GOP Blinks First in Budget Stare Down

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

Two weeks ago, federal budget talks stalled as Republicans walked out of a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden. Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) flatly stated "tax hikes are off the table" when it came to budget talks.

The GOP blinked first after President Obama and his aides stared down Republicans in a contest to see who gives in first.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) stated July 6 that a tax hike on one part of the economy would have to be offset by tax cuts somewhere else. It's still a promising sign that debt talks can move forward before an August 2, 2011, deadline to raise the debt ceiling of the United States or face more economic problems.

Without raising the debt ceiling, the United States defaults on its loans and obligations. If that happens, the credit rating of the United States government falls, it would cost too much money to borrow more debt and countries wouldn't want to buy U.S. bonds any more.

The United States economy would be crippled by a debt default. Unfortunately, lawmakers are in a bind much like they were when the recession started in 2008. If they do nothing, it's far worse than taking a short-term hit.

The United States still has to come up with money to pay for things somehow. Whether through spending cuts, increasing taxes or both, raising the debt ceiling only postpones the problem. Massive budget deficits must be made up somehow.

Although solving the budget crisis still has a lot of work to do, the GOP caved in first. They don't want to erase any gains they made in the 2010 election. The status quo of compromise between the two parties will have to be good enough for both of them. The Democrats will have to give a little and make deeper cuts than they want to. The Republicans will simply have to raise taxes on something.

Even Obama's private-sector experts he assembled to deal with the budget difficulty said what is needed is a combination of more taxes and less spending. As with the late-term deals cut in December of 2010, These budget discussions won't be any different. Obama caved in to Republican demands to keep tax cuts for the rich . The Republicans, in turn, kept unemployment benefits for people who don't have work thanks to the recession that occurred on the GOP's watch.

What needs to happen is a tax increase that will affect everyone, rich and poor alike. Raising taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and gasoline only have minimal impacts on the individual consumer as prices would go up only a little bit. Over the long term and millions of purchases later, the tax increases add up.

It's only fair that if both sides compromise and everyone has to share a burden in the budget crisis that all Americans should pay more taxes on things we use.

United States has already Defaulted. Wake up borrowing money to pay off debt? Called Default!
      • John 10 mths ago
You can't just make stuff up like that. The word default has a meaning and it isn't the practice of borrowing money to pay debts. Granted borrowing to pay debt is a horrible strategy in almost all cases and is unsustainable long term but default occurs when you stop paying your creditors which is even worse than borrowing to pay them. Please stop and think before you speak. Please.

Stop giving away American Tax Money to the tune of billions and billions to countries who hate us and use us. End the welfare to Israel, China, Turkey and the other countries we give OUR money to. Tax the wealthy and super rich and the big and large corporations and do not insult Americans by trying to make us believe they need the money to create jobs, creating jobs is just a big scam on the American people. Close the loop holes that were deliberatly writen for the wealthy, super rich, and corporations so they could avoid taxes and stop them from hiring tax people who specialize in avoiding taxes. Make them pay their share too.
Bring our jobs back to the USA that our American leaders sent to mainly China.
Our politicians are Americans and are suppose to be working for Americans not for other countries.

Hah - I just saw your comment after I posted about Yahoo! always being so biased. Thanks for pointing out how in bed they all really are.

I'm not sure the GOP will understand someone who is an UNPAID volunteer. The millions of corporate funds headed to the GOP will erase any volunteer statements.

And the fear mongering begins. We have a plan to save SS by allowing people to own it if they choose. I don't know about you but I could take 2% of my "contribution" and do better with it than the 98% that our plan would allow the government to take. Get your facts straight before you accuse.
      • Tom Kirk 10 mths ago
WE ??? So you read the proposal ???? The 2, 816 page proposal ???? to save SS ? get your facts straight
      • Steven 10 mths ago
really steve h? You probably were one of those people who would have invested in the stock market in 2008; glad we didn't listen to people like you.

A tax increase on the poor? You trying to take them out of the economy? If well to do paid their employees a living wage that kept up with inflation, maybe the 40% I hear that don't pay taxes could.

