Gingrich slams rivals for backing out of debate

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — Newt Gingrich slammed his Republican rivals Friday for refusing to appear in a nationally televised debate from his home state of Georgia, a state the former House speaker has made central to his strategy of getting his struggling presidential bid back on track.

Gingrich made his remarks at a rally in the congressional district he represented for 20 years, speaking to a few hundred supporters. He planned several campaign stops across Georgia on Saturday with Herman Cain, a fellow Georgian and former contender for the GOP nomination who has since endorsed Gingrich.

CNN was forced to cancel the debate, scheduled to take place in Atlanta on March 1, after Mitt Romney declined to participate. Rick Santorum quickly followed suit.

The cancellation was a blow to Gingrich, who is banking on a strong showing on Super Tuesday, March 6, in Georgia, Ohio and eight other states holding contests that day.

"The average Georgian is going to say, the average Ohioan is going to say, 'Let me get this straight. They won't come here to debate but they want my vote?'" Gingrich said, adding, "Anybody who's afraid of debating Newt Gingrich isn't going to be in very good shape to debate Barack Obama."

Gingrich, whose sole win came in South Carolina's primary Jan. 21, conceded winning Georgia was "crucial" to sustaining his presidential bid. His candidacy has struggled since Romney soundly beat him in Florida Jan. 31 and Santorum won contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Feb. 7.

Gingrich also criticized ads run by a super PAC supporting Romney's candidacy.

The ads by Restore Our Future, which is run by former Romney advisers, have been harshly critical of Gingrich and the millions the group spent on the ads contributed to his defeat in Florida and Iowa. Restore Our Future is currently running ads in Michigan and Arizona, which hold primaries Feb. 28, as well as several Super Tuesday states.

"You can't hide behind millions of dollars in negative ads and think you're going to win the presidency," Gingrich said. "I think there is a declining impact of totally false ads, and I think you're going to see as Romney applies the same technique at Santorum, a general revulsion against this kind of purely negative campaigning."

Gingrich's campaign website posted a letter Friday from attorney Patrick Milsaps to Georgia television stations warning of potential liability if they aired Restore Our Future ads claiming Gingrich had favored legislation endorsing China's one-child policy. The group has run ads in several states suggesting Gingrich partnered with Democrat Nancy Pelosi to support legislation favoring such a policy, which has been discredited by several independent political fact checking organizations.

        The Great Lie
It was so easy back then- during the 1950s and early 60s-to be a Right thinking Citizen of the United States. Easy because we all knew who wore the White hats (yeaaa!) and who wore the black ones (Boooo!).
“Capitalism”- which we naively defined as equal parts Free enterprise, democracy and the Winning of the West was Good. “Communism”- which was anything associated with Russia or Red China- was bad.
And “they” wanted to get “us”. And, despite the fact that God was on our side, they’d do it if we didn’t somehow “keep ahead”. (The day and night fear of the Right thinking Americans throughout the 50s and early 60s was that the United States would fall behind in some nebulas and unspecified contest and quickly suffer a very concrete- though undefined fate: The Communists will come in here and take over”).
And so ‘progress’, which was already as’ American’ as mom, flag and apple pie- became our secret weapon. Our be-all, end-all, (“Your future is great in growing America”), “New” and “improved” were good…while conservation and “little old bird watchers in tennis shoes”, were bad.
And one of the reasons we knew these “truths” was because Big Business and Big government hired some very clever and talented people to convince us that we knew them.

If politics wasn't about being #1 in the country, politicians would help EVERYONE out not just people that feel the same way as them.

Repubs have no shame. If they did, they most certainly would have prevented all of these cartoon candidates from taking center stage.

Here's the deal -- being a Liberal doesn't make you un-American, being Conservative doesn't make you hateful. We need checks and balances, if we were all the same then the end of the pendulum-swing would not make things better. We need to be different. It doesn't make you un-American, it doesn't make you not supportive of our troops or the Constitution, it doesn't make you someone who doesn't care about people who have less than you and it doesn't make you someone who approves of corporate greed. We are different - that's why we are called the "Melting Pot." If we could for just one day not be satisfied with chastising those on the "wrong team" and admit that both sides have some good ideas we could be oh so much better. It's not our rigidity that identifies us - it's our resilience. It's our tenacity. It's our willingness to overcome adversity. That is what makes us Americans. We are not robots who agree on everything. We #$%$ and fight and relinquish and demand and in the end we come to an agreement that meets not everyone's wants but meets most of the needs of all. That's what we are, Americans. A family that at times doesn't want to sit at the Thanksgiving table with our relatives but when push comes to shove will defend them 'til the end. The most un-Patriotic thing you can do today is to say to another American: "You are not a true American because..." We are better than that. We have worked harder and lost too many lives for that. Whether it's a man buried in concrete in the Empire State Building or another trapped forever in the Arizona we have sacrificed too much to be petty and we owe more than that to those who have given so much to afford us the opportunity to live in the greatest country in the world. The days of the "Sunshine Soldier" are over. It's not enough to wave the flag and proclaim your place as an American. You have been afforded the opportunities of this great country which have been forged in the blood of our forefathers. You have a responsibility to this Nation to love, honor and serve and promote life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans...

The 2012 Primary has dome so much damage to the credibility of the Republican Party that the GOP is completely irrelevant. The real question is, can the GOP survive? Will the Socialist Party replace the GOP in 2016?
