Giants demand more from 2012 rookies

The honeymoon period is over for the Giants' Class of 2012, and general manager Jerry Reese along with head coach Tom Coughlin are looking for members of last year's draft class to step up this coming year and show that they're ready for a larger role.

Last season, the Giants played many of their draft picks sparingly as the rookies acclimated to life in the NFL, something that Reese indicated was partially by design given that the Giants drafted last in each round after winning the Super Bowl the year before.

"When you pick 32nd in the draft, you're picking down low, so a lot of the guys you're getting are developmental-type players," he said.

Running back David Wilson (first round), was primarily used as a kickoff returner before finally getting some late-season touches with the offense when injuries to Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson left the unit thin.

Receiver Rueben Randle (second) also saw his snaps increase toward the end of last year once the coaches removed him from punt return duties to allow the former LSU star to focus solely on his role in the offense.

Also contributing in spot situations were cornerback Jayron Hosley (third), and defensive tackle Markus Kuhn (seventh), who received a start on defense and was part of the defensive line's interior rotation until he suffered a season-ending ACL injury.

In addition to those players, Reese is hoping that some of the draft picks contribute, such as offensive linemen Brandon Mosley (fourth) and Matt McCants (sixth), who spent last year on injured reserve and the practice squad respectively; and tight end Adrien Robinson (fourth) whom Reese said flashed a lot in practice last year.

"I just think he needs to get out there and play," he said. "I think it's the No. 1 thing you need to do with players - put them out there and let them play. Hopefully he'll be able to get out there and play. That's what's most important for me - to get him out there."
