Ghana’s Derek Boateng hails Essien’s Champions League feat

midfielder Derek Boateng is optimistic that Chelsea’s Uefa Champions League feat will spur his national team-mate, Michael Essien, on to give his best in the coming season.

The Blues beat German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich on penalties to bring the cup to Stamford Bridge for the first time in the club’s history.

The Dnipro player, who is currently in Ghana to prepare for a double-header 2014 World Cup qualifier in June, hailed ‘The Bison’ for adding the winner's medal to his cabinet.

“I was happy when Chelsea won,” Boateng told Goal.com. “It is good for us that we have another Champions League player in Ghana. I’m really happy and we’re looking for more.”

Essien joins the privileged few Ghanaians of Ibrahim Tanko, Abedi Pele, Samuel Kuffour and Sulley Muntari who have won the coveted prize.

Meanwhile, Boateng has served notice that his form at club level will translate to the national team as the Black Stars prepare to encounter Lesotho and Zambia in June.

“I’m looking forward to work really hard for the team. I want to continue with my performance at club level and even do more. I enjoy playing for the national team,” he told Goal.com.
