Girl Posted on Facebook During 7-Hour Welfare-Office Standoff

A 12-year-old girl whose mother shot and critically wounded her before killing herself made several cryptic posts on Facebook during a nearly seven-hour hostage ordeal at the Texas Department of Health and Human Services office in Laredo.

"May die 2day," Ramie Marie Grimmer wrote on Facebook at 7:50 p.m. during the Monday night standoff.

"i'm here for you guys. No reason to be afraid," Nancy Harrop, who the girl listed as her grandmother, replied.

"Im bored," came at 10:34 p.m.

    Eighteen minutes later: "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhh."

And finally, at 11:28 p.m.: "tear gas ..."

Rachelle Grimmer, 38, pulled a gun on the welfare office supervisor, Roberto Reyes, and her two children out of her frustration at being denied food stamps. The office's other employees were able to safely evacuate the building, according to the San Antonio Express.

A SWAT team surrounded the building, and officers communicated with Grimmer throughout the ordeal.

But at midnight -- shortly after Grimmer hung up on police -- three shots were fired, causing the police to storm the building.

Rachelle Grimmer was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ramie and her brother, Timothy, 10, suffered critical head wounds and were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio, according to the San Antonio Express.

Grimmer's outburst was reportedly triggered after years of getting rejected for state assistance in various states, the newspaper reported. The family had recently moved to Texas from Ohio.

Stephanie Goodman, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, told ABCNews.com that Grimmer hadn't been rejected. She had just received a notice that her case was closed, since she did not provide all of the necessary documentation during the department's 30-day time frame.

"She absolutely could have applied again," Goodman said.

Neighbors said the Grimmers lived in a trailer about 6½ feet wide and 16 feet long.

"The children went barefoot to accompany her. They went four times, and four times she was denied. She was desperate, because she had nothing to feed her children," neighbor Oscar Luis Cuellar told the Laredo Sun. Goodman said employees at the Laredo office were struggling to cope in the aftermath of the shooting.

"They're very badly shaken. They go into this business because they want to help people," she said. "Even though it was processed according to our procedures, it does not comfort them at all."

Ok. So many responses. Some make sense and put the responsibility exactly where it should lie, others haven't a clue. It's quite simple really. She wanted something for free--albeit, per policy/law she was eligible and presumably entitled to it and, I believe, rightfully so--that's what such programs are for. All she had to do was provide verifications. Simple. If it were me and my kids were hungry, those verification would have been turned back in hours after they were first requested. Then she could have rested easy for perhaps a whole year worth of free food supplements (until her yearly redetermination which would just as minimally effortlessly required verifications again) and she could have spent all that free time looking on ways to be a more proper mother and citizen than she showed that selfish day she made national news. What more need be said? May her children heal, and grow, and someday know that it was a selfish irresponsible thing she did that day and no one's fault but her own. Then maybe, just maybe, we may gain two more fully grown citizens who accept responsibility for their own lives. Lord knows we need as many as we can get. Amen.

I do not agree whatsoever with what this woman did, but I do not agree with these departments procedures in what makes a person able to qualify for foodstamps. In high school my dad died and we went from having his 3000 a month income to just my mom's 1300. We coud not afford anything. We stopped paying for our house, we ended up having our water, heat, and electricity cut off all in the middle of winter until we paid those bills. We struggled trying to find a buyer for our home so we could move to an affordable apartment. 2 months before my fathers death he for some reason cancelled his life insurance. We went from comfortable to everything but. Those places would qualify us for any sort of food stamps program because we "made too much money" they said "sell your house" and we were trying to. Even in an afforadable apartment my mom and I would have struggled to make ends meet. I remember weeks where the only meal I ate was my free school lunch which I had qualified for after my father's death. And that was torchure when winter break started, especially coming home to a cold house, 50 degrees on the inside. Thank God I am in college now. I just hope I never have to through this as my mom did, it was hard and still is.

How on earth could you not afford anything with 1300 a month? maybe your family just has bad budgeting to blame... I sit here with wireless internet, a formula fed baby, rent paid, electric paid, tons of food, no foodstamps... Confused.

At the moment it was because we had to figure out what the priorities were and what to cancel. we figured that out quickly. We lived in a home of course, with a home we did not have rent. I know some apartments buildings your hot water or heat or some type of utilities are "free", figured into rent or something. At the time we had to replace our hot water heater which wasn't a super expensive thing but it was I think 700 with installation and all. We had to pay all the expensives for my father's funeral minus life insurance. it's zo ridiculously expensive. who knew it'd cost so much just to open a hole in the ground! So there was mortgage, phones, internet+tv (cancelled the tv), electricity, gas company, gas for the cars, groceries, a second mortgage my dad took out for something, then other purchases like toiletries for which we switched to the dollar stor brands for some. I say we couldn't afford anything cause my mom was so terrified of losing the house she lived in for most of her marriage, the one I grew up in, that she believed in paying that above all and when we paid that mortgage we had 0 left. That's how we could not afford anything with 1300 dollars. I believe that in general surviving on 1300 is doable but with the cost of our bills it was pretty unrealistic.

