The Glass Ceiling in Hindsight: Women From Top Law Firms Look Back

Takepart.com

What would you think of things you said about your future when you were just getting started in life?

This video from The New York Times captures some age-wisened responses to the unfettered idealism of bright, young female lawyers who had just landed jobs at a leading firm in New York.

The 21 women profiled were asked to talk about the gender gap and their futures—and most had exceedingly sunny outlooks 12 years ago.

But time has told a different tale.

Some seem wistful as they look back on time spent away from their kids as they chased their careers. One says it took the lens of hindsight to realize how much a more diverse workplace could have inspired her. The story elaborates:

From the original 21, around half are in private practice, some are in powerful positions at corporations, others are working in public interest law and several became full-time parents. But what I found most interesting was that their lives were often far more complex than they had predicted. Even the greatest of expectations, it seems, eventually encounter reality.
