The The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last night at a star-studded ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel in California. Ricky Gervais was back as the host for the fourth time to help dole out the awards, which were spread out across a number of films.

‘The Revenant’ was the biggest winner on the night, scooping three prestigious awards, including Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director and a popular Best Actor - Drama award for it’s star Leonardo DiCaprio.

In his speech the actor, after thanking the film’s cast and crew, also called on the world to recognise the history of “indigenous people” and “protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them”.

There were also big prizes for ‘The Martian’, which won Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (even though its director Ridley Scott expressed shock that it was in this category while picking up the statue). Matt Damon also won the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy award.

Brie Larson cemented her status as an Oscar favourite after winning Best Actress - Drama for the Fritzel-inspired kidnap drama ‘Room’. Jennifer Lawrence could be her competition though after she won (again), in the Best Actress - Musical or Comedy category for ‘Joy’.

There was also a sentimental winner for Best Supporting Actor, with Sylvester Stallone nabbing the prize for his 7th performance as Rocky Balboa in ‘Creed’. Stallone thanked his “imaginary friend” Rocky Balboa” for being “the best friend that I ever had.”
