Geelong beats Hawthorn to stay atop Aussie rules

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The Geelong Cats pulled away in the fourth quarter Monday to beat defending champions Hawthorn 15.16 (106) to 12.15 (87) and remain the only unbeaten team after five rounds in the Australian Football League.

Before 80,222 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Tom Hawkins kicked five goals. Geelong led by three points after the first quarter, six points at halftime and eight after three quarters.

Among other Australian Football League fifth-round matches, Nick Reiwoldt kicked five goals to lead St. Kilda to a 11.15 (81) to 9.11 (65) victory over Essendon and Port Adelaide beat West Coast 10.10 (70) to 7.14 (56).

Carlton won its first match of the season after four losses with an 18.11 (119) to 13.13 (91) win over the Western Bulldogs.
