Gov. Haley: Romney doesn’t have to release his tax returns [VIDEO]

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley told The Daily Caller that Texas Gov. Rick Perry challenging former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to release his tax returns is a “distraction” and “nothing but a political ploy.”

“I think those are distractions. I saw it in my race. They always say ‘show me your tax return’ just so they can start throwing holes in it. I think that will be his decision to make, but that’s nothing but a political ploy,” Haley, told TheDC in the spin room of the GOP presidential debate. Gov. Haley, a tea party favorite, has endorsed Romney for president

During the debate on Monday night, Perry said, “Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money. And — and I think that’s a — I think that’s a fair thing.”

TheDC also asked Haley if she thinks her decision to endorse Romney has alienated some of her tea party support.

“Everybody I’ve talked to has been incredibly supportive because the tea party understands the power of your voice and that everybody goes and makes the decision that’s best for them,” she told TheDC. “I made a decision based on the governor of South Carolina and that I need a partner in Washington. … I believe in Mitt Romney. I believe he will be the next president, and I think he’s the only one that can beat Obama.”

“It’s going to get tough to get our federal spending from the current 25 percent of the GDP down to 20, down to 18 percent, which has been our history,” Romney said on Monday night. ”We’ve got a huge number of obligations in this country and cutting back is going to have to happen.”

TheDC asked Haley how Governor Romney could reduce spending to 18 percent of GDP without significant cuts to defense spending, which accounts for 19.27 percent of President Obama’s fiscal year 2012 budget.

“This is a man that’s going to look at all of the waste that’s in Washington and say, ‘What do we not need and why do we have to borrow from China to pay for it?’ He’s said that over and over again,” she told TheDC.

“There’s plenty of cuts to be made in Washington. You don’t have to go directly after the military and those that are trying to strengthen our country and protect us to take care of that waste.”

Besides if Sc is going to vote to have welfare recipient drug tested they should require the same from elected officials. They should surely test the one that that co-sponored the bill and gor arrested for DWI last week LOL

He will be last. Otherwise the machine will need two scales, top and bottom. and count the number of times it goes around for him.

Neither should be tested for drugs. Abuse of prescription drugs is higher than the illegal ones. The worst drug abuse result to society is alcohol, which is legal. This is one area which Dr. Ron Paul has the right idea.

Hey Sam, both parties don't release the names of super donors.... aint America great? Unfortunately, the Democrats have a penchant need to give and give to UNIONS, mostly left leaning, even when many in the rank-in-file don't want their dues used this way...aint the Democratic Party Great?

The custom of presidential candidates releasing their tax returns began in 1968, when a candidate - with whom Willard is presumably familiar - named George Romney released 12 years' worth

For a state that booed Ron Paul when he mentioned Jesus Christ's "Golden Rule", should we expect integrity, openness, or honesty?

No worse than people cheering for the death penalty and throwing the uninsured out on the street. This is "conservative christianity" at work - and it is NOT christian.

@Steven... The op is related to the article by means of commenting about the State of SC... where Governor Haily presides. (the woman making the comment)

May be she got some money from superpac to say this. Tax returns showed be filed by all presidential candidates. No exceptions.

The law should be changed to require anyone running for a political office to release their tax information to the public, when they apply for the position. Too many of these people hide facts that they know the public would never elect them, until after they get in office, if even then.
    • chris m  •  4 mths ago
One pundit has said the super rich should be real mad that Romney has decided to run for President since now their tax scam (lower rates the richer you are) will become clear to the public. Before this the millionaires had a good thing going since most Americans didn't realize that the rich paid less in % than the middle classes. Now they do. Romney's candidacy has opened the closet door so the public at large can see how the super rich twist things in their favor.

The GOP insisted again and again for Obama to release his birth certificate. They questioned his birthplace and his allegiance to this country. I don't think its too much to ask of Willard to release his tax statement.

Romney doesn't have to release his tax records. He can simply refuse. Of course, we can simply refuse to vote for him.

Here's the rub! Historically, "investment" was a way to capitalize companies that actually made a product, provided a service. There was at least some justification for treating investment income somehow differently from "real" income. Today, "investment" is entirely the investment class churning money to create profit - and WITHOUT any other economic value. And worse, alot of that churning benefits are off-shored so even paying at "investment" rates short changes the 90%.

As a GOP voter, I despair Romney's answer that Bain created 120,000 jobs; that's not the "net"; unstated are the jobs lost AND the tremendous, disproportionate expense of those jobs compared to the profit removed with those transactions.

The despair is deeper. There are no obvious choices. Our entire leadership class are members of the 10%; likely most are 1%. They are true to themselves - and vote their pocketbook - just as most of us do. You don't kick a dog for being a dog.

The saddest thing is the media talking heads preaching progressive or liberal values are simply slightly larger hypocrits as they too are members of the elites - and don't recognize their own hypocracy.

True, Mitt doesn't have to release his tax returns ..... and we don't have to vote for him ......

This man took his family on vacation, a 12 hour drive, put his dog in a kennel and tied it on the roof of his car. A 12 hour drive. And we want to trust his judgement - really.

Guarantee you that Romney pays not only a lower rate, but less then i as a small business owner. How many times do have to get F90yed before we no longer stand for this? You are either honest or not. If you are not willing to disclose then you are saying that you are not willing to be honest. Lets face it Romney is a multiple loser who will now do anything to get elected. Doesn't matter to him who he steps on or if what he says is true. And if you think average Joe that he gives crap about you then you are an idiot.......

You wonderful people of South Carolina, your own Governor just slapped you across the face and said they are better than you. Try and get a job without running a credit report. Try and get a job without taking a drug test. Try and get a job with any government agency and see how fast you or I would be asked for our past 3 years of tax forms.
Yet, these too big to fail people who are above you or I Joe Everyday Citizen, can run for PUBLIC office or even the President of the United States, and although they will or are supposed to be serving the people in those capacities, tell us citizens, you and I, that they don't have to show us anything. They are above us.
Your own Governor just told you to shut up and vote for the bought and paid for minion, as she is, and don't worry about how much money this guy has made while living off the public trough in an Ivory Tower, while 47 Million People are on Food Stamps. All because there are no jobs, Romney and Bain Capital destroyed jobs and sent them overseas for their PROFIT!!!
Who put Haley in Office?? Fools!!! She does not support the people, she just proved it.
    • chris m  •  4 mths ago
He doesn't HAVE to, but if he wants to be elected, he ought to. Otherwise.... An additional note re his "out of touchness" with the general public. He got $370,000 from giving speeches last year. He said that "wasn't very much money." Of course not; it's just about five times the yearly income of at least half US families. Not much indeed to a super rich millionaire.
    • skeptic  •  4 mths ago
Right, he doesn't to release tax returns, and he doesn't have to run for pres, and we don't have to vote for him if he does. Thank you, Gov Haley.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  4 mths ago
No, Mr. Nikki, Romny doesn't have to disclose his tax return and the American people don't have to vote for him or for you.

Nikki what makes Romney so special that he does not have to show his taxes. He's not hiding anything is he, like off-shore accounts?
