George Will: ‘We’re at the horrid stage with Newt Gingrich’ [VIDEO]

On Sunday’s “This Week” on ABC, Washington Post columnist George Will continued his criticism of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, saying, “We’re at the horrid stage with Newt Gingrich.”

Earlier on the show, Gingrich continued his own criticisms of his opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, calling him a “maniacal liar.” That, Will said, is telling of some of Gingrich’s vulnerabilities.

“Time is not Newt Gingrich’s friend because the more time he has the more he talks,” Will commented. “The more he talks the more he says things, as he just did here this morning. He said, ‘I would love to be civil, but I’m running against a maniacal liar.’ Now, that’s pretty strong language.” (RELATED: George Will: ‘You can associate many things with Mr. Gingrich, but wisdom isn’t one of them’)

Will cited Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s nursery rhyme as a way to illustrate how “horrid” Gingrich had become.

“I don’t know if you have ever told Longfellow’s nursery rhyme to your 4-year-old daughter, Alice,” Will said to Tapper, reciting:

    There is a little girl
    Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead,
    When she was good,
    She was very good indeed,
    When she was bad,
    She was horrid.

“We’re at the horrid stage with Newt Gingrich,” Will concluded.

Horrid is not a strong enough word. Newt's recent battle with the press is typical. IMHO Newt does not belong in the White House. As an Independent, I am not pleased with Obama and crew, but I am leaning towards Obama, but I'd like to throw the rest of the bumbs out, especially this Congress.

Really? Doomed? Really? Wow, we had a good run, greatest, most, powerful, most free nation in the history of the planet. And, now, we're just one election away from Doom. Really?

Boot the Newt, the horrid chickenhack adulterer

Newt doesn't seem to realize that the more he lashes out at people the more he is seen as someone who is incapable of doing anything but lash out at people.

Pat Buchanan was Reagan's Press Secretary during the Reagan Administration, he said Reagan considered Newt Gingrich an opportunist politician that was not to be trusted.
      • KatH 3 mths ago
        and Pat Buchanan should know.....

We've been at the 'horrid' stage of the entire Republican party since they chose GWB over McCain, Haig, and Powell in 2000... What was THAT all about...
      • dabears 3 mths ago
Not hardly/ Powell is a liberal, McCain is in over his head and Haig should have found other employment.

Newt has totally lost it. Too bad... but he is not presidential material.
      • Ken Sears 3 mths ago
You haven't SEEN "lost it" till you see Romney go totally spastic when his campaign totally tanks against Obama. And I'm saying this as a conservative, Republican voter! This is why I'm against Romney! He's got NOTHING but cliches and MONEY. And he's thrown all the filth, and money, he possibly could, at any threat from the Republican field. He won't have the bucks to overwhelm Obama and his inevitably hysterical, cliche-ridden and hopelessly plastic, smarmy, used-car-salesman delivery is going to repel, finally, EVERYONE. It's all over, it's really all over. The Republican party committed suicide in 2012.

Where was all these self serving people. When we tilted near a Depression. and entered Wars that only served Bush ego, and the War Department greed ?.
    • Mark  •  San Diego, California  •  3 mths ago
Newt's been saying the same stuff about President Obama and Democrats for years. It's not until he says it about a Republican that George writes him off?
    • james  •  Santa Barbara, California  •  3 mths ago
Good job, Newt! Your outlandish, hyperbolic and histrionic tirades against Romney will ultimately be seen as little more than vengeful, dishonest, and hate filled self serving irrationalities. If you served up criticisms that were actually well founded and legitimate concerns for Mitt's years of pandering to suit his constituencies and audiences, those comments could be used against him by the Obama campaign. You're giving them nothing that genuine adult human beings would never dare repeat. I can't wait for the phony fence mending and circling of the wagons that will inevitably occur after M.R. wins the nomination and you need to appear supportive for the good of the party and the American way. You are turning any chance that you might have had to be treated kindly by history into a train wreck. Thanks for confirming what many of us have thought of you for years. It's not ego folks; it's uber-insecurity.
      • Ken Sears 3 mths ago
Yeah, boy, like that criticism about sponsoring a bill in support of China's one-child policy... OH WAIT, that was Romney's crock of S*IT thrown at Gingrich. Okay, but what about that slimy comment about being forced to resign in disgrace because of an ethics investigation... OH WAIT, that was ROMNEY'S crock of S*IT, intentionally making it sound like Gingrich got fined and left Congress the same day. Okay, but how about those outlandish, hyperbolic tirades about him being against Reagan and... OH WAIT, that was ROMNEY'S crock of S*IT... and then when Gingrich calls Romney "LIAR" (perfectly appropriate word) all the uptight, establishment types throw a hissy fit and scream foul. Romey's totally sleazy, hypocritical and cynical grab to buy this nomination is going to work, and then Obama is going to trounce him. So, hey, congratulations, defend THE LOSER all you want. Talk about uber-insecurity... my god, The Rombie is the King of it. He has gone SPASTIC every time he's been threatened, and thrown ALL the money, and filth, he possibly could at every Republican rival. Good job, Rombo.... You've earned my everlasting contempt.

lol . George is sad because they have no real candidate . I watched the debate the other night and Ron Paul made the most sense but, 2 thirds of what he said sounded like OBAMA . I mean Santorum actually gave a small speech on communism...... 1986 was 26 years ago. He was talking about Cuba. Cuba is like a garter snake but were in bed with a Python (Bush borrowed money from China ). What was he talking about ?

If there is a soul on the face of this earth that knows a lie, it's Newt. He is a Master of deceit. To be calling Mitt a liar is a defensive ploy that everyone in Newts position would use. Trouble for Newt is, the defense is coming from Newt...so who will trust that line of defense?
Will, as usual has hit the ball out of the park with his take on Newt.
    • Leon  •  Miami, Florida  •  3 mths ago
Better a maniacal liar than an obese, rotted-mouth, pus-filled, foul-odored piece of waste like you, Newt.
    • Jarema  •  3 mths ago
The Republican Party is Oz the Great and Powerful , or so they would have us believe. It really doesn't matter whether the little man behind the curtain is Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney.
