Unsafe Abortions on the Rise: New Global Analysis

Unsafe abortions are on the rise across the world, according to a new global analysis by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization. And, after a period of significant decline in the global abortion rate as a whole, researchers found that those numbers had begun to plateau.

From 2003 to 2008, the abortion rate per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15 to 44) changed slightly, from 29 to 28 per 1,000. women But the proportion of unsafe abortions that took place across the world rose 44 percent in 1995 to 49 percent in 2008.

"The stall in the abortion rate coincides with a plateau in the level of contraceptive use, which had been increasing in prior years," said Dr. Gilda Sedgh, lead author of the study and senior researcher at the Guttmacher Institute in New York. "Before the abortion rate stalled, it was declining, and contraceptive use was increasing. Also more abortions are unsafe because a growing proportion of abortions are taking place in the developing world."

Researchers defined unsafe abortion according to the WHO description when analyzing data. The WHO considers an abortion unsafe when a procedure for terminating pregnancy is performed by a person who is lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards.

Scientists based the data on national surveys, official statistics, hospital records and research papers from across the globe.

Despite the decline in the overall abortion rate, the number of abortions increased, from 41.6 million in 2003 to 43.8 million in 2008 because of an increasing global population, according to the report.

While almost all reported abortions were deemed safe in North America and Europe, nearly all abortions (97 percent) in Africa were considered unsafe in 2008. Nearly all abortions were performed under safe conditions in East Asia, but 65 percent were considered unsafe across south central Asia.

Over the past three decades, about 20 percent of all pregnancies around the world have ended in abortion, according to the research.

"What we clearly know is that making abortion less available does not make it performed less often," said Dr. Lauren Streicher, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "It's just more unsafe. Condemning abortion is a cruel and failed strategy."

Even in the U.S., where abortion is currently legal, Streicher said access can be limited based on someone's insurance plan and where they live.

"Fifty percent of undesired pregnancies are due to failed contraception," said Streicher. "Of those unplanned pregnancies, 50 percent resolve in abortion, so the need for abortion is always going to be there. By criminalizing it, you're just increasing the amount of women who have poor and dangerous outcomes.

While some countries have decreased their restrictions on abortion, others have increased barriers to safe abortion through more restrictive laws, unwillingness to train providers, increasing the cost of obtaining safe services and validating abortion stigmatization through perpetuation of cultural and societal norms, said Dr. Eva Lathrop, assistant professor of family planning, obstetrics and gynecology and global health at Emory University Schools of Medicine and Public Health.

Researchers said it appears that family planning programs across the globe have not kept pace with the demand, which has continued to increase because of population growth and as more couple want smaller families.

Experts said the key to keeping women safe requires an improvement in the availability of a full range of contraceptive methods to allow women to choose the method that is best for them. Very few countries have complete bans on abortions, but women and families are often unclear of those laws, so public health advocates and policymakers must provide more education that is readily available to women, health care providers and society as a whole.

"When women are dying from unsafe abortions, their families crumble," said Lathrop. "The health of a society can be measured by the health of the women who are the backbone of that society, and when unsafe abortion rates are high, it is a general indication that the public health system is broken.

"Abortion is the single most important global public health issue, and the single most divisive, yet it needn't be," said Lathrop. "It is time that global leaders have an ethical and open conversation addressing access to abortion as a human right and make swift policy changes towards destigmatisation and legalisation of abortion."

Contraception, to include plan B, must be readily available for pennies. People who cannot afford food must be able to get contraception because they sure cannot afford to be pregnant and they cannot afford safe abortions.

It goes both ways, Steve. If you want to screw around, how about you get yourself fixed for awhile? It's easier for men to have it reversed than women, you know.

you know janet, get real, woman get pregnant and they need contraception and or abortion services for whatever reason and yes, men can do something too.

Folks, do more than pray for the unborn. Put your time and money where your mouth is: adopt a child, fight poverty, feed the hungry, volunteer at shelters, etc. Don't you pro-life folks realize NO ONE wants a woman to have an abortion. Work to fight the reasons behind the abortions. If all you do is pray and judge, you are part of the problem and your lack of action on behalf of others is leading to an environment where folks see abortion as the only option open to them.

Yes, there are ways to help, but ultimately, the issue is personal responsibility. There are of course exceptions, but 99% of abortions would be unnecessary if the man and woman had acted responsibly in the first place.

