GOP rivals pass contraception debate, hit Obama

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The Republican presidential candidates are trying to avoid a debate on contraception and instead are looking to keep the focus of their criticism on President Barack Obama.

CNN anchor John King asked the candidates to address their views of contraception, a subject that has risen as a point of contention in the GOP field. The audience at Wednesday's debate booed and the candidates tried to dodge discussion of views that could prove problematic come the general election.

Newt Gingrich says he prefers to discuss Obama's support for "infanticide," and Mitt Romney says Obama is attacking "religious tolerance." Ron Paul, a physician, says immorality leads to the need for contraception, not the other way around.

Rick Santorum says he opposes contraception and says the nation needs stronger families, not birth control.

Keep them poor and keep them coming, at $8 an hour we can still sell them gas but they won't have enough money for condoms or aspirins for the knees of the womenfolk. Let's have lots of babies we can't feed, care for, afford child care, school, health care, etc.
Stap us with more and more stuff while you get billions in perks and bonuses. Look at oh, so Christian Mexico, totally overpopulated, teeming with problems. Get real here, old boys.

Teenager pregnancies and pregnancies of single moms on welfare get 100 times more expensive than contraceptives, both for the health insurance and the society.

Then the welfare to unwed women must have a time limit on it, as well as child limit. The government, or We the taxpayers, should not pay for a limitless number of kids to an unwed woman until those kids reach 18. The woman needs to take responsibility for her actions. Let the women pay for their birth control, not the employer, not the insurance companies, not the taxpayer.

Since birthcontrol products are already available free it is obvious to any thinking person that the single mom thing will continue if not increase in the future.

Stay away from Fake patriots and Religious bigots, who are wolves in sheeps' clothing. Republican retarded bigots want more babies so they can send them to their wars. In their minds a dead fetus is more valuable than dead soldiers.

If the campaign is allowed to hinge on social issues instead of the economy we still won't have jobs.

What's the difference between uneducated muslim zealots in the mid-east and uneducated christian zealots here? Besides the fact that the muslims aren't afraid to blow themselves up?
      • Jonny P 3 mths ago
The only difference is that the Christians in America are having to watch as their religion become more and more powerless and irrelevant.

AHEM* I think these clowns were the ones who STARTED the debate, then fled when they saw it was a losing issue. All this Super Pac money is just turning our elections into a goofy circus.

Mitt_, sorry to burst your bubble but OWEbama and Sebelius started this whole thing by shoving that mandate - you know the one about churches paying for contraception, abortifacients, and abortions - down the throats of Christians. Get your facts straight before you post~!
      • Susan 3 mths ago
Patriot......look at the bills the House was pushing...all abortion attachments. Look at what is happening in Virginia as we speak. Nobody was shoving a mandate....most Catholic hospitals already had that written into thier insurance policies...do some checking anyway!!

Susan - Patriots dont need facts and statistics. They have the word patriot.

I am always shocked how dumb Americans still are in the 21st century. This discussion was finished in Europe already in the 1960s:
If keeping people too poor for affording contraceptives would be an effective method of birth control, then poor countries (and poor families) would have the lowest birth rates.
And even the dumbest religious Right Winger should have realized meanwhile that just the opposite is true.

Immorality leads to contraception? So I am immoral when my wife and I use contraception?
I think that is offensive to married people everywhere.
      • Johnny 3 mths ago
are you really that ignorant and unable to follow the logic that was presented, whether you agree or not? If someone desires to be immoral, as in fornication, they will have a propensity to use contraception. that was the concept, but your brain still probably can't fathom it.
      • earl 3 mths ago
no candidate is trying to stop the use of contraceptives, the debate is weather or not the american people should have to pay for it or force churches to go against their chirstian belief and pay for it. Anyone can buy condoms, iud's, creams etc. The only freedoms being lost here are the American citizen to the central government.

I'm being forced to pay for a bloated military. I suppose you'd consider that a lost freedom too. (And, yes, I served in the military -- honorably -- 68-72.)

It is nice to know that the GOP is focused on jobs & the economy, and not pointless zealotry.

Does anyone besides me see a very strong correlation between what these Republican candidates believe and what Muslim extremist leaders believe? Their attitudes towards women, religion, etc. If you just replace every time they say Christian with Muslim, every time they say Iran (or other Middle Eastern country) with the US, they could practically share each other's speeches.
      • Dini 3 mths ago
@mardee...I have noticed that! Ignorant hypocrites!!
      • Paul 3 mths ago
I have noticed that the there is a strong correlation between the fantasies that people believe in their minds about the Republican candidates and what Muslim extremist leaders actually believe.

omg!!! Don't tell the GOP candidates so we can continue to enjoy the show!

I love how these guys start the debate and then run away from it when they realize how stupid it is to preach small government that monitors a woman's reproductive cycle. We also need to remember that Santorum's wife lived with a doctor that provided late term abortions for six years and that he and his wife murdered their 19 week old fetus.
    • TallDudeRetired  •  3 mths ago
Santorum is pushing Santorum Sharia Law where Grover Norquist becomes Pope, Romney pushes Romney Sharia Law where Grover Norquist becomes Prophet of Utah, Gingrich pushes Gingrich Sharia Law where cabinet posts will be awarded to the GOP with the most divorces, and Paul pushes Paul Sharia Law where Grover Norquist becomes chief Druid Priest.

SO RIGHTWING RELIGIOUS NEOCONS DON'T WANNA PAY FOR CONTRICEPTION then why should i have to pay a dime to cover the cost of two republican abortions called IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN that they then walked out on the wars like the deadbeat father necon of these abortiions I WAS DEAD SET AGAINST SENDING MY SON TO THESE REPUBLICAN ABORTIONS but like all of his family he served his time in the military

Why don't the GOP clowns talk about the economy instead contracption and what Obama is doing wrong? Are they afraid that they will say what they really feel and look stupid? Oh yeah, leave religion out of politics. It makes you look like clowns, well yeah, Clowns. A laugh a min.
    • byron  •  3 mths ago
I guarantee you they do not want to discuss their real stance on social issues. I laughted when they said the crowd booed. I wonder what the criteria was to get into the building to hear the debate. The GOP sheep were definately present.

Why is contraception any of the government's business? It's a personal matter. This issue may just keep me on the sidelines in the next election. It's none of Rick Santorum's business if I and my wife decide to use contraceptives. I'm sick of self righteous, religion inspired, busybodies trying to force their religious views on everybody else.
