Kate Middleton and Prince William Introduce Baby Girl
Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a baby girl early Saturday, setting off a frenzy of media coverage on the arrival of royal baby No. 2.
Kate Middleton and Prince William later introduced the baby to an enthusiastic crowd outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London.
According to BBC News, Middleton gave birth at about 3:34 a.m. ET to a girl weighing 8 pounds and 3 ounces. Prince William was present for the delivery. The baby’s older brother, George, was born in the same hospital on July 22, 2013.
In a statement, Kensington Palace said: “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”
Large crowds have gathered outside Buckingham Palace to snap pictures of the formal announcement of the royal arrival on a golden easel, which will stay up outside the palace for 24 hours, according to BBC News. The baby is Queen Elizabeth’s fifth great-grandchild. She is fourth in line to the throne in the British monarchy.
President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama issued the following statement later on Saturday congratulating the family: “Michelle and I are delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family, and all the people of the United Kingdom on the birth of the Royal Princess. On behalf of the American people, we wish the Duke and Duchess and their son George much joy and happiness on the occasion of the arrival of the newest member of their family.”
The royal birth made headlines around the world and will be the subject of much more coverage by the BBC and others this weekend.
