Gingrich's NAACP, Food Stamp Remarks Stir Controversy

Manchester, N.H.- The blogosphere piled up with headlines Thursday over a part of Newt Gingrich's campaign speech involving food stamps and the NAACP, which left the Gingrich campaign scrambling in defense to put Gingrich's comments in context.

"And so I'm prepared if the NAACP invites me, I'll go to their convention and talk about why the African American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps," Gingrich said earlier today in Plymouth, N.H.

After a few tweets about Gingrich's comments surfaced online, several blogs were written focusing on Gingrich's comments. Some headlines included "Gingrich Singles Out Blacks in Food Stamp Remark," "Newt: Informs African Americans They Should Not Want Food Stamps," and "Gingrich to Blacks: Demand Jobs Not Food Stamps."

The Internet chatter ensued as writers discussed Gingrich's comments on race, saying he "called out the African American community."

Gingrich lead welfare reform as Speaker of the House in the early 90's and routinely speaks on improving poverty in America as a part of his "stump" speech. Though his comments are not always politically-correct or well received by some groups, Gingrich doesn't hold back in talking about his desire to help ethnic communities.

A portion of Gingrich's usual speech given to crowds includes a line in which Gingrich says more people are on food stamps under President Obama than with any other president. ABC News fact checked Gingrich's food stamp claims earlier this month, confirming that Americans on food stamps is at a record high, but mostly attributed to a weak economy.

"The fact is if I become your nominee we will make the key test very simple - food stamps versus paychecks. Obama is the best food stamp president in American history. More people are on food stamps today because of Obama's policies than ever in history," Gingrich said. "I would like to be the best paycheck president in American history."

Gingrich stirred controversy last month over his comments about poor children having no work habits or people around them to teach them how to work. Gingrich offered the solution that some school janitors should be fired and children should work part time within their school for money and to develop "pride in their community."

The Gingrich campaign immediately responded to the press over Gingrich's comments by sending out an email that said Gingrich's NAACP comments were an effort to reach out to the African American community. The Gingrich campaign pointed to Gingrich's book Real Change, in which Gingrich was critical of President Bush's "failure to address the NAACP." Gingrich said it was a "clear signal to the African American community that Republicans did not see them as worthy of engagement in dialogue."

Gingrich also chastised the 2008 Republican presidential candidates, in an appearance on Good Morning America, for skipping out on a forum hosted by Travis Smiley, which focused on the issues of black voters. Mike Huckabee was the only candidate to agree.

Gingrich said earlier this week that he was prepared to go into any ethnic community that would listen to his ideas.

"There's no neighborhood I know of in America where if you went around and asked people, 'Would you rather your children had food stamps or paychecks?" Gingrich said. "You would end up with a majority saying they'd rather have a paycheck."

Kudos to Newt for laying it on the line. The only item I would disagree with is he should of called out the NAACP for the racist and vitriolic organization it truly is. A quick look at its agenda and motive one has to conclude its purely an organization which divides races and promotes hate. There is truly no difference between the NAACP and the KKK except for the color of ones skin.

no food stamps for you if you are overweight! recipients should weigh-in at the scales every month. if one earns too much money to qualify for food stamps, then being too fat should disqualify you as well. you're welcome

I had to write about this in my AP Government class. Just basically what the article is about and my comments. Feel free to comment. I'm open to all opinions!
Newt Gingrich’s comments “are not always politically-correct or well received by some groups”. The use of Gingrich’s direct words in the article entails a prime example of why the statement above is completely accurate. Gingrich mentions, "[…] the African American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps”, which is a statement that clearly needs further explanation. By the reaction of many news reporters and individuals over social networking sites, it seems obvious that Gingrich’s intentions weren’t properly expressed. Or were they? Titles mentioned in this article, such as "Gingrich Singles Out Blacks in Food Stamp Remark," or "Newt: Informs African Americans They Should Not Want Food Stamps,” displays Gingrich’s comment as being an insult in which directly targets the African American community. Many times the media twists and exaggerate statements, especially ones made by political campaigners. However, it’s definitely not hard to see where these perspectives came from considering “the African American community” is specifically pin pointed in Gingrich’s comment.
A previous comment made by Gingrich in reference to poor children and their work ethic really doesn’t help his popularity as a candidate either. “[…] janitors should be fired and children should work part time within their school for money and to develop "pride in their community."” Wouldn’t that just put more individuals in a financial strain which could potentially lead to those same individuals needing the assistance of food stamps? This idea being a product of , not just a single man, but a congregation who criticizes the current administration over the lack of employment opportunities and the increase in Americans dependency on government assistance such as food stamps. Overall, though there may be some truth behind Gingrich’s words, he should definitely invest in a personal translator in order to allow his beliefs to be presented more appropriately.