If I couldn't get a job or food stamps and my children were starving, i'm going to resort to begging or stealing food to feed them. Not Shooting them in the head.

We think a like my shadowy friend..... Rob the robber barons and give to the poor!
      • Teria 5 mths ago
And then end up in jail I presume....she should have followed procedures and read...That's what the problem is most people do not want to take the time to read the fine print...While the daughter was posting on fb she should have been explaining to her mother what needed to be done in order to receive the food stamps....Sad situation...The other thing is we live in 2011 but do you notice how everything and I mean everything resorts back to the color thing...It's incredible...

Why? So they can kill themselves later? Being a survivor doesn't magically make food appear.

But she could afford a smart phone and a gun....welcome to the States
      • Kerri 5 mths ago
So easy to jump to conclusions without all the facts, isn't it? Perhaps the gun was borrowed? Or purchased when she was better off financially? Who knows? So easy to judge when ones life is perfect, isn't it?

Not matter how desparate things get, NO ONE has the right to take there childs life, what possesed her to believe that her children will never survive without her? and now not only is she not there but will leave them with life long physical and emotional scars.

its really sad our soldiers cant get help a struggling mother cant get help but you can bet the illegals get help along with the foreign countries we send millions too and the lazy A$$E$ that sit and do nothing but deteriate the system

Obviously, this woman was fighting emotional issues that go beyond her financial troubles. That said, I was struck by the fact that, despite being unable to feed her children, she was able to afford (what I assume was) a smartphone with internet inorder for her daughter to post on Facebook throughout the ordeal. Another example of mismanaged expenses by those who claim poverty.

In the end, I pray her children are able to recover physically, emotionally, and socio-economically from this tragidy. They have a lot of obsticales to overcome.

Let me get this straight...The mother could afford a cell phone w/ internet access for her 12 year old, but has no money for food? Well at least we know her priorities. This is what is wrong w/ America today!
    • mari  •  5 mths ago
Wow, 3 human beings are dead and people are still fixated on the facebook posting. I was thinking about buying a cell phone. I have never had one. I have read that you can get a TracPhone for about $10 and keep it up for less than $10 a month.

Somebody posted that the Obama phone has facebook capabilities.

Try feeding a family of 3 all month on $10. Geez, no wonder the lady lost hope and snapped.

Somebody posted on another site that if you don't pay your phone bill on net10, the messages will still go in voice mail but you can't access them from the phone and maybe that's what happened. Who knows. That might be why she didn't get her messages. Maybe they lost their cell phone service?

StraightTalk from walmart offers unlimited internet access for less than $50 a month.

Sure it would be better to buy food but they are phasing out pay phones. If she had cut through all the red tape she might have been able to get more than $300 a month in food stamps.

Some of you make me sick. You think poor people should have no human rights and live in a cave with no contact to outside world. You want a world were only rich people can use a phone. Get a life!

Sadly this is what took place but its totally
avoidable. The gooberment acts like its there money. It comes from the taxpayer and not some agent or welfare staffer

No family should go hungry! Somebody failed these people! Shame on them!
Hell awaits them I am afraid! People, be alert to see hardships in families and help them! Or send them where they can get help! Thank God there are many good people out there willing to help needy families! Merry Christmas!
    • mari  •  5 mths ago
It just occurred to me that many of the comments about the facebook posting may be from welfare workers who want people to forget that somehow this family fell through the cracks.

At one point they were living in a tent. How does a family living in a tent walking around barefoot fall through the cracks?

Their RV trailer was only about 6½ feet wide and 16 feet long.

This country does not treat all the poor equally. Why are some families able to get a $1,500 a month section 8 voucher but this family couldn't even get somebody to help fill out forms and documentation they needed to get food stamps?

What a #!@^%. Take your own life if you want, but don't shoot the kids. What a selfish, uncaring #!@^%.

I don't know how some of you can live with yourselves. If u are not in her position be grateful, desperation will drive people to do crazy things. Wifi is free in many places and there is a program that provides cellular service to the poor. Don't be so quick to judge what u do not understand.
    • Matt  •  5 mths ago
So she couldn't afford to buy food for her kids but could afford to buy a gun and ammo!!
