George W. Bush to raise cancer awareness in Africa

DALLAS (AP) — Former President George W. Bush will travel to Africa next month to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer, an effort he calls a "natural extension" of a program launched during his presidency that helps fight AIDS on the continent.

Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and officials with the George W. Bush Institute are heading to Tanzania, Zambia and Ethiopia from Dec. 1 through Dec. 5, where they'll visit clinics and meet with governmental and health care leaders.

"We believe it's in our nation's interest to deal with disease and set priorities and save lives," Bush told The Associated Press.

In 2003, Bush launched the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, to expand AIDS prevention, treatment and support programs in countries hit hard by the epidemic.

The new program, called the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon initiative, seeks to expand the availability of cervical cancer screening and treatment and breast care education in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Bush said existing AIDS clinics will be used to screen and treat cervical cancer, which is four to five times more common among those living with HIV than those who don't have the virus. Last year, 3.2 million people received antiretroviral treatments as a result of PEPFAR.

The initiative is a partnership that includes the Bush Institute, PEPFAR, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the United Nations' program on HIV and AIDS. Its goals include reducing cervical cancer deaths by 25 percent in five years among women screened and treated through the initiative.

"We want to show what works and hopefully others across the continent of Africa will join us,'" Bush said.

Dr. Eric G. Bing, director of global health at the Bush Institute, said it's often more difficult for African women to reveal they have cancer of the reproductive organs than to reveal they have HIV. There are more support groups and treatment available for HIV than cancer, he said.

"There's silence around cancer for many of these communities and in many of these nations. And that's one of the things that we hope to change," Bing said.

Bush moved to Dallas after leaving office in 2009. The George W. Bush Presidential Center, which is set to be completed in 2013 on the campus of Southern Methodist University, will include his presidential library and the already-operating policy institute. Besides global health, the institute focuses on education reform, human freedom and economic growth.

Bush said he and the former first lady will be "pouring our hearts" into the Bush presidential center as it grows.

"This is where we will spend the rest of our lives in the sense of being involved with public policy," Bush said.

This is amazing. The Africans will get a cervical cancer blood test free, while our insurance companies here in the U. S. charge EXTRA to citizens who want the test. And I understand it is expensive! Thank goodness Mr. & Mrs. Bush are able to get the clinics that test blood for HIV to also test it for cervical and breast cancer, which is rampant there, but it is ALSO rampant here in America. Too bad Mr. Obama's health care plan doesn't provide for that simple blood work to be part of the prevention program of his plan. The middle class pay for EVERYTHING in this country. The poor get it free, and the rich do too!

Someones gotta pay the Republicans are getting paid from the medical industry.
      • NoStocksForMe 6 mths ago
What is your point? are you bashing Obama or Bush? if you're saying the exams are expensive wouldn't you think Bush would want to do something for America instead of Africa? what does Obama has to do with anything?
      • Karen 6 mths ago
Well Obama's helath care bill puts more people on Medicaid (of course primarily paid for by the broke states) so theyn will get all these free things and guess who will pay. Once again those of us actually pay taxes.

More men die of colon cancer then women die of breast cancer yet there really isn't any awareness for colon cancer. I know boobs are more fun to talk about then colons are but there should be something. Don't you think?

chuck you farley. my brother is going in for surgery tomorrow, the day before thanksgiving for surgery at 42 years old, he if lucky enough to live will wear a colostomy bag the rest of his life.

Wow my prayers for your brother...that's horrible.

And as a woman, I am sick of the "awareness" for breast cancer. It's all a scam, the charities raise all this money but they'll never find a cure. Why? It would cut off the gravy train! Besides, it's just another trendy way for people to look like they care and are doing something without actually doing anything. These are usually the people who, if they have a family member with cancer, will not call, visit, help them out in any way....because it's quicker and easier to toss money at a problem.

Anyone dealing with Cancer should check out the Gerson Institute in San Diego...their program is working for me...tumor on my foot was growing back (was surgically removed in 2005)...its completely gone now...no drugs, no surgery...blood test show everything in normal range (except Creatine which you get from meat and fish...have been eating more fruits and veggies than ever before...and juicing)...so I've ordered some Creatine powder and I'm sure that in no time...all of my numbers will be good. Thanks Gerson Institute...you guys are truly heroes!

It's nice to talk about this, but how about we get people in the US screened first? Or just let natural selection play out

Why in hell is everybody so damned concerned about Africa when we have so much that needs attention here at home? My mother taught me that charity begins at home.

I had no idea he was interested in AIDS in Africa. ""We believe it's in our nation's interest to deal with disease and set priorities and save lives," Bush told The Associated Press." ..... ... How come the nation's interest isn't dealing with disease and saving lives in the United States?

Nixon used wiretapping, lying, burgularizing, smear, fear, character assassination, and illegal entry as his policy. Back then all of that was considered illegal. George W. Bush made it all legal with the "patriot" act. Now due to him the government can wire tap, open your email, search your house without warrants, arrest and hold you in jail without limit with no charges and no court appearance in sight. George W. Bush took this country to a war in Iraq based on lies of WMD and a false connection to 911 that cost the USA over a trillion dollars, 4,000 innocent troop lives and over 200,000 innocent civilian lives. Countless men, women and little children also maimed and crippled. This isn't my opinion it is now written in facts, video and history, even though those who support Bush are trying to rewrite the past. Bush is a war criminal and he should be in prison. Due to Osama Bin Laden's plans and leadeship over 3,000 innocent American lives were destroyed in the Word Trade Center attacks on 911. Due to George W. Bush and his plans and leadership over 200,000 innocent Iraqi lives were destroyed in a war based on lies. Later George W. Bush during a Republican dinner/fund raiser joked about the lack of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq with the "no weapons here no weapons there" joke while Republicans laughed. I am sure the families of the dead that are gone now because of Bush policy are not laughing at his jokes. He is a war criminal in every sense of the definition and he should have been arrested and tried. He is an embarrassment to our country and he has brought major dishonor to the USA around the world with his policies. We can blame Democrats too for going along with him too much and not having the spine to prosecute him even today. They continue to patronize the Republicans who work hard to destroy good programs that help people and save lives daily, such as health care, Medicare and Social Security. Democrats need to fight against Republican efforts to destroy worker rights and efforts to crush unions who protect Americans from being over worked, under paid, exploited, abused and forced to work in toxic and unsafe condtions. Fascist policies are being passed off as "good for Americans" and "patriotic" by Republicans and Tea people who are really working more for corporation greed, power and profit. The Republican party is destroying this country and Democrats are spinelessly not fighting hard enough to stop them.

Did Bush's policies of deregulation and Tax breaks for the wealthy policies prevent over 47 Thousand factories in America from OFF SHORING US jobs ??? NO...

Workers from 47K former US factories had their jobs OFF SHORED... just imagine them no longer being able to afford their house notes... or Credit card bills... Imagine the effect it would have on the economy as a whole!

No need to imagine... the results are documented now... Republican policy does NOTHING for US Job Creation... but it does enable big business to off shore jobs...

The insults, and blame game do nothing but get everyone's mind off of solving any problem. And it works very well for politicians who won't do anything about it. Keep the people fighting, and you keep their minds off the people who should be solving the problems.
