The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline fell 4 cents over the weekend to $3.25, a low for the year. The price is still about a penny more than at this time last year.

Here is some more information as the Christmas holiday travel season kicks into high gear:

SO FAR THIS MONTH:

The national average price for gasoline has dropped every day in December, AAA says. The decline has totaled 15.4 cents, or 4.5 percent. The average on Christmas Day in 2011 was $3.23. Keep in mind that the price rose during the week after Christmas in each of the three previous years.

CRACKING $3:

Missouri's average dropped below $3 a gallon on Saturday, the first time since July 7 that the average price in any state was below $3. Oklahoma is at $3.02 and South Carolina is at $3.03.

REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT:

Drivers in New England are paying more than the national average for gas, but should still welcome the recent declines. Drivers in Connecticut and Massachusetts have gotten a break of about 17 cents in the past month. New Hampshire is the region's cheapest state at $3.37 a gallon.
