Gov't: Health tab to hit $4.6 trillion in 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's health care tab is on track to hit $4.6 trillion in 2020, accounting for about $1 of every $5 in the economy, government number crunchers estimate in a report released Thursday.

How much is that? Including government and private money, health care spending in 2020 will average $13,710 for every man, woman and child, says Medicare's Office of the Actuary.

Compare it to this year, when U.S. health care spending is projected to top $2.7 trillion, about $8,650 per capita, or roughly $1 of $6 in the economy. Most of those dollars go to provide care for the sickest people.

Along with rising costs, the report found that the share of the health care tab paid by the government keeps growing, approaching half the total.

The update from Medicare economists and statisticians is an annual barometer of a trend that many experts say is unsustainable, but doesn't seem to be slowing. A political compromise over the nation's debt and deficits might succeed in tapping the brakes on health care, but polarized lawmakers have been unable to deliver a deal.

The analysis found that President Barack Obama's health care overhaul would only be a modest contributor to growing costs, even though an additional 30 million otherwise uninsured people stand to gain coverage.

Instead, health care spending keeps growing faster than the economy because of high cost of medical innovations and an aging society that consumes increasing levels of service.

Many of the newly insured people under the health care law will be younger and healthier, so they cost less. Over a million young adults under age 26 have already gained coverage through their parents' insurance. Millions more will get insurance when the law's big coverage expansion kicks off in 2014.

That year, health care spending will jump by 8 percent. But over the 2010-2020 period covered by the estimate, the average yearly growth in spending will be only 0.1 percentage point higher than without Obama's overhaul. Most of the newly insured are not expected to require much pricey hospital care, generally needing only doctor visits and prescription drugs.

Another reason for the optimistic prognosis is that cuts and cost controls in the health care law start to bite down late in the decade. However, the same nonpartisan Medicare experts who produced Thursday's estimate have previously questioned whether that austerity will be politically sustainable. If hospitals and other providers start going out of business, Congress may reverse the cuts.

The report found that health care spending in 2010 grew at a historically low rate of 3.9 percent, partly because of the sluggish economy. That will change as the economy shakes off the lingering effects of the recession.

Government, already the dominant player because of Medicare and Medicaid, will become even more important. By 2020, federal, state and local government health care spending will account for just under half the total tab, up from 45 percent currently. As the health care law's coverage expansion takes effect, "health care financing is anticipated to further shift toward governments," the report said.

Estimates from previous years had projected that the government share would already be at the 50 percent mark, but the actuary's office changed its method for making the complex calculations. Under the previous approach, some private payments such as worker's compensation insurance had been counted in the government column.

Technical accuracy — not political pressure — was behind that change, said one of the experts who works on the estimates. "This was an internal decision that was not influenced by any outside party," said Stephen Heffler.

Separately, another new report finds that the United States continues to spend far more on health care than other economically developed countries. The study by the Commonwealth Fund found that U.S. health care spending per person in 2008 was more than double the median — or midpoint— for other leading economies. Although survival rates for some cancers were higher in the U.S., the report found that quality of care overall was not markedly better.

The Medicare actuary's report on health care spending is published in the journal Health Affairs. The actuary's office is responsible for long-range cost estimates.

My husband has a heart problem and occasionally needs a treatment which costs about $6000 with one overnight stay in the US. We were on vacation in northern Italy and he needed the same treatment and it was only $650, including an overnight stay, at a large modern hospital known for their cardiac care. The problem is the medical industry costs in the US are out of control. I just had surgery for a broken ankle, 2 nights in the hospital for $36,000. Unfortunately, those of us with insurance are paying for the people who refuse to get insurance, when they eventually need care! The problem isn't "Obamacare", it's the out of control costs of the medical industry.

No! They have good medical care outside of the US? And it's affordable? Americans need to travel more outside of their own country physically and mentally.
      • charles 10 mths ago
That story can't beat this. A friend of mine from Mexico went to one of the highest rated cardiac hospitals in the world right here in the U.S. ,spent five days in the hospital undergoing tests and procedures and didn't have to pay anything.

