Former President George H.W. Bush said and his wife, Barbara, are bowing out of attending Donald Trump’s inauguration, saying in a note to the president-elect that he might not survive it.

“My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it will likely put me six feet under,” Bush said in the letter, which was released by his office. “So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”

Bush, 92, was hospitalized in Houston over the weekend for shortness of breath. But the note is dated Jan. 10.

“We will be with you and the country in spirit,” Bush wrote. “I want you to know that I wish you the very best as you begin this incredible journey of leading our great country. If I can ever be of help, please let me know.”

Bush and his son, former President George W. Bush, did not endorse Trump and reportedly did not vote for him. The younger Bush, former President Bill Clinton and defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton plan to attend the inauguration.
