Remember when GoDaddy stood firm on its support for the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA)? That’s all in the past now, as apparently the company has officially announced a position change on Friday.

In a statement, the domain registrar pointed out that though it had supported the controversial piece of legislation, GoDaddy along with its general counsel, Christine Jones, had fought to revise some of the uglier aspects of the bill: limitations on DNS filtering, harder consequences for weak claims and a way to protect freedom of speech. GoDaddy emphasized its support for the First Amendment and the importance of the internet for the economy. The company admits to removing any pro-SOPA blog posts to ensure there is no confusion as to what side GoDaddy stands on.

“Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation – but we can clearly do better,” said the company’s CEO, Warren Adelman. “It’s very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it.

Though “Internet community” may refer to the large host of companies, services, and websites who have spoken out against SOPA such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, 4chan, Yahoo etc., it most likely refers to a recent campaign against Go Daddy which began in the Reddit community. Yesterday, Reddit user selfprodigy kickstarted the ‘move your domain day’ boycott which quickly gathered traction and gained anti-GoDaddy support from StackOverflow, the 1,000 domain strong Cheezburger Network, Y Combinator and even Wikipedia. December 29 was the the date for the exodus, though since GoDadddy seems to have received the message the attack dogs will probably be called off. +1 for the Internet.

They spend $5m a pop on a few Super Bowl commercials every year and all that juice they have built up just went down the sh***er!

No one will ever forget what GoDaddy did when it was time to stand up and be counted.

Don't get your information from Youtube. Seriously guy, learn to read and go to the source. Otherwise you're just hearing what somebody with an agenda wants you to hear!
      • key 5 mths ago
do, however not everyone does. Youtube is a simple way to relay ideas and thoughts. everything the guy is ranting about in the video is based on facts you can look up. I prefer to get my information from logical research and cross reference. You shouldn't assume as much. Its a #$%$ good video.

If SOPA had passed, GoDaddy could have just claimed this story infringed their rights and shut down Yahoo or any other outlet that carried it. That's the kind of thing that happens in China and most arab states.

We can't let it happen here!

I read GoDaddy is now distancing itself from SOPA in a different article. Then I read this ones headline. Misleadling. It makes it seem like they're now going BACK to SOPA after leaving it after supporting it. follow?

They are doing the OPPOSITE of what you have said here.

ROFL.... stop online PRIVACY act... who actually writes this crap? Go daddy should still be boycotted... they may have changed their stance to protect their profit margins, but they didn't do it for the people... this is for sure. We need to put them out of business! FYI... #$%$ of a writer... SOPA is STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT... not that it matters because our house and senate would have voted 'ye' the other way with even more votes. Anything to take away the rights of the American people.

"Remember when GoDaddy stood firm on its support for the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA)"
      Is it Piracy or Privacy?
      • PeterAmthor 5 mths ago
The way the bill is worded in places... both.

They are getting the boycott anyways, many groups have already moved their domains or are still planning to do so.

They've removed our right to a trial by jury, a lawyer, and just sentencing with the indefinite detention bill through the NDAA, they've enslaved us to those same corporations throgh bailouts at the taxpayers expense, and now they want to remove the last great hope for freedom of speech to remain in this society? The media is already bought and paid for by the corporations(in most cases, literally LOL) and they want to try to remove the last free speech vestiges of our society? All in the course of a few weeks at Christmas time? Geezus age Christ. Vote Ron Paul or we're F-ed in the A.

P.S. I'd like to F the FED in the A.
      • Joshua 5 mths ago
I lost 425,000 dollars to inflation over the last 20 years, seriously, F the FED.

EVERYONE needs to change their domain TODAY! - Fire GoDaddy... all they are doing is trying to protect their profit margin.
    • JT  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  5 mths ago
I'm going to start boycotting Yahoo! if they don't hire proofreaders...
    • den  •  Lyons, Oregon  •  5 mths ago
I'll support sopa if they they promise to block everything ending in ".gov"
    • Dalton  •  Olympia, Washington  •  5 mths ago
No matter what they say, I'm still moving my two domains from them. They have shown their true colors and are no longer a company that I wish to support.
    • CL  •  5 mths ago
GoDaddy still supports SOPA. Keep transferring domains and keep boycotting.
    • Marc  •  Norwich, Connecticut  •  5 mths ago
There is plenty of technology that the media companies can use to protect against piracy WITHOUT taxpayers having to pay for censorship! SOPA is anti American and should be scrapped immediately.
    • EMB  •  5 mths ago
      Lets now make them NOdaddy.
    • steev  •  Seattle, Washington  •  5 mths ago
Are they against PRIVACY, or is that just a very bad typo?
    • PeterAmthor  •  Wentzville, Missouri  •  5 mths ago
72k domains gone in just the first week. Many more probably coming this next week of bussiness. I think they are going to regret their decision to support SOPA. Hopefully this will send a message to the other supporters as well.
    • Tearless  •  Pauls Valley, Oklahoma  •  5 mths ago
This should be easy to see, but just in case, let's make it clear.

GoDaddy supported SOPA for profit. When GoDaddy feared that they would actually lose profit, they went against it. Don't waste your time trying to believe that they stand for the Constitutional Rights of the people. They stand by their money first & foremost.
