But in an order dated December 31, 2011, U.S. District Court Judge David Herndon, postponed that trial until further notice, and named a neutral third party, known as a special master, to oversee settlement discussions and mediations between the parties in the ligation. Attorneys for both plaintiffs and defendants were directed to meet with the special master “without delay” to negotiate in good faith. Judge Herndon's order indicated that he believes both sides in the multidistrict litigation would be best served by attempting to settle these cases rather than move forward with the first bellwether trial.

    Yaz and Yasmin Safety Issues:

    Yaz and Yasmin contain drospirenone, a synthetic form of the hormone progestin.


    According to a study released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 27, 2011, birth control pills that contain drospirenone increase the risk of blood clots by almost 74%, compared to other oral contraceptives that are made with an older form of progestin.

    In December 2011, during a joint meeting of the FDA’s Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and its Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee, a majority of outside medical experts recommended that labels for Yaz, Yasmin and similar pills be updated with stronger warnings about their possible potential to cause serious, life threatening blood clots. According to The New York Times, the committee voted 15-11 that Yaz and Yasmin be allowed to remain on the market, despite the concerns over blood clots.