You clearly don't understand what inflation is. Inflation is the result of the government printing money or by other means "inflating" the money supply. Generally this is done in order to pay for things that they don't have money for. They get off the hook temporarily, and prices go up because there is more money floating around to pay for the same goods and services. Sounds kinda good in a way, except the money is fake money, fiat - and generated on superficial basis, not by true wealth-generating productivity. This inflation hurts the "well to do" that you seem to despise, as much as the poor that you seem to think are victims. Obama has fooled you, my friend. The government is the problem. They create inflation. Taxing anyone, borrowing, and spending more is not the answer.

Yahoo is losing all credibility with accepting stories like this. I thought I was reading something from an impartial party (know that most journalist are products of a liberal college degree) and then I read the author. I guess Yahoo does not even pretend to check the credentials of the person that submits articles for publishing! Another bias media outlet, what a surprise.

They have been provided a budget bill by myself that balances the budget without raising taxes and only cuts 10% from each goverment program but it does force them to take a pay cut which is why they don't want to talk about it. I have sent this budget to the president, the head of the budget committee, and both of my sneators and congress representatives. They just don't feel they should be forced to take a py cut if the bill does not cut military wages only other goverment workers. Well that is just tough luck. They talk about shared sacrifice but make no doubt about it the only shared sacrifice they seek is ours not there.

Can you believe this... Republicans state that eliminating tax loop holes, offshore tax shelters and subsidies are "raising taxes"

What a bunch of phony aholes.

So much for a fair and impartial tax system...

they say mexicans are taking the jobs that americans do not want and i say its not that we do not want them it is the fact that we can not get paid enough to raise a family and pay for medicare
    • James M  •  10 mths ago
The republican's dream list : 1.Eliminate medicare, 2. eliminate SS, 3. eliminate income tax on everyone making $250K.

How dare they even TRY to tax any of my lear jets! My servants just got a huge raise- they now make minimum wage! Too bad they spend 60% of it on Health Care tho... with this outrageous hike I may have to sell one of my yachts...
    • rewinn  •  10 mths ago
If I can't get a tax break for my private jet, I will burst into tears wah-wah-wah!
    • Tony  •  10 mths ago
If President Obama and the Democrats want to raise taxes, tax those people who caused the depression and got the most bailout money without any sacrifice - the Bankers and Wall Street. How about a .1% surcharge on every Bank and Wall Street transaction until the debt is gone. Then we'll really see which politicians are in the Banker's pocket?
    • rachel  •  10 mths ago
well one more obama media lap dogs write a biased piece of garbage, makin everyone but obama bin lyin look bad. try telling the truth sometimes it could be refreshing.

The GOP had better be really careful if they hope to have any chance of regaining credibility with the public.

By not being willing to make a compromise, the GOP will be burdened with the blame if we go into default.

Right or wrong, there will be no escaping that blame either.
    • ICC Dude  •  10 mths ago
The US will NOT default - we'll have to not pay something else to pay the debt, or we won't be able to borrow in the future.
Why does cutting spending send the Dems into such a tizzy?
And it ain't just taxing the rich - I'm not rich and I pay PLENTY of taxes.
The increase of govt. limos has risen 70% during the Osama Admin.
      Less limos, less taxes.
    • Bruce  •  10 mths ago
GOP may blink, but the Democrats will FART away our freedoms and our prosperity. Browning's article smells like a Democrat FART.
    • Adam A  •  10 mths ago
If Obama & the Dems really believe that "shared sacrifice" is necessary 2 balance the budget, then they should have the courage 2 call 4 an across the board income tax increase. Instead, they're fanning the flames of class warfare & dumping on people who already pay WAY more than their fair share.
Meanwhile, I love Paul Ryan, but I was disappointed that his brainchild (The Path to Prosperity) doesn't balance the budget for over a decade. We won't even return to the levels of revenue the gov't collected under George W. Bush until 2016.
We can balance the budget w/o raising taxes; the trouble is there are too many selfish people in this country who feel the gov't owes them something & don't want 2 give up anything.
