How Will Google's New Privacy Rules Affect You?

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.
Do you have a story to tell? Become a Yahoo! contributor

COMMENTARY | Imagine you sign up for an account on YouTube, and the next day when you go to show your kids kitten videos your YouTube page is full of links to stuff based on the "provocative," "edgy" new TV series you looked up last night on Google. Or even videos with names related to the more ... interesting things that you said to your significant other, over Gmail or Google Talk.

Well, guess what? You might not have to imagine much longer. See, Google owns YouTube, along with a ton of other websites like Gmail, Picasa and Google Docs. And it's just announced that starting March 1, those websites are going to start talking about you behind your back. They're going to tell each other about everything you do, and all the stuff you like. And if you have an Android phone, it may tell them all the places you visit as well.

So, wait. Which sites does this effect?

Pretty much all the ones Google owns. In the official Google blog post, it says that "more than 60" separate sites' info about you is being conflated, such that they'll all have the same data and the same privacy policy. "More than 70" sites' privacy policies are currently maintained by Google, though, and the FAQ mentions sites like Google Books and Google Wallet that can't be covered by this because of "industry-specific privacy laws".

Google's Chrome browser is also keeping its own policy, because Google "wanted to explain ... in more detail" how your privacy is affected by using Chrome.

How does my Android phone fit into this?

Google Latitude. It's an app like Foursquare, that posts your "check-ins" to Google's servers. Plus, if you have location services enabled when you use Google Maps on your smartphone, you're telling Google where you are anyway, which is one reason why I see search results and suggestions for someone living in my area.

But that's good, right? That's more useful than normal.

This is true. And if you're concerned about the way Google's using your data, you can flip some switches on the Google Dashboard and Ads Preferences Manager, plus use its Privacy Tools like the Incognito Mode in Chrome to keep it from detecting you. You can even check out Google's official Data Liberation Front to pull all your personal info out of Google services, and find a new home on the web.

The problem is, most people don't know about this stuff, even with Google being so up-front about it and the changes to its privacy policies. And while Google's FAQ goes on about how "beautifully simple" and "intuitive" this makes Google services, most people don't read those "intuitive" documents anyway, and just trust that the law will protect them. When what the law is actually designed to do is let Google build up a file on you, from dozens of websites at once, and use that to essentially buy its own Facebook.

Whats funny is google isn't taking anymore information then they already did.

All they are doing to consolidating it (merging their separate privacy policies into one).

There is no privacy on the web. None. Zero.

oh oh !! I signed for those three !! Now that I know I`m not even going to go to the bathroom!!

Believe it or not, there has been a case of someone photographing women in the bathroom--getting naked for the shower. And it was done without their knowledge, by way of their computers.

But then, Quentin Crisp said, if you find that people are peering into your villa, the solution is, not to build higher walls, but to learn to urinate with style.

I am in the process of changing my gmail address contacts for about a week now. My bank's, brokerage's and healthcare contacts will now be transferred to Yahoo and Hotmail. Sure I will still use Google, but not for anything important.

So what will you do if/when Yahoo is bought by the Chinese-based Alibaba company?!?
      • William 3 mths ago
lol Yahoo already has a similar policy. i.e. To share your data between it's services. So does Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, I'm sticking with Google.
      • Bart 3 mths ago
Good, I am happy for you. Like I said I will still use Google but not for anything important and I do not have a Facebook or Apple account.

I can not say that I am suprised. Everyone company on the web is out to make money and your privacy is completely unimportant to them. Especially when one company owns so many sites. It is truly one of those mixed blessing things. I don't guess I mind to much as long as they keep it in their own house, but I am undecided for sure right now. I will reserve judgement on this policy for a later date.

So they make you sign up (Gmail) when you get an android phone, then they come back 2 yrs later and begin to track you and splay all your business. So now the phone you bought has no (well actually just less) privacy. I would think this issue should be brought in front of the gov't. Antitrust, human rights, etc. There should be an option to opt out! HELLO!!!

I think it's interesting how years ago everyone was fearful of big brother and did everything they could in order to protect their privacy. Now everyone volunteers that information freely on all social media (Youtube, Facebook, etc.). Society basically willingly "big brothered' themselves and shows no sign of retreat.

Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. - Ayn Rand

Google is a contracted company plain and simple. Google sells their products to the government, ironically Google was apparently pretending to be against Pipa and Sopa to what end I have no idea. All these free services Google provides may seem useful and good, but they're a tool to spy on you. That was what the problem was with the Chinese about a year ago with their internet. I'm not going to say it's part of the New World Order because that is childish garbage people want you to believe. It is however a master plan that involves the acquisition of Facebook, Yahoo, msn and finally Google becoming one huge powerhouse corporation, all being owned by Morgan Stanley, which is a crooked investment place on Wall Street. If they manage to get all of these big names, they will sell your private information to the highest bidder and re-figure ways to manipulate internet advertising and put on new restrictions so only certain companies can be allowed to advertise on the internet. In short, you have a bunch of monsters that hate themselves, so in order to feel better about things they'll make the users suffer so they can go off and get their jollies. I personally think they should all be executed for wanting to or thinking they can do whatever they want but that's just my opinion.

Solution: Don't use it the way they expect, all of my mail will be filtered, that means to consider what is said and when and where to look and when and Don't Use Porn Sites or look up dirty movies or any of the other things you might be crucified or humiliated for should it become public knowledge.

I am looking for email services that do email and only email and who aren't owned by Google, Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, etc. Then I will close all of my other accounts.

I think a lot of people are freaking out about this for nothing... but it does show there are a LOT of paranoid people out there. Google has been collecting info for years, so this is NOTHING new, but now they just plan to combine the data and utilize that information to "personalize" your experience- meaning- they plan to target you with ads that are more in-line with your interests. Big deal. Just go and opt-out of all their ad personalization features and don't open Google + or other more personal accounts. I had Yahoo e-mail for years and I switched to Google Gmail because it is MUCH MUCH better- and they offer free 'exchange' push services- whereas you have to pay for that with Yahoo.

However, I AM thankful that I have Apple iOS devices, because I definitely don't agree with them tracking your 'movements' based on Android apps that you've used.
      • Jorge Costilla 3 mths ago
Apple devices track you too you know.
      • michael 3 mths ago
BWT youre just another American ignorant of whats going on. Heres a question, do you value your privacy? what happens years from now when they can track you by your phone and tell your boss/company or tax collectors where you are and maybe even what you are doing? something to think about. There is a certain point when enough is enough.

To answer the title of this article...The changes will not affect me ever because i stopped using google services once i heard this. I welcome anyone else to join me in showing google and the rest of these oversized companies wanting to screw the consumer.