"Unfortunately, those of us with insurance are paying for the people who refuse to get insurance, when they eventually need care! " WTF? As if not being able to AFFORD insurance would mean REFUSING to do so.
    • The Right thing!  •  10 mths ago
Our Government officials need to be put on the same medical plan as the rest of America. I'm sure that will fix the problem and answer all the questions. ANybody know jow to get it on the ballot?
      • Dudenohair 10 mths ago
Uh.. vote for people who run on that premise? Run for office yourself? If elected, be willing to sell your soul on another issue in exchange for votes on your issue?
      • needan 10 mths ago
I think I do. Maybe someone else can confirm. Statewide they do it with tens of thousands of signed petitions to put something on the ballot. For an issue that is national, we might need tens of millions of signatures. For something as huge as this is, may be well worth the effort what goes into getting this done?
      • John 10 mths ago
@The Right Thing: Funny thing is, Obamacare did exactly that. But, of course, Republicans ignore the facts.

Let's see, dental work in the US, two root canals and a crown with insurance, total quoted cost: $3160.00 Same dental work in Thailand (in a more advanced facility), no insurance, just pay for it (like everyone should), total cost: $723.00. America has become the land of $$ slaves.
      • david 10 mths ago
You must have went to Bumrangrad Hospital. I got the same work done at a great dentist for almost half of that. But you point is right on, and all of health care in Thailand is that way, great care at a price you can afford, no insurance needed.

We spend far more money on healthcare then any other country, even those "socialized" "communist" countries. Worse, our government itself spends more money than other socialized countries.
      • john appleseed 10 mths ago
Maybe thats because we have the 3rd highest population and highest gdp by country? just maybe

More per capita and more as a percentage of GDP.
      • glenn 10 mths ago
we spend more money on healthcare due to the super rich wants more money so the insurance and medicalcare think they need to become rich overnight, people that are not millionaire's or billionaires need to stop thinking thier in the same tax bracketts as the super wealthy, the gop's don't give camel snot about you, only the super rich, you want help and to do lots better with your income? vote democrat, or quit griping when you vote gop and they ruin the whole nine yards for everyone except the super rich
    • EARTH  •  10 mths ago
The CBO estimates that $100 billion is milked from medicare just in fraud a year. The government is to fric'n big, & they have no clue as to what is going where. Except for perhaps the amount of dollars being slipped into their pockets?
    • The Sherrif  •  10 mths ago
There are 2 things wrong with heathcare that everyone knows. 1. It is a giant industry making unheard of amounts of money. I am not saying health care is a bad thing just too expensive generally. 2. Not one cent should be spent on someone who has not paid into the syustem namely illegal immigrants. Too many people say these can't be managed which is baloney!
      • MSK440 10 mths ago
Making unheard of amounts of money? The profit margin in the health insurance business ranges from 2% to 6%,not nearly the margin of an Apple or Google.
      • Daniel 10 mths ago
2-6% of a $4T industry is still quite a bit.

1 tylonol in the hospital going up to 50 bucks by 2020 ..
    • KevinDebT  •  10 mths ago
I blame the healthcare industry. My 68 year old mother is on 18 different medications. She has been taking the purple pill for 15 years to help with her GERD which was caused by her diabetes medications. She has osteoperosis which was caused by her heart medication. At what point do the doctors stop handing out meds like candy? Oh I know…when they stop getting kickbacks from the med companies.

In the 60's, as a child, I was in the hospital for 10 days with a burst appendix. The bill was $495.00, or about 2 weeks of my father's salary. Today, 10 days in the hospital your looking at $100,000.00, or 2 years salary. This is directly created by government intervention, automatic increases, driving the price of private health care cost, beyond the normal rate of inflation.

Remember Obama's campaign words,"Wealth Redistribution". So, if you are in welfare, or someone who enjoys the government hand out and not work for a living, Obama is your guy.
For some of us who wants to get ahead financially, forget it because the moment you become successful because of your hard work, Obama will take it away from you and redistribute it to SOME people who does not want to do anything than collect food stamps.

