Google to Test Driverless Cars on Nevada Roadways

The roads in Nevada are ready for driverless robot cars. Earlier this month, Nevada's Legislative Commission approved testing of autonomous vehicles on the state's roadways. The cars will be identifiable by a red license plate.

In fact, any company can test its driverless system in Nevada; Google just happened to be the first to jump on the opportunity. Google's system can be installed on any make of vehicle. The company has been working on their driverless car system for a while and received a patent late last year.

"Self-driving cars have the potential to significantly increase driving safety," a Google spokesperson told Mashable. "We applaud Nevada for building a thoughtful framework to enable safe, ongoing testing of the technology and to anticipate the needs and best interests of Nevada citizens who may own vehicles with self-driving capabilities one day."

Even though the cars are driverless, they cannot be tested without two operators inside. Once the vehicles are shown to be safely operated with just one driver, the cars will receive green license plates.

Tom Jacobs, chief public information officer at the Nevada DMV, said this driverless system is "like cruise control on steroids." Jacobs said he did a radio interview recently in which he was asked if other drivers will ever feel the need to flip-off these cars. His response: no need.

"It had no bad habits," he said of the system.

Jacobs said he rode in one of the driverless cars. When the road is not mapped ahead, the car may give control to the driver after a female voice says, "please drive." If the driver does not take control, the car simply pulls over. There is also a display in front of the passenger seat that shows exactly what the car is seeing outside. This feature is for testing purposes only. Jacobs said the ride was so smooth, he couldn't tell when the driver or car was operating the vehicle besides hearing the automated female voice.

"There will never be any crashes," Jacobs said.

In the future, it's possible automakers will offer this system already installed in vehicles. Drivers without the system built-in may be able to have their cars retrofitted. Jacobs envisioned a world where one day you can press a button on your cell phone, have a car pull up to your house, put your dog in it and send it to the veterinarian.

Jacobs said Google is also testing its driverless cars "quasi-legally" in California, since there is no written rule specifically allowing or forbidding driverless cars. However, Jacobs clearly has a stake in ensuring Nevada is a hub of testing this budding technology.

Regarding the California testing, Google says, "We have received several opinions from outside counsels who are experts in transportation law. All indicated that the testing in California is 100% legal as the safety driver is in control of the car at all times and is responsible for the operation of the vehicle. The testing involves having two people in the car at all times."

"Nevada is the first state to embrace what is surely the future of automobiles," Department of Motor Vehicles Director Bruce Breslow said in a statement posted on the state's DMV website on Feb. 15. "These regulations establish requirements companies must meet to test their vehicles on Nevada’s public roadways as well as requirements for residents to legally operate them in the future."

There are several other states that have pending legislation that would allow driverless cars on public roadways.

Would a driverless car make your life easier? How much would you pay for one? Tell us in the comments.

We already have plenty of driverless cars on the highways. They can be identified by observing cars with the person behind the wheel texting or talking on a cell phone.

When dealing with electronics you are going to have malfunction,
if this car have a malfunction you are going to have an accident
with multiple deaths, I hope congress will never approve this for
public safety. For drivers who are texting while driving if they are
caught the fine must be $1000, second offense jail and license
        suspense to protect human lives.

if it will stop people from being on my tail at 60 MPH i am all for it.
      • stillplayingpsolol 3 mths ago
Well, technically if this technology improves significantly (including cars themselves) we'll all be driving on each others tail at 120mph.

Actually do you think that a bad driver would have the patience to let a computer drive the car safely? I think not, he will just drive the car himself.

Try doing the speed limit and maybe you'll have less cars on your tail?

Google will probably find some way to track where you go and what you do so they can force you to watch targeted advertising while you are being driven around.

should fine driver who is texting when driving $1000,
for second offense jail & take away his license, I do not
want to be kill by these people and DUI.

Pretty bold statement. One thing I have learned, you never say never.

..its a ploy..they're really interested in data..from your where u go on a computer to where you go when you drive and while you're walking (phone) from one to the other. Driverless system is is a well spent investment to them. Dirver safety reasoning..that was a well researched public statement.

So I take my computer controlled car bar hopping, because it's safer, and when I am too drunk to give it proper directions home,it will say "please drive"?

It's 2012...cars should be able to fly by now...i guess everything we heard back in the 80's were all lies!

        80s? How about 60s or even 50s or 40s?

after it crashes it serves up ads for towing services, private hospitals, and prescription drugs. Then it gives your location to anyone who pays for it.

I still drive a 1977 which means I am safe when the pluse from Iran fries your computers in your cars. I do not trust driverless cars. Why doesn't NASCAR test it?

Driverless cars? So exciting to think that soon, our cars will be able to go wherever they want, without us!

In the glorious, fantastic world where computer systems in interface circuitry have no errors, this would be a good idea.
People shouldn't be using computers (so-called smart phones) and computers shouldn't be driving their cars for them.
When the driverless car takes out a busstop full of previously-living people, who gets sued?
      Intel? Foxconn?

Hell. No. I can drive myself just fine, check back in 40 years.

Nevada already has too many drivers with no license, there from south of the border.

Vegas, baby. Some of the worse drivers in the States. Run a yellow light and get T-boned, stop for a yellow light, get rear ended. If you drive Hwy 95 take lots of gas and water. Sometimes you don't see another car for miles and miles. The kids and I broke down on 95, the only shelter for miles was the Cottontail brothel. Car died in front of the billboard. Middle of August, a daughter 6 and two boys 7 and 9. We were there for nearly 6 hours waiting for AAA. The folks there were cordial and welcoming had snacks for the kids and kept them entertained the entire time. Needless to say there was a lot of explaining to do when we got home Family and friends are kind enough to mention the experience whenever and where ever possible. I'm just glad there is no video, although I do have a photo of the Neon in front of the billboard.

I'm drunk, come pick me up!
    • Guapo  •  3 mths ago
And why would we want a car to drive itself? Are we now so lazy yet so busy that we can't sit our lard butts in the driver's seat and actually be responsible for the operation of a vehicle? I suppose it will free up lots of driving time so we can surf the web or play video games...just like at home. Now we never have to leave the couch. Isn't that great?
And how about being dependent on computers for getting you safely to your destination? Most auto manufacturers can't even get the "drive by wire" electronic controls in today's cars to work reliably. Just imagine 6 lanes of self driving, computer guided vehicles. A recipe for disaster.

I already have a driverless car....when my husband is behind the wheel.....LOL!!!!!!!

One day maybe all cars would be like this and Traffic Jams would be a thing of the past. Like Ants' intelligence of the collective.
    • Kaleb Cooper  •  3 mths ago
They say it will be safe, but what happens when one day, when 80% of us are using it, and someone hacks the google servers? We would all crash and die. A terrorist could finally wipe an entire country out in a single swoop
