Giant Foods recalls Farm Rich products

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Grocery chain Giant Food is recalling a number of Farm Rich snack products sold in its stores due to the risk of E. Coli bacteria contamination.

Food maker Rich Products Corp. said in March that it was recalling a number of snacks, including quesadillas, mozzarella bites and other frozen products, after an investigation found a link between an E. Coli breakout and its foods.

The Farm Rich products were distributed in retail stores nationwide. Giant Food, based in Landover, Md., did not say how many products affected by the recall were sold in its stores or where they were sold. The company operates 171 stores along the East coast.

The CDC says seven people have been hospitalized in the outbreak but none have died. E. coli was found in an open package of Farm Rich brand frozen chicken quesadillas at one ill person's home.

Giant said that customers who purchased the recalled products should discard them and bring their receipts to Giant Foods for a full refund.

E. Coli can cause stomach cramps and diarrhea. While most healthy people recover within a week, some people may develop kidney failure. That typically happens in young people and the elderly.

Giant's voluntary recall includes the following products:

-Farm Rich Mini Quesadillas Appetizers, UPC 04132235635, 18 oz. packages with sell-by dates of Jan. 1, 2013 through Sept. 29, 2014

- Farm Rich Mini Pizza Slices, UPC 04132235643, 22 oz. packages with sell-by dates of Jan. 1, 2013 through Sept. 29, 2014

- Farm Rich Mozzarella Bites, UPC 04132237443, 22 oz. packages with sell-by dates of Jan. 1, 2013 through Sept. 29, 2014
