Getting More People to Care About Missing Black Women

After years of complaints in African-American circles about the lack of attention paid to missing black women in this country, a U.S. cable network dedicated to black programming begins a revolutionary series this week.

The program, called " Find Our Missing," is scheduled to begin airing tonight on TV One, a black cable network available in 56 million homes.

The network is working with the Black and Missing Foundation, a group of black professionals who keep track of missing black Americans - cases that are often ignored or unreported. The sheer number of faces that peer back from its website is startling. Most of the missing are from New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland and Florida.

According to FBI figures, nearly 40 percent of all missing persons are people of color, but critics say that the most media attention is reserved for white women.

Craig Henry, executive in charge or production at TV One, says the presumption in this country is that "black people live in impoverished conditions, so there's not the same sense of outrage" when black Americans disappear.

"We are also accustomed to seeing stories and news reports of black people involved in criminal activity, and not very often the victims of crimes," he said.

Derrica Wilson, the CEO and co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation, says it is the public's attention and media  coverage that help find the missing, and this new effort could save lives or give families closure. She said many of the missing black women are victims of human trafficking. Since 2008, her organization has helped to either locate or bring closure to 71 missing persons cases. This January alone, the organization helped find six people, and all six were found alive.

"We all know that black and Latinos, or any person of color, who go missing oftentimes do not receive the much needed media coverage, which could drastically increase the odds of their safe recovery," she said.

"It is time for all people - regardless of race - to be treated equally in their times of greatest need," said Natalie Wilson, another co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation.

"When we hear the term 'missing persons,' most people conjure up images of Chandra Levy, Caylee Anthony or Natalee Holloway," Wilson said. "As a result, the public is misled in believing that victims of abductions and kidnappings are [all]blond, blue-eyed and female."

Both the Black and Missing Foundation and TV One point to the cases of 36-year-old Stacey English of Atlanta, and 23-year-old Phoenix Coldon of St. Louis. Both women went missing at the end of December, and authorities say the cases are strikingly similar.

For example, the vehicles of both women were found abandoned and still running just miles from their homes. And the man authorities say English had last seen was from St. Louis, where Coldon disappeared. Their families say neither case has generated the kind of national attention or questions they believe would have occurred if the young women had been white.

"It's sad that this may be the case," said Cindy Jamison, the mother of Stacy English. She, her husband, Kevin Jamison, and a small army of relatives and friends have been searching Atlanta for weeks. On the phone today she told me, "Here we are crying for everyone to show Stacey's face, trying to get whoever would listen to listen, and whoever would have us to tell her story…. and [the lack of national attention] does make us think."

Craig Henry of TV One says the new series is a set of "mystery tales," and this is the best way to grab viewer interest in these cases, many of them quite cold.

"These are stories, and we immerse you in the lives of these missing people," he said. "These are people you get to know, you see their families, see their normal lives, and then one day you learn that they are gone. We want to get people to empathize and get people to care about these stories."

Many men goes missing evey year and so does seniors. They need equal exposure also. The media only cares abut young white females because it makes good ratings. Ask Nancy Grace and ask her how much money she made just reporting on Caylee Anthony, Natalee Holloway or JonBennet Ramsey.

        does that make it right?

The media brings the most attention to missing CHILDREN, black or white. I almost never hear of missing white women either.
      • CC 4 mths ago
This statement is ignorant. The idea behind it is that black women go missing more often and are more at risk. They are a population at risk, not the black men or seniors. Although, that does happen, it is not as likely and not as big of a problem. You sound like a spoiled child that just saw his brother get something he wanted for Christmas.

You people either cant read or cant comprehend simple context at all. The Foundation may have been made for Blacks, but they welcome other races of color too. Go back and read the article again, gosh.

The only people to blame for which missing people get attention is the media. They have COMPLETE control of which missing persons get the spotlight. If they want missing black women to get more attention then hype the story like you do for the others you hype. Thousands of women of EVERY color are missing in this country but the media determines which ones the populace cares about by creating a media sensation.
This is a self licking ice cream cone!
      • JustMe 4 mths ago
Um that is who they are blaming. Did you not read the article?
      • JJMurray 4 mths ago
Um - It's ABC News but I didn't see anywhere in the article where they pointed out their own bad behavior. What I see is an article where they quote other organizations who note that the media doesn't do enough. No meaculpa here at all.

Since when was Chandra Levey blond and blue eyed????? Had she not been fooling around with a California Congressman, I doubt her case would have ever made the national news either.

