‘It Gets Heated’: Twin Sisters Divided Over Occupy Wall Street

Growing up, twin sisters Nicole and Jill Carty had a lot in common.

But around the age of 14, Nicole Carty told ABC News today, they started going in different directions — and they never stopped, with Nicole Carty attending Brown University for a degree in sociology and Jill Carty heading to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue degrees in international business and studies.

Now with the Occupy Wall Street movement more than a month old, the recent Ivy League graduates have found themselves on Wall Street but on opposing sides.

Nicole Carty, who works for a television station, spends her free time in Zuccotti Park, Occupy Wall Street’s headquarters, organizing general assembly meetings for the demonstrators.

Jill Carty works for a company that assists financial service  clients. She said although she agreed with some of the protesters’ sentiments, she did not support more government regulations and intervention.

“I feel that’s what’s gotten us into this mess in the first place,” she told ABC News Wednesday. “There are always unintended consequences with government intervention.”

She said it was no secret among her family that she and Nicole Carty had different views on Occupy Wall Street and its message.

“I’d be very much more pleased if she [Nicole Carty] would be able to come up with solutions to these problems [voiced by protesters] that use the tools of the country and the world like economics and things that I feel have potential really to change the way that things work and the way people behave,” Jill Carty said.

But Nicole Carty said that her sister’s politics were completely wrong and off base.

“[Jill Carty] lacks a fundamental understanding of structural oppression that is inexcusable and immature,” she said. “She just really trusts capitalism and doesn’t recognize that capitalism is kind of responsible for a lot of the injustices we have in the world.”

I wonder why we never see protests against lobbyists? I have always wondered how Government would work if we manged to get rid of all lobbyists and let our elected officials actually do the will of the people and not the will of the lobbyists and special interest groups.

Professor do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

        Professor: Sure, I'll play along.

        Did you support Obamacare?

        Professor: Yes.

Then you do not accept freewill and you are a potential tyrant.

Professor: You just flunked this course pal.

Hey climate scientist, do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

Climate scientist: I don't believe a Creator exist let alone that one allows freewill.

AGW Skeptic: Einstein was right: Science without the [Creator] is blind and religion without the [Creator] is lame.

Climate scientist: Silence skeptic! We must sacrifice your rights and do what's best for society as we see fit. Don’t you know science is a democracy fool!

AGW Skeptic: Ben Franklin was right.

CRU emails: Burn the Skeptic’s book!!

Hey Hillary, Nancy, Harry, Obama, progressive intellectuals and Dems, do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

Choir: We must sacrifice the rights of the individual and do what’s best for society.

Who decides what’s best? Certainly not society -see Obamacare.

Choir: From one, many -see Obamacare.

Al Gore: e pluribus unum - from one, many. The science is settled! Everybody knows science is a democracy - the skeptics are trying to turn science upside down - leading to backwards conclusions.

Saul Alinsky: Pick a target, freeze it, smear it, ridicule it.

Professor: The founders were racist capitalist pig slave holders.

Common Sense: I see a pattern: Professor with all due respect the Founding Fathers knew they couldn’t fight the Civil War before the American Revolution or shortly thereafter and remain United States. They were wise enough to put mechanisms in place though.

Hey JournoList, do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

JournoList: We must sacrifice the profession and do what is best for society.

Hey Bill O'Really, Dr. K., FOX News, do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

FOX Choir: Why do they even have all these debates? Don't the people know Romney is inevitable....it's inevitable that Romney is inevitable...Romney is the only inevitable candidate....Romney...Romney.....Romney....

Hey King George III, do you believe Our Creator allows freewill?

King George III: I will squash you for even suggesting it is not my divine right to rule over you.

People, vote with your dollars. Support your local businesses, manufacturers, and growers with the purchases you make.
      • Chaplain Joe 7 mths ago
I so agree with you Squeegee...but it is after all a capitalistic view that leads to a productive society. I mean, who would support one's local businesses if it causes them to benefit from their local middle class and its working class poor, even though those same businesses provide jobs to the same? Do these capitalistic businesses, and the self-employed, really keep the community in the black by taking advantage of the opportunities America has to offer the local economy? I mean, think about it, even China has figured out that capitalism works! How do you think they are able to be as productive as a power if it were not for the money its socialists make?
      • Chaplain Joe 7 mths ago
I think this is a case of the young protesters of American enterprise being dumb and even dumber. Sometimes educators use education as a tool to manipulate its students into believing that capitalism is to blame for every ill and evil in the world. If the commies can see that capitalism works, why can't our young educated children? Maybe these adults by age, still have the minds of children without the skills and benefit of cognitive thinking? Perhaps it is because they cannot reason due to their immaturity? Yes, I think that is it!

true capitalism is oliver twist. its not a 40 hour work week nor is it any vacation days, true unabriged capitalism doesnt have a middle class. Marx is only correct if idiots take capitalism as far right as it goes...i.e Enron, AIG, Goldman, Worldcom, TYCO...etc, etc , etc. Liberal modifications to the system such as education subsidies, overtime pay, weekends, OSHA, EPA standards, modest bank regulation, taxes, minimum wage....these things are needed to protect capitalism from what marx called the dialectic merchantalism of history or enslavement of the masses. Without some protections, capitalism great as it is for production, cuts off the branch it sits on by reducing wages to subsistance and ultimately sub-subsistance wages. The enemy of capitalism isnt labor, it is other capitalists. If one owner can cut labor a dollar, his competitors MUST follow suit or lose out. If one factory must pay more to protect the environment, they are at a disadvantage. When government enacts sound regulation to force all companies to play by the same rules it safegaurds capitalism from itself. Communism and capitalism are both evil when taken to their LOGICAL EXTREMES. Single payer health care is not Bolshivism. Obama is a far cry from Trotsky. By that same token, Wall Street is not the damn Reichstaed. Americans need to get some common sense and start some avtual dialogue with one another. College doesnt make people communists rather it explains the theories of economics well enough to allow one to ascertain what the heck communism actually is. Try college yourself, you seem to make the common GOP mistake of confusing Bolshivik Communism with the New Deal.

Capitalism works when it is not corrupted. However when you bail out banks and the financial sector that is not Capitalism. When you pick winners & losers that is not Capitalism. When you buy Politicians votes that is not Capitalism.
    • LP  •  7 mths ago
This board gives me a headache sometimes. This is a complex issue and most people oversimplify it into dirty commie hippies vs evil greedy capitalist pigs. The answer of course, with this and most political issues, is somewhere in the middle. Communism has been tried and had failed. Unchecked capitalism always creates tremendous social problems. What is so bad about admitting that the other side DOES have a point and try to reach a compromise. I don't buy into the notion that rich people are evil but I think its silly to bow down to them as "job creator" saviors of the economy. Communism is not the answer but a world driven by profit margins will not last last long. Issues are rarely black and white so please can we try to be a little more tolerant of each others views? I am just as guilty as many, I am just tired of it now.

Bottom line - Don't ever let anyone take away your freedom which has been fought for by brave Americans who suffered and died for this right.
Do not, I say again, do not support a government that wishes to grow until they are running your lives. Always take the less government route when possible.
When you receive entitlements from the government (which is another way of saying "buying your vote") you will also receive government control of your life.
Watch your back and God Bless.

I have to agree with another poster here. Capitolism isn't the problem, it's corruption... (credit to Draven). Mistake number one $700 billion dollar govt. bailout to Wall Street, big banks and corporations who in turn pocketed all their profits, paid big bonuses to their CEO's and turned their backs on pledges to create jobs. I think that more so than anything has gotten most people #$%$ off.
