‘Glee’s Darren Criss On Writing “This Time”, Rachel Berry’s Swan Song – Emmys

EXCLUSIVE: Darren Criss, star of Fox’s beloved musical comedy Glee, not only showcased his singing talents, but also his songwriting skills during his tenure on the show. He wrote the music and lyrics to the song “This Time,” his second song on Glee, which is being considered for an Emmy in the category of Original Music & Lyrics. The ballad marked the final solo performed by choir standout Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) in the series finale, and it brought the actress to her knees in tears after singing it.

In the featurette, Criss speaks on the challenges he faced in writing “This Time”. “I didn’t want to write a song that would just have no meaning,” says Criss. He decided to focus on Berry, Glee’s poster girl, to “personify everyone else’s journey.”

Criss was a recurring guest star in season 2 as the charming dapper Blaine Anderson, who was the lead singer of The Dalton Academy’s glee club, The Dalton Academy Warblers. Later on, he was bumped to a series regular and became a pivotal character in the series. He is currently starring in the title role Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway.
