Greece, Europe struggle to contain debt crisis

BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought Tuesday to calm market fears that Greece is heading for a chaotic default as Europe struggles to contain a crippling financial crisis.

Merkel rejected the notion that a Greek bankruptcy — a possibility raised a day earlier by her deputy that spooked markets — would provide a quick solution to the eurozone debt crisis.

She argued that Europe instead needs to stick to its efforts to cut budget deficits and improve its competitiveness, and that resolving the crisis would be "a very long, step-by-step process."

Her comments came ahead of a teleconference Wednesday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou.

Fears of an imminent Greek default pushed interest rates on the country's 10-year government bonds up Tuesday to a new record of over 24 percent, although Merkel sounded optimistic regarding Greece's chances of getting the next batch of bailout cash from the so-called troika — the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Representatives from the three organizations are due back in Athens soon.

"Everything that I hear from Greece is that the Greek government has hopefully understood the signs of the time and is now doing the things that are on the daily agenda," Merkel told rbb-Inforadio. "The fact that the troika is returning means that Greece has started doing some things that need to be done."

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama urged European leaders to take a more forceful approach to the continent's debt problems, which could slow an already-faltering U.S. economy.

"They have taken some steps to slow the crisis but not solve the crisis," Obama told a group of Spanish-speaking journalists Tuesday. "We will continue to see weaknesses in the world economy so long as this issue does not get resolved."

Merkel also sought to defuse suggestions by Vice Chancellor Philipp Roesler and others that a default by Greece is a possibility.

Roesler raised on Monday the specter of an "orderly insolvency" in the future, a notion the Dutch finance minister indicated was being considered.

Jan Kees de Jager told Dutch financial news show "RTL Z" on Tuesday that his ministry was "prepared or preparing for all conceivable scenarios and even the almost inconceivable scenarios."

Asked if that included a Greek default, he said, "It includes all likely and unlikely scenarios, but I can't tell you specifically which."

Merkel dismissed the idea that the debt crisis "could evaporate with one buzzword — be it eurobonds or insolvency or other words."

"I am deeply convinced that won't happen," she told reporters after meeting Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen. The chancellor didn't mention Roesler but pointed to the potential dangers of untested action.

"We must always keep in view that we do everything we do in a controlled way, that we know the consequences, because otherwise a situation could very quickly arise in the eurozone ... that none of us wants and that could have very, very difficult consequences for us all," Merkel said.

She suggested that even an orderly default couldn't come any time soon, noting there wasn't even a mechanism in place for a eurozone nation to default. The future European Stability Mechanism — the eurozone's permanent bailout fund — will start up in 2013.

German opposition politicians have suggested Roesler's main aim was to score political points for his Free Democratic Party, the junior partner in Merkel's center-right coalition, which is struggling with dismal poll ratings.

    Roesler defended his position Tuesday.

"We want Greece to stay in the eurozone," he said. "For that, we need to restore (its) economic potential; and from my point of view, there can be no bans on thinking in this restoration."

Greece is relying on rescue loans to remain solvent. But lagging efforts to tame a bloated budget deficit and enforce reforms are threatening that lifeline, which is conditional on fiscal progress.

Athens is trying to convince international creditors that it deserves to get the next, sixth tranche of money due from a bailout fund. Government spokesman Elias Mossialos said late Monday that Greece will get the bailout money.

Despite over 20 months of austerity and two international bailouts each worth about €110 billion ($150 billion), Greece's finances remain in a parlous state.

Over the past few days, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos has issued a series of pledges to accelerate delayed reforms meant to cut the cost and size of the public sector, and raised the prospect of firing up to 20,000 public servants — which would break a major taboo in a country where state employees have guaranteed jobs for life.

In a last desperate bid to plug the revenue hole, the government on Sunday imposed a new, two-year blanket tax on property.

The planned second Greek bailout has faced delays in implementation — not least because of Finland's demand for collateral for its contribution, which annoyed other Europeans.

Merkel said she was "very optimistic" of resolving that.

"I think we want to, and will, find a way that is in principle open to all partners and still fulfills Finland's requirements," she said.

Germany's people are tired of bailing out the EU.German voters rejecting Merkel's lies.
Cannot wait for the euros demise. National currencies will return and a great deal of malinvestment will come to an end. It is the best thing for Europe and the world. The mistake of the euro will be over and sovereign nations can return to reality, not some one-world driven philosophy.

The only thing the E.U has been good at is eliminating travel restrictions within E.U countries. Everything else sucks.

Bravo DooDahMan. Greece should have never been admitted to the Euro Zone, but somebody made some money off it and it aint the German or the Greek workers. One should remember " Beware of Greek bearing presents"

Greece would like nothing better than the eternal Euro Bail Out. Stop that nonsense. go back to you drachme.

At this point the leaders of Europe should just give Greece the nod to default and, if necessary, exit the Eurozone. They are by no means appealing options, but at this point they are truly the only option left. The Greek's just plain can't pay back the loans they were granted; they could raise their taxes 200% and eliminate all government spending on everything from roads to paper clips, and they still would not be able to pay it all back. A default will be painful and could lead to further disruption in the Eurozone. But at this point, it is probably best to just yank the bandage off and be done with it rather than slowly peeling it away and feeling the agony the whole time.