Newt's god is money. And he has been selling his soul to it for years, at our expense with his NAFTA, PNTR for communist China, and WTO which destroyed tens of millions of manufacturing & associated jobs

I dont think its racist to tell people we should be helping them help themselves. Actually thats kind of the opposite of racists. Usually racist people dont want to help the race they supposedly hate!!! So peoples comments about racism are the typical liberal reaction when they dont have anything of substance to say!! Grow up and get a clue!!!!
      • Mike 26 days ago
EXACTLY!!!! The NAACP reeks of racism. They could care less about the welfare of a race or culture. They are soley there to promote class and race war which they have excelled at. Truly, if you look at what this organization has promoted and encouraged the
ONLY difference between them and the KKK is the color of their skin.

If you're going to end handouts, end ALL of them, including political donations and lobby "gifts."
      • Sarah Blue 4 mths ago
Sshhhhhhh... don't mention that! We silly Americans have been programmed to hate welfare and other "handouts" for the poor, but we can't question WEALTHFARE (tax breaks and loopholes for big banks and corporations) and the handouts the Freddie and Fannie received while giving their top execs BONUSES.

Food stamps should be for the temporary down and out situation, not a meal ticket for the rest of your life... Black, White, Red, or Yellow.

What outrages me about ignorant people is they always generalize. I am black. Never has anyone in my family (3+ generations back) been on food stamps. With that said, I am not attacking those who are. However, i do think they should be used within a term (1-2 yrs.). I have a huge problem with those who receive various federal aides (welfare, subsidized living, discounted utilities, Christmas presents galore, etc.) These people OF ALL RACES abuse what is intended to help those in a temporary situation. STATEMENT LIKE THE ONES MENTIONED ARE EXTREMELY RACIALLY MOTIVATED!
      • 3thingsuneed 4 mths ago
`1 in 4 are on food stamps, black, white, asian etc....even though this is from Dec/2010 stat.. I'm sure it is still close. I do not like Gingrich at all. It would get the "dunce" hat as a President.....
      • Andrew 4 mths ago
What if you're permanently on the downside? People just don't hop out of poverty that easy.

Lets be real...a job and a paycheck is always better than welfare and food stamps.
      • Jackie 4 mths ago
thats true but why are those things always equated to blacks?
      • Dwight 4 mths ago
Jackie, because that is who the NAACP consists of.

IF you can AFFORD groceries/basic staples with your paycheck !! My family has to choose between healthcare OR groceries...but if I QUIT my job we could have both.
Yet I have work ethic. Families like us that do work but make $1 over the food stamp cutoffs..we are the ones falling thru the cracks. Yet the folks on food stamps get $400 of fancy groceries..and a fine car to drive to boot. Someone is not being on the up and up !!
I think food stamps system should be like WIC. You can only buy certain foods / basic staples at the store only..not junk food or filet migon. IF I had to use such system and had basic meats/ grains/beans/produce my family could SURVIVE on I would be grateful.

I want a candidate who will vow, promise whatever to BRING JOBS BACK TO AMERICA and screw NAFTA and all those other acronyms that have bled our jobs away. I for one redfuse to buy anything made by GE because of their constant culture of shipping jobs to China and elsewhere off shore. As Americans we MUST start to punish these corporations by refusing tobuy their products. Incremental improvement by boycottting these companies will send a message.

As an African American male I strongly agree. I don't want a handout or take a risk doing something illegal to feed my family. I want an opportunity to be able to work and take care of my family like any man would want. Politicians and big American businesses have shipped many jobs out of this country, forgetting the many Americans here that used those jobs to pay mortgages and tuitions and taxes and never ever wanted food stamps or unemploment benefits. CREATE JOBS IN AMERICA, AMERICANS ARE NOT LAZY, THEY HAVE BECOME VICTIMS OF CORPERATE AND POLITICAL GREED. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Working instead of depending on food stamps and other welfare that is paid for by other indivduals should be applied to ALL individuals.

The only people that should be on welfare and food stamps for long periods are people that cannot work due to a physical or mental disability.

THANK GOD this has not turned into a forum about black vs. white. There are some really good truths to this article posted. It just shows that mature people can have an open discussion without it being about hate. Thank you!
