Godmother tells inquiry she warned Manitoba social workers not to give baby back
WINNIPEG - The inquiry into the death of a young Manitoba girl has been told social workers ignored a warning about the girl's father.
Kim Edwards was the godmother of Phoenix Sinclair, who was beaten to death in 2005 after being removed from child welfare and returned to her mother.
Edwards took care of Phoenix for most of the girl's life and says a social worker asked her in 2003 whether the girl's father was fit to parent.
Edwards says the father, Steve Sinclair, was drinking and suffering from emotional problems, so she told the social worker he was not ready to parent.
But Sinclair was awarded his daughter anyway.
Phoenix bounced around between foster care, her family and Edwards's home before being killed by her mother and mother's boyfriend.