Sorry, I think that an abortion is an alternative if there is no one that can raise the child, and for whatever reason the pregnancy is unwanted.

We are forcing women into an unsafe situation because they do not want to carry a child to term - We cannot solve that by praying or anything else other than making her choice safe.
      • NOB 4 mths ago
Don't think people don't ... there are multiple homes for unwed mothers, and various organizations that will help those women feeling like they might 'need' an abortion get health care and bring their child to term, as well as a just to life with a child or give the child up for adoption as the mother determines best. Most pro-lifers support such organizations at least financially and many volunteer.

On the flip side, many abortions are not out of financial need but out of a desire to avoid public embarrassment ( for having done something immoral) and 9 months of pregnancy.

One of the reasons abortion has been promoted by 'feminist' is to 'equalize power' between men and women , because they view the 'requirement' to carry a child as 'burden' that men who act irresponsibly don't have , and therefore feel the mother shouldn't have either.

All of those however are poor excuses for allowing legalized murder.

If you don't think a 'fetus' is a human being, check again, 10th grade biology, people are mammals and the mamillian life cycle begins at conception. Arguments about 'person-hood' are spacious and religiously based, but when a 'human animal' starts is something of which there is not debate.

How about supporting life, instead of supporting Holocaust. Oh wait, it was the liberal Nazi (National Socialist) who had the last major Holocaust. Why not a modern Holocaust in the name of "liberty".

Why is contraceptive use declining? I have never understood why making contraceptives readily available to all women worldwide isnt a big priority to anti abortion forces. Preventing abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies seems so obvious.

Did you read this part of the article?

"Fifty percent of undesired pregnancies are due to failed contraception," said Streicher. "Of those unplanned pregnancies, 50 percent resolve in abortion, so the need for abortion is always going to be there."

Streicher may be an ideologue but at least she admits this much fact.

how can you be against abortion against sex ed against condoms against birth control in general and take yourself serious and then have the nerve to tell someone else how to live their life
    • Noel T  •  Mobile, Alabama  •  4 mths ago
Preaching abstinence does not work. Restricting access to abortions or outright banning abortions does not work. Using guilt, humiliation, and intimidation to force women not to have abortions does not work. If you are against abortion, the only way to reduce it is by helping make information, education, and effective birth control readily available and affordable. That will be the ONLY thing that reduces the nubmer of abortions performed. Your religious views will not stop abortion. Education and birth control will. That is a lesson the anti-choice groups need to learn. If they would refocus their efforts into education and birth control, they could dramatically reduce the need for abortions.

An abortion is a medical procedure that should only need be discussed by a patient and her physician. It shouldn't be subject to government intervention.

While there may be many couples and individuals in the US waiting to adopt a baby. Most don't want to adopt and older child. That will only last so long before we are back to having orphanages that can't find families for these children. Look at countries like Russia, China, and most central American countries. They have orphanages with infants that can't find homes.

Leave abortion legal. Make contraception accessible to everyone equally.

If you don't believe in abortion who says you have to have one. Nobody. But don't take the CHOICE away from others.

    • Frasier6670  •  4 mths ago
Well if they make it illegal in this country it certainly will be alot more unsafe. Fact of the matter is that not everyone wants to bring a child into the world or the child was a mistake in the first place, or the woman was raped or it was a case of incest. Most women terminate their pregnancy in the very early stages where the fetus isn't even anything yet. There are so many unwanted and suffering children now in the world. If all you pro-lifers are so pro-life why don't you start doing something about them first, before telling women what to do?
    • Old Wolf  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Yes, I see all the comments here saying the mother needs to die to from the unsafe abortions. How is this a Christian morality. You have no clue as to why the woman feels she can't take care of the child. You want it to be born and put in the forster care system? An orphanage system that is already overcrowded and abusive of the children? Rape victims? A family already overcrowded and unable to feed the ones they have? You also complain about welfare systems you don't want to fund because of women being forced to have the child they could have aborted instead? Not all children are accepted for adaption either or there would not be so many in the foster care system. You can not have it both ways. Let the mother have a choice and a qualified doctor to do the job.
    • My Two Cents  •  4 mths ago
One question for everyone against abortions: if a woman can't afford to raise the child and she can't have an abortion, who will pay to raise that child? YOU?

And you wonder why all of us trashy progressives want birth control and healthcare education?? If you don't want abortions, stop the pregnancy before it starts. Teach kids if you stick this in that, you get a baby.