Here's a news flash for the group: MOST disappearances aren't considered newsworthy by the media unless they can find an angle that makes the story interesting enough to sell a newspaper. It isn't about race. There are families of all races who struggle to get word out about a missing family member. How about the men who were murdered in OH? No one heard about those men being missing until the media learned they were victims of a craigslist scam. Poor little Jhessye Shockley from AZ was all over the media. She was black. Why was her story covered by the media but not Stacey English's (or any other teen/young adult)? Because she was a small child and there were odd details to the case. Families everywhere struggle to get their missing child's name (or any other family member) and photo out when that child goes missing. It ain't a black thing. It's a media $ thing. These families need to do what all the others (who've made national media) have done: use the net, be a pain, circulate photos on your own, conduct searches on your own, spend $$ of your own, and maybe, just maybe, you will stir the interest of your local media and they'll decide to cover the story. IF they do it and it's considered 'interesting', then regional media will pick up the story. Stop blaming EVERYTHING on race. It's getting old.

How is putting it on a black channel going to get anymore response from whites?
    • Clown  •  4 mths ago
Simple rule. sad truth. if they're cute, people will care - regardless of color.
    • Geria  •  4 mths ago
The black community has to care MORE through their own organized efforts to find these women. In this way, a nationwide search, rescue, and recovery can commence....that's just reality.

Want to know the dirty little secret why it's only pretty young white girls that get face time on the teevee when they go missing? Sex. That's it.

Somebody should start an organization promoting the value of missing ugly white kids, because they get ignored as much as the black kids.

It is not about dividing people, but about giving people the same attention. Stating what is the reality is NOT dividing people, it is saying "hey, there are HUGE discrepencies here and we should work to fix them,".

what?!!? people are complaining about racism?? oh my god!!!why is it racism when white people voice an opinion but its "speaking out for people" when a black person does it??if i started W.E.T... White Ent.Telivision,,, the world would explode,,,yet no one says a word about how racist BET is,,,racism does and will be an issue forever,, because we let it,,, period,,,personaly i dont care what color you are,,,a person is a person is a person,,and if a white person was #$%$ about the lack of tv time for meth crimes in midwest towns you people would be freaking out about how racist he was right??i thought so

Chandra Levy, Caylee Anthony or Natalee Holloway ... are [all]blond, blue-eyed and female." Two of the three listed are brunettes.
    • SusanS  •  4 mths ago
"When we hear the term 'missing persons,' most people conjure up images of Chandra Levy, Caylee Anthony or Natalee Holloway," Wilson said. "As a result, the public is misled in believing that victims of abductions and kidnappings are [all]blond, blue-eyed and female."

The public is misled into thinking that victims are all blonde and blue-eyed, because of 2 brunettes (Chandra Levy and Caylee Anthony) and 1 blonde? Ms. Wilson might want to come up with some better examples if she wants to prove her point.

P.S. There are thousands of white women who go missing each year and can't get their cases publicized either. Not to mention men of all races as well. The sad fact is that the vast majority of missing persons cases do not generate massive media campaigns. It benefits no one to try to pretend that this is a problem that only affects black female victims.
    • Keith  •  4 mths ago
so the media is tilted toward whites victim and not blacks huh? here's 2 names Crystal Magnum (duke lacrosse FALSE rape case) and Channon Christian ( double murder ACTUAL rape case in Knoxville). Everyone nationwide and even over seas heard about the duke rape case and no one heard about what happened to Channon Christian and her boyfriend which was not only true (unlike Crystal's lies) but was extremely disgusting and horrific.

Well, I said it before and I'll say it again. I am Black but as a HUMAN, I find this just as offensive as the people who ignore us in the first place.
      -
Observations of this subject show that it is attractive white females who get the most coverage. That means that others are excluded along with Black women: people of other races, men and ugly white women.
      -
To do the RIGHT thing, the network should bring light to ALL these ignored cases, not JUST Black women. As an oppressed group, it seems that my fellow Black people would be the last to disenfranchise others.

Some of the comments I'm reading I think reflect the attitudes of our society. We think that things like this are no big deal, but it speaks to a larger issue. When was the last time you watched the news and saw a report of someone that was black, asian, hispanic, or even a short, overweight, unattractive white person that came up missing?

It would be nice if the coverage was equal across the board, but the truth is that it's not. And the same can be said for the criminal justice system. And as for the show on TV One, their coverage should be more about other groups as well, not just black women.
    • pinkpagoda  •  4 mths ago
Caylee Anthony was not blond, blue eyed, nor an adult female. She was a brunette, brown eyed baby. They must have her mixed up with Haylee Cummings who is blonde, blue eyed, and still a little girl. Who says who all look alike? Can't even keep the babies straight.

Humanity should care more about the missing.. men, women, children
