Grand Canyon banning plastic water bottles sales

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Disposable plastic water bottles soon won't be sold at the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service announced Monday that it has approved a plan to eliminate the sale of the bottles within 30 days. They make up about 20 percent of the park's waste and 30 percent of recyclables.

Visitors can fill up reusable containers at water stations, though the ban doesn't keep them from bringing disposable bottles into the park.

Park Service director Jon Jarvis had nixed a bottle ban at the Grand Canyon in late 2010. A former park superintendent had raised suspicion that the Coca-Cola Co, a major water bottle producer, unduly influenced the Park Service. But the agency and Coca-Cola denied that.

Jarvis recently released a national policy outlining how park superintendents could institute a ban.

most all of the legislation imposed on us by local, state and fed gov'ts is because people are lazy, stupid, ignorant, irresponsible or incompetent. by people, i mean: the public in general, business interests and yes, gov't officials themselves. lawmaking is essentially a compensative response to the issues, gov't is almost always behind the curve in dealing with most issues. every one of us at times in our life, wants gov't to do something about something. even the most conservative, small-gov't advocates have ideas about what the gov't should do that it isn't doing, it's all a matter of what is most important to the individual.

I find it so ironic how so many go to the effort of seeing the beauty of our parks, forests and wildernesses, then leave their garbage on the ground. I'm a strong advocate of taking out what I bring in. Keep America beautiful!

Awesome! Those infernal things are everywhere... plus bottled water is a ripoff. Selling what you can get next to free!

We were at the Grand Canyon last year and I did not see a lot of trash on the ground. It seemed like people appreciated the beauty enough that they were carrying out their trash or using receptacles for it. The bigger problem is people suffering from the heat and dehydration, which the lack of water (in plastic bottles) will only make worse. Besides, they must make a TON of money off those sales.

people suffering from heat or dehydration have themselves to blame for not having the sense to realize beforehand that they'll need water. same way as people who go in the water and don't know how to swim. these people are called tourists and they always seem to leave their common sense behind when they leave home(if they had any). thje lamentable reason we even have gov't is because sooooo many people need to be protected from themselves or each other....and all of us need to be protected from the gov't.

plastic beverage containers-and the idea that bottled water is somehow better/healthier than ordinary tap water-are two of the stupidest/most effective cons sold to american consumers.

Clean up after yourself is all you have to do. Most people think that is what someone else is getting paid to do
      • Virga Rain 3 mths ago
We have people who do that. They are called Park Rangers. What do we pay them for?
      • jrip 3 mths ago
Not to clean up after you! The Park Rangers are college educated people. Treat them with the respect they deserve.

Smart move. You should "pack out what you pack in". People can go back to filling their own water bottles or Camelback.

Why not just forget it? Stay home and watch the NFL or NBA.

Ok, tourists, just remember to buy your water bottles in Page, Flagstaff, or Williams, AZ, before you get to the park. A LOT cheaper, too.

you missed the point. get a stainless steel refillable bottle and get your water there. Be part of the solution rather than look for a way around it.

Not in Flagstaff, Arizona bottled water is expensive there!

Better yet, bring your tap water from Tijuana and drink it at the Grand Canyon, where there are no bathrooms for miles.

Is there anything more pathetic than adults walking around, sucking on their ba-ba? Try walking to the water fountain.

How many people have to be treated for dehydration there and they want to make it harder to access water? Hey folks, plastic is recyclable! I seriously don't get the rationalization here. Hope they have a contingency plan when someone sues because they couldn't buy a bottle of water and then got dehydrated and had to have medical care due to the canyon's environmental wacko rules. I've been to the GC and it's awesome but its also frigging hot and I was very glad there was water to be had....oh, and yes, I did put the used container in one of the very many recycle bins.

It never ceases to amaze me where even an articl like this about keeping one of the world's finest natural wonders clean can attract the knuckledraggers of the country to express their ignorance and contempt of these God given places.
    • Good2BAlive  •  3 mths ago
prediction on the first knucklehead that strokes out because of dehydration and then sues park services. I say day 3.

My finger hurts! Cut off your arm. Always the over legislation. Nothing reasonable like just fine the crap out of the litterers. Make them serve time by picking up trash. Wow.
