Gingrich faces tough questions at black church

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich faced tough questions Saturday about his past statements on race and class, making a rare appearance by a Republican primary candidate before a black church — an audience unlikely to vote in South Carolina's Jan. 21 contest.

Standing behind the lectern at Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Gingrich was peppered with questions about his assertion that poor children lack work ethic and his criticism of President Barack Obama as a "food-stamp president."

Gingrich may get credit for spending nearly an hour in front of a largely unsupportive crowd. But the event is unlikely to help him win many votes in South Carolina's primary, a contest Gingrich himself has said will be make-or-break for his campaign.

Blacks made up just 2 percent of those who voted in South Carolina's 2008 Republican primary, according to exit polls.

While the give and take between Gingrich and more than 50 people in the audience was largely respectful, some in the crowd had sharp questions for the former House Speaker. Many centered on Gingrich's remark last month that poor children as young as nine should work at least part time cleaning their schools in order to learn about work.

Gingrich said his comments were misconstrued.

"What I was saying was, in the poorest neighborhoods, if we can find a way to help young people earn some money, we might actually be able to keep the dropout rate down and give people an incentive to come to school," he said.

The explanation little satisfied some in the crowd, including a woman who said Gingrich's words came across "so negatively, like we're not doing everything for our young people."

Gingrich was also asked if he stood by his assertion that Obama is a "food stamp president", a line the Georgia Republican uses often during stump speeches. He responded with a simple, "Yes."

Gingrich is grasping for campaign life in South Carolina after disappointing fourth place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire. Success for Gingrich in the South's first primary will depend largely on his ability to draw support from the state's conservative and evangelical voters.

That made Saturday's appearance at a black church all the more head-scratching, particularly because it was Gingrich's only public appearance of the day in South Carolina.

But Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said the appearance was a good use of the candidate's time.

"If you're going to lead America, you have to be willing to lead all of America," he said.

The often-combative Gingrich did try to strike a conciliatory tone at times, promising "a very serious outreach to Democrats" in Washington if he were elected president. And he said the forum was appropriately being held around the holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

"This would be what he would have liked," Gingrich said of the late civil rights leader.

Following the question and answer session, church members prayed over Gingrich and his wife, Callista. The couple then joined the crowd in the church basement for dinner.

There are poor people who work for a living...they still qualify as "poor" based on the fact that they don't make enough to be called middle class.
      • whataboutit 4 mths ago
Middle class end at 100k and starts at 30k. fewer and fewer people are ever seeing the top numbers. 100k in NY is not the same as 100k in Omaha where you can still get a very nice home with a lot of land for under 100k. So imagine what 30k is like for folks in NY

tellyouwhat you only make what you want to make look for a job that will pay more or get another part-time job to do better for yourself. If you work only 40 hours it won't hurt to seek other revenues.

Bobby has a slim understanding of economics. At any given moment there are a finite number of jobs, and they are distributed across a broad spectrum. Not everybody can be a brain surgeon and the economy does not allow everyone "to do better for yourself". Since the economy doesn't allow that, not everybody (in fact few) can simply work harder and do better. "You only make what you want to make" is simplistic to the point of meaninglessness.

white/ black/rich/poor/ gay rights/ abortion rights this or that. as long as our gov and media keeps us divided they have won. keep us arguing amongst ourselves prevents us from having a unified front and seeing the truth about what our government is doing to this country. divide and conquer is the oldest military tactic in the book and the american public has fallen for it.
      • mighty m 4 mths ago
it is NOT the media keeping us divided...the media reaports..the politicans say...so fi you hate the divison talk to the politicians
      • Tom 4 mths ago
we're divided because the right wing is there to divide. Just like they tried to secede from the union in the civil war. Just like they divided the phrase "one nation indivisible.." with the "under god" horse crap in the fifties. just like the racist democrats became the "dixiecrats" under Strom Thurmond. I'd go on and on, but I don't feel like it right now.

Read an interesting book by one of Reagan's staff.. I can't remember the name of the author off hand.. it's called "The Cousin's War" and it's about the theory that we're just continuing to act out the original issues of the English Civil War. "conservatives" on one side, "liberals" on the other. It's a fascinating read.

Food stamps is a good program. The problem being it is taken advantage of. I worked all my life, a single Mother, had to take them 1 time in 5o yrs of work for only 2 months until I got back to work. This is what it is for, not to be a way of life
      • Chris t 4 mths ago
i agree.. but the problem with social programs... is ... once a person/group realizes they can gain power, in the form of votes, by handing out that money... its a never ending cycle!!!
      • Joseph p. 4 mths ago
A lot of people i knew in Alabama were on food stamps. They would openly admit to selling/trading them to buy alcohol and tobacco. Obviously,so many people are doing it theres no shame anymore. You're right Shirley, there are situations where food stamps are a lifesaver, but there are way too many people using them as a source of income at taxpayer expense!

We knock Newt who makes his money selling books and being an advisor in the private sector.
Yet we fail to knock on our rich senators doors and ask them why they got so rich.
Making money on the side while on the taxpayers dime should be exposed and frowned on publicly.
Why is 44 percent of congress rich millionaires?
      Questions we should be asking...

Why are 80% of lawmakers lawyers? Are lawyers not members of the Judiciary and should not be allowed to participate in the Legislative? Do you believe that lawyer lawmakers not take care of their Judiciary associates and make laws in their favor? Why is their not TORT REFORM?

I'm not trying to speak for Gingrich and do not support him but if he had broadened his statement to include having all students work around school I might be with him on that issue. We visited our sister city Kanayama, Japan several years ago and found that all students did some sort of work in the school. It was felt that not only did it help with the work ethic the students formed a stronger bond with the school and other students.

Im a white man who was raise by a single mother with a brother and three sisters and received government help via food stamps. We lived in poor neighborhoods and I received free lunches at school, which I was embarrassed to accept. Not to disrespect my mother because she did the absolute best with what she had, but I wanted to do better for myself. I was the only one of five children to graduate from high school. I went on to get a degree in college (which I paid for myself). While I am in no way rich, I make approximately 60K a year and own my own home. Im tired of hearing the excuse's of and seeing people that put the blame on everybody but themselves for how their lives have turned out. I could have done nothing with my life and ended up in prison or on drugs like the rest of my siblings, but I wanted something better.

Bottom line! The truth hurts! Its just that most people dont want to hear it if it reflects poorly on them. I am not singling out any particular race or ethnicity because this is true for everyone.

I never thought kids should not learn the ethics of a good hard work. I do not see any kid mowing lawns or washing windows cars to make extra money today. Most are interested in sitting in front of the TV and playing their latest video war game to see how many people they can kill. Kids today have become LAZY
I was 12 years sitting on a tractor preparing the field for spring planting, NEVER KILLED ME. Is it a reason with my work ethics taught by my father making anything more then 6 figures is not a problem for me. Have no time to focus on TV media and sports. But I do have time to travel the world. I do not make money watching American Idol and the cooking channel. or sitting in a bar drinking fancy beer.
NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING. GET AN EDUCATION AND WORK HARD.

Playing the race card by anyone is getting old no matter what color hey maybe.... How about voting for someone who can fix this mess that will benefit all.....

Lets face it. A person raised in an upper class neighborhood, never exposed to inner cities, is going to have misconceptions and fears about the people in the city. A person raised in an inner city, never exposed to wealthy suburbs, is going to have misconceptions and fears about the wealthy. Fear turns to hate and the groups move further apart.

God, guns, gays, race, & abortion: the only issues the media and both political parties want Americans to concentrate on. Ignore the exploding debt, high unemployment, and America's eroding economic and political influence in the world.
