The first step in Google’s (GOOG) plan for reviving Motorola was to lay off 4,000 workers and creating a DARPA-like research team focused on finding cutting-edge tech. The next step, unnamed sources have told Digitimes, will be to get the company to focus more on high-end smartphones while dramatically cutting down on the number of cheaper entry-level smartphones it produces. Digitimes said that the high-end models would be along the lines of “Android models with some special features such as extra-long standby, specialized sensors, and high-end cameras” such as the Droid RAZR MAXX. At the same time, Motorola would cut down both on the number of entry-level models it produces and on the number of supply chain manufacturers it currently utilizes for those devices.
