Grammy surprise: Who's that? His name is Skrillex

NEW YORK (AP) — Many people were surprised when the name Skrillex was announced in the best new artist category, along with the likes of Nicki Minaj and The Band Perry, during this week's televised Grammy nominations special.

Count Skrillex as one of them.

A day after earning a whopping five nominations in total, the 23-year-old dance and dub-step producer is still taking it all in.

"It just hasn't really hit me yet," he said in a phone interview from Manchester, England, on Thursday. "I wouldn't have thought I would come this far in so many ways."

Skrillex scored the third-most nominations, matching Lil Wayne. Kanye West leads with seven nods; Adele, the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars scored six each.

The Los Angeles-based Skrillex, born Sonny Moore, may be best known for "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" (he's also a producer on Korn's new album, "The Path of Totality," out next week).

Skrillex hasn't had much success on the Billboard charts — he's more of an underground artist. He'll have some tough competition in the best new artist category: Besides facing The Band Perry and Minaj, who were both nominated for Grammys earlier this year and have dominated their respective fields and at other awards shows, he'll compete with Bon Iver, a critical darling, and J. Cole, who had a No.1 album and is the protege of Jay-Z.

Skrillex is nominated for best dance recording for "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," and also nominated for best dance/electronica album for his EP, which shares the same name. In 2010, Lady Gaga earned those trophies, and Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)" was the winner of best dance recording earlier this year.

Skrillex will have to battle Robyn, Deadmau5 and David Guetta, acts who come from a similar background to his.

"I feel very proud of where I come from," Skrillex said of being in the electronic music scene, a genre that has exploded on Top 40 radio in recent years. "I do feel like I represent something and I'm a part of something and it's an honor to be there."

Skrillex, who is also nominated for best remixed recording (non-classical) and best short form music video, says he hopes his Grammy love will give more attention to the dance music genre.

"I just hope it opens more doors for next year, not only Grammy nominations, but just everything in general," he said.

The Grammys will be held Feb. 12 in Los Angeles.

Nicki Minaj has no musical talent, why was she nominated? So she can get on stage and make funny sounds while she pretends to rap?

I agree. I stopped watching The Grammys after 2002. I became disgusted at the nominees and even more so at the winners. When The Grammys gave Usher Raymond the award over Maxwell for "Best Vocal Performance" in 2002 (Usher can NOT sing; Maxwell CAN) I knew I had to stop watching. The Grammys stopped honoring the truly talented in music. They are now one big popularity contest. It's no longer about music talent and skills, it's now about SALES! I'll be the first to say that sales do NOT automatically reflect TRUE artistry and talent. I am almost 44 years old. I have possessed a love affair with REAL MUSIC since I was a baby, so I think I know a little something about LEGITIMATE ARTISTRY! Throughout the years of my life, I have seen many "recording stars" sell millions upon millions of records and go number 1 with some of the most truly godawful noise I have ever heard in my life! Today, there is NO respect, NO regard for musical longevity, artistry, development, and legacy. The music industry currently has a "microminute" approach to music and its consumers. It's ALL about money. PERIOD. If someone buys it, the industry will continue to force it on the masses.... even if it is GARBAGE, which is 99.9 % of what passes for music today. And these music awards show (ALL OF THEM) endorse the GARBAGE. I just read that Kanye West garnered SEVEN (????!!!!) Grammy nominations for the 2011 award shows. And for what? An ego-maniacal guy who steals other people's music, puts stupid "lyrics" over it, and all of a sudden, he's revered as a "genius"???!!! Wow, that's truly sad. Music has indeed taken a might fall from grace.

Thought I'd give this a chance. Some interesting ideas but I couldn't listen to the CD all the way through. Sounds like the Black Eyed Peas doing a soundtrack for a video game.

Thanks but I'll stick to geezer rock like Zep and the Stones and newer guitar based stuff like Jack White and the Black Keys.

There is a VERY big difference between what the BEP do and what Skrillex does. Skrillex' sound is unique to him and only him while the BEP are just generic club techno-pop.

Really? the grammys are nothing more than an show that honors popular radio music and highest album sales. Give me a break these idiots don't know music.
    • tony  •  Paducah, United States  •  5 mths ago
Why is Nicki Minaj and The Band Perry, mentioned in this story they have NOTHING to do with dub step. Country and pop music being compared to dub step is stupid. It's like saying pig Latin and French are the same language. Or Fox news and NPR are the same.

Skrillex is underground... and yet I hear him, or one of his remixes, at every club I go to.
    • MrLookout  •  5 mths ago
      Never heard of him.
Never heard 99% of who was listed.
And that's why no one is buying music any more. It sucks.

Skrillex is actually really popular/well-known in the dance music community. He's not my sorta flavor, but he has a huge following. Congrats to him. BTW...you may not like dance music or consider it music...I don't like Taylor Swift's music, but acknowledge that many people do and I still think she's talented. It's all about mutual respect people.

Was this story posted on an AARP email. Everyone sounds like they're 60. Most of you haven't heard of Nicki Minaj or Skrillex? What's wrong with y'all?

Skrillex is one of the biggest names in dance music. Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful female rappers in history, she's good at different accents and alter egos. J. Cole is also a rapper signed to Jay Z's label. He's sounds kinda like Drake but more Hood. iThe Band Perry is country, sounds a lot like Taylor Swift. Bon Iver is boring as hell. Couldn't listen to his CD at all.

Skrillex would only be "underground" to people whose musical awareness never leaves AM radio. I suppose Dave Guetta is some kind of underground artist too.
