Gov't to carmakers: Harness dashboard technology

WASHINGTON (AP) — Carmakers should design potentially distracting dashboard technology so it's automatically disabled while the vehicle is in motion, federal safety officials said Thursday.

In recent years automakers have been loading high-end cars with an array of built-in gadgets that enable drivers to multi-task behind the wheel — equipment that enables text-messaging, Internet browsing, GPS navigation and phone dialing. But this technological advance has raised concerns that drivers' attention will be diverted from the road.

The new dashboard technology guidelines, proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, would exempt electronic-warning systems that alert drivers to potential collisions or lane changes, however.

The guidelines also include recommendations on how to make dashboard devices less distracting and time-consuming to use, including reducing the need for drivers to turn their eyes away from the road. The guidelines are aimed at passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, not trucks.

"We recognize that vehicle manufacturers want to build vehicles that include the tools and conveniences expected by today's American drivers," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "The guidelines we're proposing would offer real-world guidance to automakers to help them develop electronic devices that provide features consumers want without disrupting a driver's attention or sacrificing safety."

The guidelines are a good first step toward reducing driver distractions, said Barbara Harsha, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state highway safety offices.

But "the safest thing is for drivers is, not use these systems at all — both hands on the wheel and the mind focused solely on driving," she said.

NHTSA is also considering future guidelines to address portable electronic devices drivers carry with them in cars, including GPS navigation systems, smart phones, electronic tablets and pads, and other mobile communication devices.

In December, the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigation highway accidents, said that texting, emailing or chatting on a cellphone while driving is simply too dangerous to be allowed and urged all states to impose total bans except for emergencies.

Currently, 35 states and the District of Columbia ban texting while driving, while nine states and D.C. bar hand-held cellphone use. Thirty states ban all cellphone use for beginning drivers. But enforcement is generally not a high priority, and no states ban the use of hands-free devices for all drivers.

To me it is just something that will break and cost a fortune to fix. Give me a plain radio period!

There should be more vehicle offerings with just the basics. No electronics. It will have better mileage and not be in the repair shop all the time.

Oh sure, lets ban the GPS, fumbling with paper maps and peering around looking for street signs is soooo much safer than voice directions prompting you where to turn ahead of time and warning "gongs" to let you know when you are speeding.
      What a bunch of maroons!!!!

How about they stop automobile manufacturers from pre-installing all that crap, e.g. smart keys, a little ridiculous that a replacement key should cost over $200.

Cars should be designed to float. So that when you drive drunk off a pier you don't accidentally kill your secretary.

Government intervention is not the solution, it is the problem.

When you have an executive and judicial branch of govt that has no respect for the Constitution, why it's there, what it says etc this is what you get. The Obama Junta wants to run everyone's life cradle-to-grave and dictate everything to the business world. So long, "limited powers" clause of the Constitution and with it Limited Government.

        All say, "Seig Heil!"

Good. The accident rate shows that we are obviously too stupid to not use gadgets while driving. As for regulations, I like 'em. I like clean air and water, and safe cars too. Regulations exist because people don't do the right thing otherwise. It's just a fact.

Now there's a shocker. Good thing big brother is watching over us. Prior to the technology, we had:
Bored kids acting up in the backseat with mothers turning around to smack them.
Stereos - Changing radio channels, tapes, CDs.
      Men shaving/women putting on makeup
      Drivers pulling out maps

Face it, as long as a human is operating a vehicle, there will be distractions. Even if someone is alone, in silence, no technology, there are people and places around the driver who can cause distractions. How will the government keep that from happening?

That's right. But these proposal tackle a problem which is ADDITIONAL to the ones you list. Let's fix what we can, eh?

Problem is that legislation such as this is an empty gesture. We want fewer accidents, start enforcing the traffic laws. Every day, on my way to and from work, I see countless traffic law violations. Heck, many times the police are the guilty parties.

In other countries, the penalties for breaking traffic laws and much steeper and enforced more rigorously. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege and if someone abuses that privilege, they lose their license.

thats why when I worked at ford we called the new technology " stink " instead of Sync !! not to mention most folks over 50 dont even bother with it ..

Disable GPS in cars? What's the point then? Go back to printing off Google maps and putting the paper in front of your face as you drive? Not all of us have every city memorized that we visit on business trips.

No one better interfere with my god-given right to splatter myself along the inside of my windshield when I hit something head-on. Get rid of the seatbelts, shoulder restraints, headrests, air bags and all that other annoying stuff. I want eighteen speakers that will blow the windows out. Heck, while you're at it, rip out the front and rear windshields. I wanna feel the wind whistling through my skull. Oh yeah, and put a full pitBBQ grill in there as well sos I can cook some burgers, and replace the driver's seat with a hot tub. And everybody else on the road -- get out of my way! [sarcasm, every last bit of it, too!]

as a radio operator I would not want the privillage of talking on a ham radio taken away but i can assure you that driving with a cup of your favorite jo and shift leaver in your hand ,a mike in the other and switching channels all at the same time can take you away from what is going on on the road.

They are tracking all the vehicles on the road that have the "high end". equipment. All cars will be required to have GPS soon so the police state can watch you.

More rules? Wow. I wonder what government would do if they watched some training films on the meaning of limited government. I think their heads would explode. How about this for motor vehicle regulation: "Drive at your own risk". Get rid of all the rest of the rules, and ;let the customers determine which car manufacturers survive or not. I just saved $100B/yr from the federal budget by getting rid of the rules but the majority of Americans are wusses who wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they didn't have a nanny government telling them what they can or can't do. So expect this post to get a lot of thumbs down or negative comments. Liberty is dead - most people don't care and don't want it.
