Gingrich: 'I'm Going to Be the Nominee'

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA — A very confident New Gingrich asserted to ABC News Thursday afternoon that he will be the Republican presidential nominee.

“I’m going to be the nominee,” the former Speaker told ABC News. “It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee.”

The bold assertion came after Gingrich refused to criticize the Republican challengers who have begun attacking him and his record.

TAPPER: “How do you respond to Republicans who say if you don’t draw distinctions with Mitt Romney and others who are attacking you, if you don’t point out their perceived vulnerabilities, Barack Obama and the Democrats sure aren’t going to share that same reluctance and you are doing Obama a favor by staying positive?”

GINGRICH: “They are not going to be the nominee. I don’t have to go around and point out the inconsistencies of people who are not going to be the nominee. They are not going to be the nominee.”

TAPPER: “You are going to be the nominee?”

GINGRICH: “I’m going to be the nominee. It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee. And by the way I don’t object if people want to attack me, that’s their right. All I’m suggesting that it’s not going to be very effective and that people are going to get sick of it very fast. And the guys who attacked each other in the debates up to now, every single one of them have lost ground by attacking. So they should do what they and their consultants want to do. I will focus on being substantive and I will focus on Barack Obama.”

Okay Cons, let's hear it. Tell us why Newt would make a good President and spare us the lame, "He's not Obama" lines. Give us something concrete.

Wait until the Newt/ Obama debate. Your cup will runneth over of reasons after you see them head to head.. or maybe I should say teleprompter to head.

First off Newt is no conservative. Second, I think America cand do better than Newt. I dunno how people can vote for this guy. They are definatley going to be on the dark side of history. I Am voting for the only one who makes any sense and has never flip floped(okay, okay he changed his mind on the death penalty because he realized our judicial system is faulty, but can you blame him on that one?)

Oh yeah? Funny thing is that I've seen just a very few comments here supporting Newt. How can that be?

What you are saying is absolutely unfair and absurd. I for one have something positive to say. think that Newt has nice hair for a lying fat slob.
      • Robert 5 mths ago
That's because his supporters have are competent, and don't have the need to get on Yahoo blogs and call people names like you!

I wonder how many of these one-line-wonders have watched the debates? Don't see much substantive in the posts. Gingrich has demonstrated statesmanship, extensive knowledge of the issues, and resilience. He will be able to hold his own in his debates with Obama. I think he is brilliant in planning to follow Obama on every campaign stop to set the record straight. Oh, and for you twenty-somethings: life isn't easy. We do make mistakes--even public ones. We have the opportunity to learn from those mistakes and grow. Gingrich is not a demi-god. He doesn't present himself as such. He is a human being-a smart, conservative, capable human being who will lead our Congress out of gridlock and our country in a better direction. Four more years of the current chaos and we will look like Greece. For those of you who think there is a perpetual money tree: quit drinking the Kool-Aid.

Only a Republican would reject someone for cheating on his wife (Cain) to embrace someone who cheated on his wife (Gingrich).
      • Pooky,S 5 mths ago
Two of his wives, actually. Apparently the problem with Cain is that he didn't do it enough times.
      • That Guy 5 mths ago
Of the two, I'd say Gingrich is far more qualified. Cain would be great if he knew a single thing about politics. A retired businessman does not a politician make.

It would be nice to have someone who knew a single thing about justice.

It's not just Newt: The two-party system no longer seems capable of offering American voters candidates they can support. Something's gotta give.

It is just Newt that has numerous ethics violations that the GOP just doesn't seem to care about like they did with Clinton who didn't add up to squat compared to dirty Newt!

Newt, the chickenhawk who married his first wife ( his teacher ) to avoid Vietnam,. Newt, who had at least 3 affairs while married, Newt who walked out on his wife and 2 children because " she isnt young enough or pretty enough to be a presidents wife " and pressed her for a divorce while she was in the hospital recovering from exploratory surgery for a benign cancer tumor, his wife had to sue for child support for his 2 daughters, Newt who wrote 22 bad checks during the Congressional Banking Scandal, Newt who received $4,5 million from Harper Collins Publishing , owned by Ruport Murdoch, then met with R.M. to help him with regulatory problems, Newt who used Taxpayers dollars and Congressional office equipment to write the manuscript in his district office, Newt who was fined $300,000 for stealing money from Taxpayer funded Charities for personal use, Newt the only Speaker of the House who was reprimanded for ethics violations and resigned in disgrace, Newt who wants to do away with Child Labor Laws so your children can become janitors in schools and take away American workers positions, Newt who wants AMNESTY for illegals so Corporations can hire cheap labor while denying Americans jobs. This man is a perfect example of EVERYTHING that is wrong with American Politics. A real piece of excrement.

After reading through the first 300 or so comments, I have only seen support for Obama and Ron Paul... a few retard comments for Newt, but more or less it looks like the "people's" choice is Obama VS Ron Paul... If the diehards that really hate Obama want him out, then you better start supporting Paul or we will have 4 more years with Obama!!!

      Ron Paul 2012 or BUST!
