Geithner: Obama seeks 28 percent corp. tax rate

Geithner: Obama plan would make corporate tax system fairer and more globally competitive

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says the current corporate tax system is outdated, unfair and inefficient. He is calling for an end to dozens of subsidies and loopholes that he says offer tax breaks to companies that move jobs and profits overseas.

Obama says the current system is "not right and it needs to change."

The Obama administration is proposing cutting corporate tax rates from 35 percent to 28 percent. That is still higher than the 25 percent rate sought by congressional Republicans.

Obama said in a statement Wednesday that his framework lowers the corporate tax rate and broadens the tax base and will increase competitiveness for companies across the U.S.

Why don't they lower the tax rate for small business owners who end up creating the most sustainable jobs. I pay 15% federal taxes, 15% self employment, + local state taxes. I am a small business owner making less than 50K per year and am being taxed more than giant corporations and the wealthiest Americans? I am not asking to not be taxed but taxed fairly.
      • mike b 3 mths ago
Exactly. Small business hire more and much quicker than big business. The small business should pay no tax until they make over say 200k. Its all a sham. smoke and mirrors
      • Willie 3 mths ago
Did you know that the top 40 companies in this country pay more money for lobbyists than they do taxes to the Federal Treasury? This 28% is a down payment for all of those loopholes; also, do not think for a moment this will cost jobs. Most all jobs are in medium and small business. We tried to get small and medium businesses help during financial reform legislation but the Republicans blocked it: "Too much government interference."
      • N 3 mths ago
Obama just lowered taxes for small businesses and individuals.

I want to see big OIL pay taxes. Stop paying Billionaires with our tax money!

Mike/Super Dad: They should all be paying taxes, but be ready for increases that will cost us.
      • Super Dad 3 mths ago
I don't care! PAY TAXES LIKE ME!
    • Tempest  •  3 mths ago
No matter the tax rate, anyone that thinks that consumers are not paying these taxes is a fool.
      • javan p 3 mths ago
Using that logic, the consumers' employers are paying those taxes, but wait!-no the employers' consumers are paying their taxes, BUT!!!--THEIR employers are paying their taxes!! OMG!--it's a vicious cycle!!!
      • Jusme 3 mths ago
Consumers and employees - you can bet pay will go down if costs go up.

At last, Tempest, a ray of light in the desert. And Javan P: well, yeah. Companies don't pull tax money out of their behinds.

So there is hope that Obamacare will be repealed if someone else is elected? I'm tired of paying for everything that I don't benefit from.
      • Jesse 3 mths ago
No Obama will not be repealed
      • Raymond 3 mths ago
Jesse, Unless you've been living in a Cave, the Health Care Law is before the U.S. Supreme Court. The Main Issue is whether or not the taxpayer should be forced to buy Health Care is the first place. If the U.S. Supreme Court rules that that portion of the Health Care Law is Unconsitutional, then the Health Care Law is Dead! The reason being that in their haste to pass the Health Care Law, the Democrats forgot to put a "Severability" clause in the Health Care Law. Most Laws of large size and scope have something called a “severability clause” attached to them. Essentially, this means that if one part of a piece of large legislation is ruled unconstitutional by a court, that unconstitutional portion is “severed” from the rest of the bill — the ruling doesn’t stop the rest of the Law from being enforced. That indicates that if Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is successful in his Virginia case against the individual mandate, the entire legislation could collapse.

It seems, since it's election time, the Republicans think religion is the most important issue at this time, no matter you're opinion of Mr. Obama his direction is better for the country than theirs.
      • gregh 3 mths ago
Haha, Qualia - Republican politicians in the past few weeks have been all over religion: "Obama hates jesus! Vote republican if you love jesus!"

my tax burden has gone up the last 3 years. the withholdings on my pension literally tripled. Also I'm unable to write off tax preparation fees as they don't total a certain percentage of my adjusted gross income. That's just the facts. My net income on my limited/fixed pension has gone down over the last 3 years while the cost of everything has gone up

Timothy Geithner didn't pay any Social Security and Medicare taxes for several years while he worked for the International Monetary Fund. In 2006, the IRS audited Mr. Geithner's 2003 and 2004 taxes and concluded he owed taxes and interest totaling $17,230. The IRS waived the related penalties. I bet they won't waive yours:-)

Think of the money that could be raised if the lobyists were banned and the tax loop holes closed. Go back to the Tax rates of the 30's and 40's. These people were just as rich, even paying higher tax rates. All I see is a group of rich people trying to protect their rich backers and their friends.

This is the system that allowed GE to pay zero in taxes so what does it even matter what the rate is set at the corporations aren't going to be paying anyhow
    • TIM  •  3 mths ago
The whole progressive party is as hypocritical as it gets. Either he can't make up his mind whether taxes and regulations should be hightened or lowered or this is just another election year pile of crap.
    • Get Real  •  3 mths ago
How is this a good idea now and not in January 2009. Ah yes. Another re-election gimmick.
    • John  •  3 mths ago
Give tax breaks to companies who employ full time US citizens in a decent job with benefits. Eliminate tax breaks for outsourcing. The only difference would be to raise the tax rate so this tax break is more beneficial. The biggest threat to jobs is outsourcing and building factories and offices outside this country.
    • Swamy  •  3 mths ago
      I want Geitner's 0% tax rate.

is this the same Geithner that REFUSES to comply with an August 2011 subpoena to testify about JPMorgan's demands for $8.6 billion in collateral from Lehman before the company went under,?
Geithner, is a known TAX EVADER

Any corporate tax is passed to the consumer anyway. Higher taxes means higher priced goods.
    • ET3  •  3 mths ago
More lies. Real issue is to raise taxes on American business interests overseas. In which case, they will simply move overseas.

Sadly, we are all the puppets of the government and we don't even realize it. If we really want to see change then we are going to have to push back against the government. Politicians usually enter politics with good cause and reason, but once they sip the power from the holy grail, they are hooked for life and will do anything it takes to hold onto that power. Rather than pointing fingers and blame at eachother and the government, we should be uniting to say that enough is enough. For me, it's time to live a self sustainable lifestyle so that I do not have to rely on anyone, especially the government.

A Corporate Tax is two things:

      1) A Hidden Tax On The Poor & Middle Class! When ANY business determines the price at the register for it's goods or services, they take into consideration ALL operational costs: Labor, Overhead, Taxes, Materials, etc... If any one of the costs go up, they have to increase the price of their product or they'll go out of business. So what happens is the cost of the tax gets rolled into the price of the product and the poor and middle class end up paying it! It's not a tax on corporations! It's a tax on us, but most of us are too stupid to realize it because it says corporate tax! They are taxing YOU the individual, and obfuscating that fact behind class warfare!

      2) A form of class warfare that attacks itself. What I mean by that is that not all corporations are large multinationals. Most are just mom & pop shops that incorporated to simplify their taxes. These shop owners generally make as much or less than your average college educated business professional, and it does't make sense to give them this double tax, which is first a huge tax against their business, which limits their profit and ability to pay salary ... and then to tax the salary with income tax. So as I said, it's supposed to be class warfare bidding the poor and middle class against the rich ... only the effect is that the poor and middle class are attacking them selves.
