Government Food Gestapo Pronounced a Preschooler's Lunch 'Unhealthy'

COMMENTARY | According to WGHP, a preschooler and her mom ran afoul of the Food Gestapo at her school in Hoke County, N.C. It seems the preschooler's lunch did not meet Food and Drug Administration guidelines for what a healthy meal ought to be.

The meal she brought from home consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, potato chips and apple juice. Nevertheless, the kid was forced to eat what the school cafeteria offered, which oddly enough included chicken nuggets -- and the mom was billed for the cost.

According to the Civitas Institute, this kind of food Nazism is the result of Obama administration guidelines and is widely practiced in American public schools. In other words, the government has decided it knows best what kids should eat. Parents should have no say in the matter.

In a Fox News segment, the lunch the unnamed preschooler brought from home pretty much met FDA guidelines. It had meat, a dairy product, grain and two servings of fruit. In other words, the Food Gestapo at the Hoke Country preschool was not only being officious and intrusive but incompetent as well. In what physical universe are chicken nuggets healthier than a turkey and cheese sandwich?

In a way, the incident illustrates how tyranny begins. It does not begin with mass roundups of dissidents, concentration camps and summary executions. It begins with small, annoying rules like the government guidelines on what kids should and should not eat.

It goes almost without saying this practice has to be stopped. The bureaucrat who rifled over the little preschooler's lunch needs to be identified and shamed. He or she should be fired or forced to resign as well. If it takes legislation to stop government Food Gestapo agents from micromanaging the lunches mothers pack daily for their kids to eat, then Congress and the state legislatures across the nation need to get to work immediately.

Otherwise, if we cede to the government the right to determine what kids eat for lunch, eventually it will dictate what all of us eat for dinner. Then people will have lost control of every aspect of daily life.

No one has any business going through my kid's lunch to see if it meets their requirements.

I sure hope the mom involved sues the socks off the union for violating the fourth amendment.

Harry, you are so right. It's the Union people. They have no right to go through our kids lunch, unless they have reason to believe their is a weapon. The school's should look into this with the government.

My daughter eats 5 small meals per day, as required to maintain a athletes body. If she decides to eat Popeye's fried chicken, I'll join her. She is 5'8 and 145 lbs, and plays a highly competitive sport. She has taken many courses on nutrition, and how to provide the best meals. The food administrator is a total #$%$ that is extending her power under the Obama regime.

Setting and enforcing food guidelines to ensure that developing brains and bodies have proper nutrition leads to mass roundups of dissidents, concentration camps and summary executions? Yeah right! Give us a break you paranoid phreak!

I read his statement slightly differently, tyranny starts by making people accept the little hassles with resignation. Then a new set of "acceptable and totally reasonable" little hassles is layered on, then another and another. The object of tyrants is to gain control of people, not to round people up at gunpoint. Armed round ups are the least desirable, and most likely to backfire method to gain control. They are a means, not and end. Death by stifling bureaucracy and insufferable busy bodies is slower, but more effective.

        CHICKEN NUGGETS?

Dude, didn't you see Jamie Oliver's show about those? No thanks...only a government idiot would declare fried processed bird offal as "healthier" than a turkey and cheese sandwich.

        Go away, government apologist.
      • Count Your Change 3 mths ago
Jamie Oliver's show was about McDonald's McNuggets, which I agree is foul food that should not be consumed by humans. Parts is Parts! But not all Chicken Nuggets are just junk. Many are made with chicken breast. I have no idea what kind of nuggets they made that kid in NC eat. While I agree with the spirit of the regulations to get kids to eat better, it seems rediculous to throw away a turkey and cheese sandwich for chicken nuggets. What happened to common sense?

Only an idiot or someone at FOX "news" (But I repeat myself) would use the word "Gestapo" to describe an attempt to get children to eat healthier food

I don't know, the imagery associated with the word Gestapo (a contraction that identifies the state police of Nazi Germany) is guys in black uniforms, demanding your papers. That is not that far from a preschool bureaucrat demanding to see what is in a child's lunch sack. The truly disturbing thing to me is the fact that the inspector has the right to charge the parent for the service of rejecting a perfectly edible and typically nutritious meal. It looks to me like the preschool may have profit considerations pushing for the rejection.

Rand March, in what universe is a turkey and cheese sandwich less healthy than chicken nuggets that are processed with who knows what?
      • Roy 3 mths ago
Rand, you are a #$%$!!. getting kids to eat healthier, I refer to you to see Lew's post again and reconsider how you must be short bus special to focus on a single word used in OBVIOUS HYPERBOLE (big word I will let you look it up) to get the sheep of this nations attention. Obviously you were dropped on your head as a child or raised by the same #$%$ who thought Clinton was a good president.

How assinine. It's one thing to require schools to serve healthy meals which is the reason for the guidelines. It is a completely different matter to tell a parent what to pack in a kid's lunch. I don't think Michelle Obama is trying to dictate what parents must send their children for lunch. That's an overzealous idiot at the school that needs to be fired.
    • Harry  •  3 mths ago
It's not the government food guidelines. It's the Service Employees International Union. Forcing kids to eat the school meal guarantees jobs for the unions employees and even allows them to increase what schools are forced to spend on union wages and benefits for food service workers. Blame the union, not the guidelines.
