GOP leadership faces possible tea party revolt in 2012

Tea party activist David Lewis’s announcement Friday that he plans to mount a primary challenge to House Speaker John Boehner could indicate a larger problem for the GOP leadership, and point to restlessness among an important segment of the tea party faithful.

Republican leaders face a growing perception among some tea party factions that they are not interested in holding the Obama administration’s feet to the fire on spending. Some say the Republicans talked a good game going into the 2010 midterms but have failed to deliver since winning control of the House of Representatives.

“Everybody knows that the debt ceiling deal was a completely fraudulent deal,” Mark Meckler, national coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots, told The Daily Caller. “We were told that if we passed this deal we wouldn’t be downgraded, but we were still downgraded.”

Meckler warns that Republicans and Democrats could both face an electoral bloodbath in the 2012 primaries if they do not do more to hold the line on taxes and spending.

“What we have here in Washington, D.C. is, one, people who are just stupid, or two, they are lying,” Meckler said. “I think it’s both. They don’t understand economics, and they’re lying.”

Meckler criticized House Majority Leader Eric Cantor for throwing away bargaining chips with the White House in successive partisan fights going back to the spring tussle over a government shutdown. (RELATED: Jon Stewart bashes Democrats, not tea party, on summer debt ceiling debacle)

“I’ve taken a number of negotiation classes, and I’ve been a business attorney for a long time, so I know a bit about negotiating,” Meckler added. “The Republican leadership comes to the table and say, ‘We give up.’ I just don’t understand that as a negotiating strategy.

“We are heading off the cliff right now, not two years from now, not 10 years from now, even assuming we could get an ironclad balanced budget amendment.”

Meckler said Tea Party Patriots doesn’t plan to run designated candidates to mount primary challenges, but his group does plan to encourage tea partiers to become heavily involved in their local primaries.

Still, recent history doesn’t bode well for primary challengers. Only four incumbents lost their 2010 primaries, and the typical average is just three per election cycle.

Utah GOP Senator Mike Lee told The Daily Caller that congressional leaders in both parties cannot afford to ignore discontent in the tea party movement, a group that tends to support him. Lee predicts 2012 will be an even bigger election for tea partiers than 2010.

“According to CNN, the values of the tea party represent the values of 75 percent of Americans,” Lee insists.

The Utah senator is less than optimistic about the deliberative outcome of the Joint Congressional Committee on Deficit Reduction. And he predicts a tea party backlash if the “super committee” it doesn’t do a satisfactory job.

But South Carolina GOP Senator Jim DeMint, also a significant player in tea party movement, dismissed Meckler’s cautions.

“I think ‘bloodbath’ is the wrong term,” DeMint said. “There will be some healthy debate in the primaries, but there are a lot of tea parties. I’m getting tired of one person saying they speak for the tea parties.”

A spokesman for the Tea Party Express, one of the most influential national tea party factions, called on members to take a more realistic view of the predicament the GOP leaders find themselves in. They note that Democrats still control the White House and the Senate.

The spokesman said the 2010 midterm victories were part of a longer-term strategy that includes putting a Republican in the White House and taking control of the Senate in 2012 — and then pushing through a filibuster-proof GOP Senate majority in 2014.

“Just having the House [means] you can’t just dictate to members of the other areas of government,” said Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Price, who chairs the House Republican Policy Committee. “The president is hell-bent on spending more money and on taxing more, and on decreasing the ability of our wonderful free-enterprise system to work.”

“The Senate is intent on doing virtually nothing before the 2012 election,” Price continued, “because Sen. [Harry] Reid has some grand fear that if they doing anything over there, that they might be held to account by their constituents.”

Price suggests that tea party members should focus their anger on President Obama, and on Senate Democrats who refuse to make any budget cuts and tackle the national debt.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor could not be reached for comment for this story.

So tell me. Just exactly what would their replacements do?

Most Americans want taxes on the wealthy to increase and they
want spending if it benefits them, eg. Medicare, Medicaid.

I agree...there are really only two important issues....rich people not paying the same high rate of taxes as the rest of us....and that many of our fellow citizens suffer without healthcare.....both are real universal moral issues.. Are we a great nation or a petty me-me-me nation?....that's the debate..

increasing the taxes on those who make more than 1 million only adds 20 billion to the tax roll. Cuts need to be made.
      • Jo Ann 8 mths ago
Perhaps cuts do need to be made but not at the American people's expense.