Some drugs made in the USA are exported to Canada at a price 10x cheaper than sold to a US citizen inthis country. My mother who went to Emergency for 3 days had a 55k bill. I could not remove gauze from my shoulder and it was getting infected. I went to an empty emergency room and the Dr. literally had taked 2 minutes and I got a $1500.00 Bill. Until our Govt addresses these ridiculous charges it does not matter if a Govt plan, private insurer or a person pays. The bottom line is SOMEONE is paying for it and its our economy. Govt should only intervine somewhat when the free market and private sector cant fix it. 1 dollar out of 5 is RIDICULOUS and DANGEROUS. I think that qualifies for a reason for Govt to intervine or we can go broke as a nation.

I have an idea take the money we taxpayers pay to run this country help take care of us and let the other countries fend for themselves. Our government stinks .
    • Michael  •  10 mths ago
If everybody paid for their own health care, like they have to do their automobile care, economic life would be much fairer. Where is the reasoning that results in somebody else paying for my health care expenses? Just answer that question, if you want to be honest in this discussion. Anything else said is nonsense.
    • ****  •  10 mths ago
well, well. is the end of the bloated fraudulent medical establishment finally coming? Just like the medieval church establishment, why does it cost so much to talk to God? Maybe, the less invasive, less expensive and effective methods of healing will see the light of day again. they were all killed by the AMA using the FDA. and the ones that survived are being used in fear of prosecution. Presently, cancer treatments are a multi billion scam. Read Forbidden Medicine by Ellen Brown. The majority of the public does not even know that they have been brainwashed and scam into this high usage of poison chemical drug approach. Now they are heading China.

The 'baby boom' is a well known fact, and they paid in on SS and all the other monies deducted from their income. It should have been put up for these times, instead it was used for other "crap",that's govs doing!

If anyone pays attention to the the news in the medical industry, consider a few small facts, that are just a sample of why our healthcare spending is getting out of control:

There are various symptoms of disease, illness, or "unhealthy" levels that are lowered on a regular basis, causing treatment (usually in the form of medication) to kick in earlier than usual. Take, for example, that recently, the level of what is considered high blood pressure in need of medication was lowered. Instantly, thousands of people became "in need" of a prescription to regulate blood pressure.

The cancer industries standards of detection, and standards of "survivorship" skew the numbers, and make it appear we are somehow "winning the war". However, the reality is, if you study the numbers, that we are simply diagnosing many people earlier, and it is known that they have cancer longer, so when they've had it for 5 years, they are included in the number of "survivors". Add to this the fact that the number of cases is increasing, merely because of the drop in thresholds of detection, and you can start to see that we are being fed a bunch of lies.

A vast majority of our ailments, that contribute to our lowering health standards, and increased cost of care, can be fixed by dietary education, but the FDA is heavily lobbied by the pharmaceutical industry, as well as many food industry groups, such as the american dairy association.

If there is anyone that doesn't believe that the government healthcare agencies are in the pocket of the pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment companies, you're dillusional. This includes the very authors of the healthcare overhaul bill. There is NOTHING in that bill that is going to help our problems. They are simply going to make a larger bureaucracy out of the whole mess.

The biggest problem with our healthcare costs in this country continue to be the fact that we, as a country, continue to live less healthy, by virtue of being too busy to stop and pay attention to what we eat, or to stop and get some exercise.

Matter of time before the house of cards falls flat. All the old geezers running this country need to be fired and hire new younger blood. They have been controlling this nation way too long with there self centered ways, it is time WE take back our nation. But are we brave enough to face the bull by its horns? I do not know about you chicken #$%$ but I am... I am tired of this crap. I urge each and every one of you posting on yahoo in regards to this nations crap to Email, Snail mail, call, and/or even go to your local Senator/Rep for your area and tell them what you really want done. If you don’t voice your own opinion or let them know you do not like what they are doing, they will walk all over us and we will be left in a nation less desirable then it is already. Again, if you do not voice anything, it means you don’t care about your future.
    • Fedup  •  10 mths ago
We could cut that amount by getting rid of the Anchor Baby law which allows the new citizen access to all sorts of social services which includes health care.

Go use your search engine now and look up "Stand up Straight" written by Robert Creamer. Creamer is the husband of one of the most liberal members of Congress and lawayer for the SEIU, Acorn and George Soros. Stand up Straight was the path to power for the democrats to turn our system into a socialist one party system with power to the progressives after crashing the economy and currency.
