Palo Alto and the rest of Santa Clara county are part of the San Jose MSA (metropolitan statistical area). Since you don't know this you are not geeky enough...
    • Speed  •  9 mths ago
whatch out for the geeks , be nice to them because the might become your boss one day
    • Keith  •  9 mths ago

      • Steve-o 9 mths ago
fitting, you ann arbor types are all geeks nerds dorks (it's all the same thing) and you are also dweebs cuz you are weak and not smart either just annoying awkward ugly lame and you suck at sports that's why you never win in football
      • season 9 mths ago
And look at the geeky nerd that was elected governor, who resides in Ann Arbor. Being designated as one of the "geekiest" cities is NOT an honor Keith.
      • christopher n 9 mths ago
Season, Steve-o, We can't hear you over how awesome we are.
    • Eric Anderson  •  9 mths ago
Nerd - someone that has a wide range of knowledge - computers, history, art, anything really.
Geek - someone that has a special range of knowledge - only computers, only history or art, etc.
Dork - someone that locks themselves up in their apartment all the time - problems in social situations.
Sometimes people can be a combination of two of these, but you cannot be all 3.
      • Michael 9 mths ago
I've seen something similar, except geek is someone that is into MMORPGs, D&D, comic books, video games, etc.
      • Wake up 9 mths ago
        (good at history AND computers)
cool that means I'm a nerd.
      • DEBACLE OF MASS ERUPTION. 9 mths ago
And all of them have only seen a vagina on wikipedia.
    • Chelsea S  •  9 mths ago
Go San Jose make that $$ LOL
    • chels  •  9 mths ago
HAHA I'm so a geek then, simply because I'm purusing engineering and have experience in a technical field. Something to be proud of? Absolutely.
    • angry cat  •  9 mths ago
Ann Arbor has a lot of GEEKS for sure
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
when your children report that the audience for the harry pottie flick was half-filled by 20, 30, or even older somethings attending solo, or more pathetically in geek groups, you can confirm your ville's place on this list.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
So this is where all the smart people live ... the hubs of human intelligence.
    • Anom  •  9 mths ago
Go Blue, we're a bunch of geeks for sure!!!!
    • the skeptic  •  9 mths ago
You better treat them well. One day you'll be working for one (if you don't already).
    • js  •  9 mths ago
are they really calling Bethesda a city now?
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
I live in San Jose, and it may be "the geekiest" but that doesn't mean the smartest. There are still people who can't spell better than a fifth grader and fail to find New Zealand on a world map, among other basic things.
    • WageslaveZ  •  9 mths ago
Michigan elected a "geek" in name only for governor. His name is Rick Snyder. He's really a corporate-industrialist dictator shill fronting for the Tea Party and the Koch Brothers. A geek wouldn't make it so kids can't afford to go college after being stuck in under-performing public schools that he just handed more funding from to his task masters that got him elected. A geek would emphasize science and mathematics as a platforms to start successful small businesses to take money out of Big Business's bloated pockets.

idiot author needs to look up what ascending and descending mean...dummy
    • JennG  •  9 mths ago
Olympia, Washington. Our state capital. No way.
    • IMAO  •  9 mths ago
I am also perturbed by the reversal of "ascending" and "descending" in the list titles. Both are wrong. Do they teach English wherever William Pentland went to school? Perhaps these mathematical concepts are beyond the scope of authors.