I sometimes agree with the right-wing loonies, especially on the balanced budget and debt reduction. Where I jump off that bandwagon is when they start by telling us they want to cut social security and medicare instead of enhancing revenues by taxing the rich. The so-called "job creators" must have forgotten they have had tax cuts for the past decade, because there still are no jobs! Cuts to education? Yeah, right! We are already near the bottom in math and science, the two most critical fields of study in this day and age! Shut down the EPA? Gee, why not, if polluted drinking water and unbreathable air are ok with the Chinese, they must be good for us, too! The bottom line for the entire republican party is: Rule #1.THE RICH GET RICHER! Rule #2: See rule #1.

It is not the governments responsibility to educate your child... It is the PARENTS responsibility!!! If your child isn't learning, break out the flash cards, the encylopedias, shut off the Xbox, PS3 or whatever, and teach your child!!! We have been throwing billions away over my lifetime on education and we are going backwards the more we spend. Seriously, this is our problem as a nation in a nutshell... SELF RESPONSIBILITY!!!! Be responsible for yourself, and be prepared to face the consquences of your choices/actions. Spend within your means, take care of your physical and mental heatlh so as not to be a burden on your neighbor.

As for some of the arguments, or discussions, concerning the vast seperation of the left and right... I'm seriously affraid we have gotten to the point of no return. The hatred and vitrol that I see and read everyday tells me this will come down to another civil war. Unfortunately for the left, they don't support the second ammendment so it won't be much of a war really...

nearly a century of socialism has made all of the things you mentioned worse, not better. there are 10 times more poor people. and way more old and sick that cannot afford basic services, there are way more people, especially the poor who are uneducated, before the socialist took over education we had the best education system on the planet, and ordinary working people could get an education from private orgs, because everyone could afford to donate money to them. the EPA has not made one bit of difference in the environment, their only purpose from the beginning was to sabotage industry and prevent jobs. Did you hear what they did at Gibson guitar? the city cops the county cops, the state cops, even the FBI or federal justice dept, needs to have a warrant and charges to break down your door and take your stuff.
You want cleaner cars? just go back to being a free capitalist country! there are engineers all over America who want to go to work on that very issue, but can't because manufacturing is effectively against the law in America.

The Tea Party members don't seen to understand the economics of America. They make these outrageous claims that we are Capitalist and should use Capitalist principles to run this country.
Let us look at that basic premise: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Prescription Drug Plans, Farm subsidies, and Corporate Tax Loop Holes. Does this sound like a Capitalist country to you? How do you create tax code for something that is not capitalist?
America hate the word Socialist and Socialism so much that we refuse to call ourselves what we clearly are.
Economist call our system a mixed economy, I ask the question "Mixed with what?"
Answer: Some Capitalism and some communism. Not in equal parts but enough to be qualified as Socialist. Until everyone fully understand what we are; trying to use only capitalist principles or communist principle will destroy this this economic system.
George W. Bush tried and failed. He cut taxes while having two wars in two theaters at the same time. He honestly believed that cutting taxes (something that would work for a capitalist system) would lead to more revenues. He was wrong. The economy tanked and the entire system fell over a cliff. Spending went up, revenues went down and economic activity came to a halt. Investors ran to commodities to protect their wealth causing everything from gold, silver, oil, etc. to rise and that cost translated through out the world economies. Food riots happened, fuel prices all but shut down transportation companies that could not adjust, and hunger raised it ugly head in America.
The Tea Party don't know how to govern this kind of country and they don't know how to manage the economics of this country. When you hear them talk of capitalism, that is a sign that they ignore reality. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Prescription Drug Plans, Farm Subsidies and Insurance, and Corporate Tax Loop Holes is not capitalism. If this is not socialism, what is?
If you are going to continue down this road, then you had better understand the proper system to govern and the economic system to use for this so-called Mixed economy.
      • carl 8 mths ago
#$%$ Someone gets it! I've been saying this forever. I teach government and economics and this is basic knowledge to my students. I'm beginning to believe that several or most people on this board have no concept of how our government and economy actually works. You nailed it sir.
      • James 8 mths ago
You are correct and that is the basis for the creation of the Tea Party and why those that are fed up with divesting a system that has been mongreled into some abnormal animal that keeps choking. From the 60's forward we've slipped time and again into feel good politics which result in compromising our founding principles until there isn't much left but the left. Obama is neatly taking the next step from socialism to communism. The establishment of Tea Party Groups (and they are varied and different from each other) is to first and foremost bring back the common sense approach to understanding the establishment of government to assist us rather than to ursurp and dictate to us. Liberty was the basis for the Consitution and that it shouldn't be infringed upon except when agreed upon by the bodies within the States. The umbrella of the Fed was for protection of borders and free commerce and to provide for the common good. Which implied and was understood at the time to be anything that insured liberty, property ownership and the pursuit of happyness. Tyrants can never do any of it either as individuals or as a body.

