      flew 50 missions over germany in ww2. a real hero. a conscience that spoke to the better hearts and minds of america during a terrible time in our history. I hope he is doing well now.

      What I liked about Mcgovern is that he at least respected George W Bush, and he complemented Nixon for his practical approach on China and the USSR.

      His missions were over more than just Germany, he may have been in the air raids over the fuel facilities in Romania, which were heavily defended, many crews were shot down, he made sure his crews always made it back despite flying a disabled plane over enemy territory. He was NOT a chicken hawk.

      My goodness! I've heard some things about George McGovern, and had lived for about a year in South Dakota (specifically, Vermillion, Yankton, and Sioux Falls areas). I hope McGovern makes a good recovery from this

      He flew 35 missions in a B-24 over Europe and was awarded the DFC. He never used that fact while running for office. He is a class act.

        Crews were sent home after 25 missions. He had to volunteer to stay for the extra missions.

        Originally an American heavy bomber crew had to complete 25 sorties to be rotated home. This limit was increased to 35 in the summer of 1944.

      Best wishes for a strong recovery from fmr. Senator McGovern. My 88-year-old grandfather fell over a chair and cracked several ribs. The next time he fell, it was in the bathroom. He cracked his head, and died two weeks later. Everyone who is elderly or unsteady on their feet, please be careful.

      This does not sound good. None of the customary reassurances from spokesmen that he's doing well & resting comfortably, etc. etc. etc. Hard blows to the head at age 89 don't usually end well.

      But here's hoping. The 1972 campaign was a disaster, but it does not diminish the service he has rendered his country over the years.

      McGovern should be fine. After all he has previously survived a far more severe fall, his historic fall in the 1972 election. He survived that fall, he will survive this one as well. He is a tough old bird.

      How sad and disturbing this must be for him. Falls are so common in the elderly. I pray for him to get well.