Don't invest in Greece. Greek politicians are all corrupt. Don't invest in Greece

Just like in the USA, in Greece the rich people pay nearly no taxes. They rather bribe the politicians by financing their campaigns (which is actually the politics of the teabags).
Americans should learn from Greece what will happen to the USA if they follow the teabags .
Already now in the USA rich people pay the lowest taxes and the public debt are the highest of all industrial countries.

      Greece is the Word

We take the bailout and we throw away
      Conventionalitly belongs to yesterday
There is no chance that we can make it far
We start believing now but we can be who we are

      Greece is the word
It’s got debt through the ceiling
Greece is the time, is the place is the motion
Greece is the way we are feeling

As time progresses forward and more is illuminated the ultimate solution to the current economic crisis will become more evident. There will come forward a "savior" with the most simplistic and profound solution to the crisis. That solution was prophesized in a book called the BIBLE and will entail the use of a global currency, in which not one person will be able to sell or buy without its use. This path is clear since America is following the same exact course as Greece. Now why would that possibly be unless events were designed to unfold in such a manner?

The bible was a political instrument as well as a record of human behaviour, some unsavory behaviour at that. Afghanistan and Iraq are not sending any form of tribute to the US or her allies. It is actually the US, Europeans and Australians who are spending a collective fortune on the war while spending funds on social projects and job creation as well, in an attempt to buy hearts and minds. You could say that we are transferring our wealth to their temple, which is never a very good sign when you are fighting a war against someone. Afghanistan has an army, we are not building one there, we have been fighting it for a decade and the heavier our presence there, the greater the prestige and mystique of those who fight to the death against the great military and economic collossus of the US and her European allies. bin Laden was a business man, he had a better understanding of our economy than our leading politicians. In the same manner that a traveler returns to his home country and catches sight of things that anyone living there all their lives will have missed, bin Laden conducted business in many countries and he could see precisely what was wrong with the US economy and he could predict exactly how we'd react, including with reference to building up a massive deficit that would either break the banking system or the backs of governments, particularly our own.

Cheryl you are a bible thumping m*&^%. Currencies don't matter that much. Fiscal policies do.And currency is only a part of that.
Use your head instead of looking for "prophecies" that never come true.

Technically, Grease is a PREDATORY state. It is debt just for wasting and stealing, not for investments! The Greek State should simply be dissolved, ALL the public "workers" fired, and Greece occupied from Germany & Co. Greek debt = public failure debt. So let Greece burn. Let its government face the music. Put the fear into the others that will help them sort themselves out and let the morons on the streets of Athens see what happens when you try to borrow more than people are prepared to lend.

A barrel of oil now sells for $100 dollars and heavily pollutes the earth. A barrel of wild salmon sells for $5,500 dollars a barrel and greatly benefits our coastal waters. rivers and the living things within those waters......which is more important to the U.S. economy?. The U.S. and Europe once had the most abundant river/ocean fisheries on earth, which would now be worth well over $1 trillion dollars per year if still in existence. Widespread dam building here, and in Europe, has destroyed most U.S. and European salmon runs because they block the salmon and other fish from swimming up the world's rives from oceans, to spawn/lay eggs. Now many river and ocean gamefish species are depleted by up to 90%. Many have been driven to extinction. If we continue to exploit the earth's natural resources at a rate which is faster than the earth's ability to recover, we will remain in economic turmoil, poverty and debt. All wealth comes from the land, oceans, rivers, forests, animals, plants etc., if these ecosystems are not respected and kept healthy we will be plunged into worldwide poverty, warfare, social breakdown etc. The driving force behind this destruction is over-consumption, greed, mismanagement. The driving force behind religious extremism is poverty and environmental destruction, which leads to tyranny and injustice.....with ethnicity, nationality and religion as the EXCUSE to steal resources from others.

The reason why socialism always fails is because none of them ever did it properly ! Right now capitalism is failing, and don't try and tell me that its successful ! A country run by a Republican government which created vast debts and believes its a capitalist government and America ended up with a debt of about 10 trillion dollars.! And that is success ! The problem with both socialism and capitalism is that those at the top get greedy, they pretend they know what they're doing when they don't, then they don't tell the truth, they produce fictitious figures for everything. The world can't work properly on lies, a company can't work properly on lies. A company has to trust its staff, the staff have to trust the boss, he has to keep the books straight, they have to work properly in the hours they're paid. They all should pay their proper taxes, not just extra tax on the workers, and reductions for the boss. Its called honesty. Socialism survives on lies and coercion and restrictions, and capitalism survives on the rich helping the rich, and kicking the workers ass when he needs more money to live. You know what they say, you don't like the salary,? There's the door !

TANK THE BANKS. Nothing very devastating will happen. The government shell just keeps all the branches open, performs all normal banking functions, prints money where necessary, and uses the opportunity to switch from debt money to equity money ("preferred stock" in national assets). And don't extend any more loans.