@James, I will have to disagree with you on the issue of Obama. He is as Republican as Republicans ever were. He is so middle of the road that both parties are not satisfied. I clearly see his strategy: Get the other side to move just a little and later get them to move a little more. In time the other side would be closer to where he wants you. The guy is smart. I will give that to him. For example: George W. Bush had to raise the debt ceiling 13 times and went through 13 votes. Obama set the stage to have Congress do it only once and the next time it will need to be raised is After the 2012 election. He thinks 8 to 10 steps ahead and the Republicans don't get it until when they stop celebrating enough to realize that we have been duped.
James, are you saying that the Tea Parties goal is to get rid of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Prescription Drug Plans, Farm subsidies, and Farm Insurance and Corporate Tax Loop Holes? You and I both know that to be a lie. They are fighting tooth and nail for the Farmers Subsidies and they came out and stated their support for Farmers insurance. Why? Farms should deal with the laws of capitalism just like the rest. Maybe I should repost my quote from yesterday?

The rating was downgraded because it took so long to pass it. I would downgrade us too if I watched us bickered for months and then at the last minute pass a flimsy debt ceiling bill. Now Congress can't pass a bill to fund the government beyond September 30. Obviously the S&P's concerns expressed when the downgrade was given was correct cuz here we are again in the same situation.
      • Jim Petel 8 mths ago
You should read S&P report on their impending downgrade decision. It came out last fall.

Funny how they've convinced their followers that the President is responsible for spending the money. All Spending bills originate in the HGouse, then go through the Senate, then the President either signs or vetoes. I wonder how the "patriots" missed that one, since it's clearly spelled out in the Constitution.

Reading these comments, I see an overwhelming amount of crudeness and name calling but very little common sense solutions to the trouble our country is in today. The far right and the far left are the people who dominate what was once intelligent political discourse.. This started in Congress and has been hyped by the media in order to divide and conquer the American people. The majority in the middle are the people who have been hijacked.

The Tea Party is like a cult, preying on emotionally, pyscholigcally challenged and gullible people by indoctrinating their strange ideologies.
    • Lynn  •  8 mths ago
Why can't the moderates and independents in this country - the ones who are most numerous and the ones who frequently determine the winners in elections - come up with their own group or maybe eventually party?? That's what's desperately needed imo. Call it the Purple Party (part blue, part red) or whatever, but it would be composed of all the rest of us who like neither the far left with their give, give, give, spend, spend, spend, nor the far right, with their tax relief, tax relief, stick it to the poor mentality. I'm beginning to think independents have everything they need (reason, common sense, compassion) but lack any desire to organize ourselves like our more shrill brethren do.

A foundation in economics and "modern" political science is not required for legislators. Rather sound bite jousting is their tool to manipulate the gullible voters; and it works perfectly to our peril.

It's not the politicians...it's the lobbyists who control the politicians. Money is the new drug of choice in Washington. Lobbyists own and control the government. If you don't believe so, look at any government budget and tell me all those items are needed. There is no common sense left in government ($16 muffins, $800 hammers, $400 toilet seats, etc). I find it strange Homeland Security has ballooned and is about to become the biggest government agency, yet it is everyday Americans would are aborting terror plots and attempts. Enough of this madness and stupidity!!!
